Parlez vous Francais?

Recommended Posts

So I'm going to Bordeaux, France at the end of March for a week to be with my girlfriend who is studying there. Has anyone been there and can recommend some interesting things to do/see? I'm sure she'll know of a bunch of stuff, but I was wondering if anyone on here has any input. My french is pretty limited - I'm taking my second quarter of French in college and I'll be done with it by the time I leave, but I'll by no means by close to fluent. Any tips with customs? Anywho, I've never been to France before (only to England a couple of years ago to see family), so anything I should know would be great. Thanks!

When I went to France a couple of years ago (2006) customs was easier there than it was returning to America. I have never been to Bordeaux, but there soccer team is second in the table, and are making the first challenge to Lyon in 7 years with young midfielder Gourcuff ;leading the way I would recommend trying to squeeze a game in.

I've been to France, although not Bordeaux, a bunch of times. You will have enough French with 2 semesters to get by just fine. Just be friendly and polite, start out conversations in French, sprinkle in as many Madam/Monsieurs as you can. Greet every store owner when you walk in, and say au revoir when you leave. Eat and drink everything put in front of you, ask questions later. Do a little research on Bordeaux wines before you go. By law, each winery can only produce a certain amount of their best vintage wine a year. But, there is often extra and it is bottled under a second label, often MUCH less expensive, but excellent quality. I could tell you some from the Burgundy region, but not Bordeaux. Buy yourself a Marling Menu Master and carry it with you. Enjoy!

Ah great thanks for the tips! I'm really excited...March can't get here soon enough. Apparently my girlfriend lives in the heart of the museum/artistic area of the city, so I imagine we'll take full advantage of that.
