  1. Have I mentioned that you folks are just wonderful?

I had a wonderful birthday, the highlight of which was my beloved and way too infrequently seen sister coming to visit, and which was topped off with a massive present-opening session. It turns out people make a big fuss over age 50, who knew? It was just like Christmas, only you don't have to wait politely to watch others open theirs. Wheee!!

Marty, my dear, I'll see you tomorrow night. Patti has the details of where we're going for dinner, in case you want to make a surprise appearance.

And for all my other darling friends, I'll wish massively that I was seeing you tomorrow night too. Love love.

  2. By the way, reason #1,539 that I love the Pabst - they had a special early presale for people who had bought tickets to the canceled Long & Short of it tour. I scored a front row ticket.

Wow, what excellent behavior on the part of a venue! I'm impressed.

I've enjoyed both Colin solo shows I've seen. I got no prickish vibes.

    Me too, and me either.

  3. Feel free to take a break at the hour point and let the audience talk among ourselves for 15 minutes

It's great in theory, but at shows where folks have done this, it dissipates the energy that's built up through the show. Even knowing that the encores are "fake", there's kind of an arc of excitement that builds with the applause when the band is off the stage.

So, what would happen if, after the show but before the encore, everyone claps politely and leaves. Would there still be a fake encore?

Many years ago, Autumn Defense played Iota here near DC. Iota is a tiny place with an often unnaturally polite crowd. The setup of the place makes leaving and returning to the stage pretty awkward, so a lot of performers just say they'll keep playing rather than doing an encore. Apparently no one mentioned this to Pat and John, because after their set, they left the stage to enthusiastic but short-lived applause. I tried to keep it going because I knew they did their Big Star cover for the encore, but it was no use, the applause died to nothing. And Pat and John ran back and John said, "You want to hear another song, don't you?" and everyone clapped and they did the Big Star cover.

So, I'd say the answer your question can be yes.

  4. 9th and Irving

There's nothing really all that spectacular about this completely untouristed neighborhood, except that it simply shows what makes all San Francisco neighborhoods so spectacular:...

That's the neighborhood my sister lived in when she was there, and I loved it. San Francisco is a very comfy city for me.

DC is absolutely without question the best city I've ever lived in -- and yes, I do live IN the District. It's a very neighborhood-y town, and I felt at home here the minute I arrived, 23 years ago.

No one is more surprised than I am to discover how much I love LA. And it's not just my Jon Brion/Largo obsession, either. It can really be a great town, for music and food and groovy neighborhoods. It's just too danged bad about the smog, though. Bleh.

  5. Sorry for resurrecting a long-dead thread, but I saw them last night at the Black Cat. I was going to put something in After the Show, but I realized that I didn't have anything more interesting to say than "WOW." I was smitten from the very first riff. It's very audience interactive (lots of dragging people on the stage to dance, some of whom were freakin' great dancers), and a wonderfully entertaining show.

And as noted in this thread already, the music is just amazing -- Al Green and James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone all rolled together, only more modern plus she's a girl. :)

If they come to your part of the world, you shouldn't miss them: http://www.daptonerecords.com/shows-sjdk.html

  6. EDIT: We now only need one, so if you have a Wednesday to trade for a Tuesday, send me a PM!

I don't know which sub-forum this belongs in, since we both have extras and need tickets, so I'll just put in both. If that's bad, dear mods, let me know.

My friend needs a Wednesday 2/27 930 Club ticket, and I have an extra Tuesday 2/26 930 Club ticket. If anyone would like to trade, gimme a PM.

I have another friend with two extra Tuesday tickets, and he wants at least one Wednesday, so the trade could be for anything up to three tickets.

    Thanks for any help.

  8. I was so shocked yesterday when I read this that I couldn't think of a thing to say, and I'm still reeling. I only ever talked to Nat on the phone, I never got to meet her in person. Though given her straightforwardness, meeting her here definitely counts as knowing her.

Bbop mentioned to me back channel how this is a reminder to carpe diem, and he's right. The diem is all we've got, I know Natalie seized hers, and I'm going to try to follow her lead.

  9. And we fuckers did sing.

Wow, thank you so much. Jon Brion freakin' rules the universe. Not to put too fine a fangirl point on it or anything. But wow.

(I'd completely forgotten that he did the backup vocals for the Cheers song, and wouldn't it have been grand if the youtube poster had gotten the Sugar Plum Fairies segment of that medley, too?)

  10. I back her up 1 million percent on this.

And I back his back up one jillion percent further.

But I'm glad the awesomeness is coming through on the video, too, though!

were you holding your beer steins aloft and swaying with the song? i hope so.

Sub in "goofy little plastic glasses of champagne", add in a number of questioning looks at each other regarding the lyrics, and you're on.
