Wild Frank
I might be in a very very small minority, and I have no idea whether they ever made an impact in the States, but I have always followed Marillion. Back in the early eighties, thought the commercial peak of 'Misplaced Childhood' and right up to the present day. Recent albums like 'Brave' and 'Marbles' are great. Anyway, they have a new record out this month, an acoustic re-working of the some of their material and it is a really beautiful piece of work. So if you used to follow them but lost track I would recommend giving them another go. Their still a bit proggy but in a less Genesisish way. More reminisant of Radiohead I suppose. It would also nice to have some re-assurance that their are some other sad proggies out there!!
bjorn_skurj
I liked Marillion a bit about 20-plus years ago. Saw them a couple times in Poughkeepsie.
Wild Frank
Judging by the response first time round I'm assuming there is not much love for Marillion in here. However they have a great new album out 'Sounds that can't be made'. The first song of the record is a 18 minute opus called 'Gaza' which is very powerful and wonderful. Those prog-minded can have a listen via their website below. Trust me it will be worth your while (if you like 18 minute multi-sectioned politically charge prog epics). http://www.marillion.com/news/newsitem.htm?id=
PopTodd
I remember reading about them in the Guitar geek rags that I used to subscribe to when I was a young, aspiring guitar player.Weren't they sort of a poor-man's Rush? Not a knock on them because, for that type of thing, Rush are really in a league of their own.

Afraid of Sunlight is probably my favourite Hogarth era album. I agree with the Radiohead comment but unfortunatly Marillion still have a serious image problem which restricts them somewhat. In terms of Fish-Era Clutching at Straws is a classic.
Vacant Horizon
yeah, clutching is on my list. i've heard it before. seamless album. glad to hear about afraid of sunlight. will put that at the top of the list too. it is too bad about the prog stigma. they really are more than that. same could be said for steven wilson and porcupine tree. it's just good modern rock that hipsters and dad rockers would like. i guess marillion doesn't play the states much these days. their last tour here was fan funded i think. They played a couple of shows in NYC which you can download from their website for a small cost.
