lamradio
STOP THE PRESSES!!! Heading to New Orleans for the first time and I cannot wait!!! New Orleans is a fine city indeed.. If you like seafood and oysters, you HAVE TO go to the Acme Oyster house.. The oysters are gigantic.. But if seafood isn't your bag, then there's plenty of other great restaurants of course.. So many great places to eat in NO, but Acme is indeed one of the best if you like oysters. I also recommend getting bread pudding for dessert at almost any NO restaurant. I don't know what it is about that town, but almost every place features bread pudding dripping in rum (or whiskey) for dessert, and they do it well. Man, I really need to get back down there sometime soon.
owl
Stay in the French Quarter...in general.
a_quiet_domino
Don't wear your nice shoes when you go out in New Orleans. The place is underwater, and you don't want to know what gets spilled/discharged onto the floors of the bars in that town.

Drinky Crow
Have you ever seen Kermit Ruffins?? I want to catch something like that while im down there. Excellent choice. He used to play every Thursday at Vaughn's in Bywater which is a great little spot. I haven't been to NOLA in a few years years, but I'm assuming he still has that standing gig. So stay an extra day following the shows - it's well worth it.

Sweet Delightful
http://www.wwoz.org/community/musiccalendar/ That site lists everything going on in NoLa. Kermitt Ruffians is playing somewhere on Thrusday. I second going down to Frenchman St. There is always someone good playing there and the street crowd is mad fun. And yeah, Soul Rebels = Amazing. Catch them if you can!!! It'll change your life.
Rag319
Live in Uptown NOLA, not far from Tips. Be there both nights. Also, if anyone gets into town on Monday (3/3) night...go to the BANKS STREET BAR at 4401 Banks St in Mid city for a really good rock show.
bibliophile
As a New Orleanian, we're always excited to have guests, so welcome. If you'd like to get some dinner before one of the shows, you should think about going to Dick and Jenny's, which is just a block down Tchoupitoulas. Here is their website where you can check out the menu. It's one of my favorite restaurants. They do not take reservations, so if you go, go early! Have fun while you're here! Edit: P.S. Kermit Ruffins at Vaughn's is a great show, and you should definitely check it out if you can, but it is in an area not frequented by tourists. I would suggest taking a cab there and going in a group if you can.

Rag319
Two cool bars close to Tips that should be fun for some pre-show drinkin'. First if Miss Mae's which is open 24 hours a day, on the corner of Napoleon and Magazine. The other is 45 Tchoup...never actually been here, but I hear it's cool. Down the street from Tips on Tchoupitoulas. Word.
