cwnorman
I just moved from Denver CO to Boston, MA, actually Kendall Sq in Cambridge. I would gladly take any and all recommendations of things to do and places to see, but I am specifically looking for some VC knowledge concerning local record stores and maybe and possibly a local audio visual store. I only lived in Denver for 2.5 years but became really attached to Twist and Shout and Listen Up. Looking for a record store that will get most of the new vinyl releases that come out. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
MWB
Newbury Comics. I've only been to Boston once in my life, but even then, I know about Newbury Comics.
jmacomber68w
Newbury Comics. I've only been to Boston once in my life, but even then, I know about Newbury Comics. lol Newbury comics is mecca! I'm from Rhode Island, but between Redsox games and concerts I am in Boston about 5+ times a year. I know the Havard Square area is an amazing part of the city. The Boston Commons and the surrounding area is full of nice stops. Right off of the commons is the Orpheum which is a fun venue to see a show. My sense of the city is a bit like a puzzle, but I do know the general area of Landsdown street and Newbury Street have plenty of things to check out. Someone who actually lives there should be able to give you more tips than me, but hey I'm a start.
So Long
Newbury Comics is the best. Looney Tunes just past the corner of Boylston St. and Mass Ave is good too.

I could be thinking of another record store. Are Looney Tunes the small (and i stress small lol) preowned specialty store? I remember a purple, bluish type logo, could be thinking of something else
So Long
I think that's CD Spins. They closed, as far as I know Looney Tunes is only one store, and it's open.

Now that I think of it, that record store that I vaguely referred to is looney tunes! I walked by it late one night, and it was still open, the employees were blasting music onto the street it seemed to be a pretty hopping place.
Sir Stewart
Looney Tunes had two locations - the one on Mass Ave in Cambridge (between Harvard and Central Squares) recently closed shop. The one in Boston is still open. And that's about it these days for used records in Boston. Kinda crazy. Used to be you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a used record shop in Boston.Newbury Comics is definitely the place to go for new vinyl. There's also a great shop called Twisted Village in Harvard Square where you'll find weird stuff you didn't know you wanted. Check out their catalog, it's pretty impressive. cwnorman
Thanks Everyone, really appreciate that. Got online last night and located Newbury comics. Looks great. I'm in Kendall Sq so it looks like the North Boston or Harvard square locations will be the closest. Thanks for the info on the orpheum to! W
Sir Stewart
I forgot about Cheapo Records! They're closest to you, and they're great for inexpensive used vinyl.
rac1234
In Your Ear on Mount Auburn St. in Harvard Square is great, too!
lamradio
I miss Boston.. I used to pass Newbury Comics every day on my way to/from school. It was a little farther walk for me to use Newberry Street, but there was always something interesting to see.
Oil Can Boyd
In Your Ear on Mount Auburn St. in Harvard Square is great, too!I can see In Your Ear from my (office) window. If you are in Harvard Square, there is also Planet Records, which is pretty good. And if you are looking for really weird stuff there is the appropriately named weirdo records in Central. Sir Stewart
Man, my post about records stores disappearing was grossly misinformed. Oil Can - you a Lampooner?
Oil Can Boyd
Man, my post about records stores disappearing was grossly misinformed. Oil Can - you a Lampooner? I wish. Nope, I work for The Man (in Holyoke Center). But you are right in that many of the great ones have disappeared. I spent a lot of time in places like Second Coming, Disc Diggers, Mystery Train. I'm sure there are plenty of others that I am forgetting.
Sir Stewart
Yeah, those are the ones I was thinking of - and when the Cambridge Looney Tunes closed up last month, it felt like the end of an era (I always liked that location more than the Boston one). Even the hip-hop record store that took over Second Coming's place is gone. I think it's a gourmet chocolate store now?

I liked the Cambridge Looney Tunes because Peter Prescott (from Mission of Burma/Volcano Suns) worked there.
Sir Stewart
Oh wow just googled him - totally. I never knew that's who he is.
lamradio
I also used to go to Tower Records a lot because it was right down the street from my apartment (the one near Fenway).. But it of course went belly up.. And that doesn't help you, but I was just reminiscing..

Are you talking about the one on the corner of.... I think it was Newbury and Massachusetts Avenue? If so, man that's a pretty small building to have a Best Buy in.
