MKHstudios
Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express treated a packed Cafe Nine to a most raucous rock show this past Wednesday night. A high energy performance from start to finish - wow. I think Chuck and his band were extra amped after a 50min high energy opening set by Paul Collins' Beat during which Chuck sat in for the last number. Collins, a legend in his own right, is best known for songs "I Don't Fit In" and "Rock-N-Roll Girl". Chuck's new material sounded great live and blended into his dynamic live show seamlessly. bböp
Very cool that Chuck drew a good-sized crowd! It's always kind of mind-boggling to me that guys like him and Steve Wynn—and countless others I can't think of right now—aren't better known and don't get more publicity and/or better bookings. Not saying anything about Cafe Nine, which I haven't been to, but whenever Chuck is in the Chicago area, for instance, it seems like he always plays FitzGerald's or SPACE, which technically aren't even in the city. Why isn't he playing at Schuba's or Lincoln Hall or Old Town or Park West, I wonder? Maybe it's his choice, I don't know, but it seems to me a recurring pattern with some of these older "roots" artists who have been around a while (you know, basically a lot of the American artists who are bigger in Europe than in their own country.) At any rate, thanks for posting a setlist. Must have been a pretty rockin' night with Paul Collins Beat also on the bill. I haven't had a chance to pick up Chuck's new record (Temple Beautiful) yet, but I'm looking forward to hearing it. I'm also still working on tracking down a copy of No Other Love on vinyl — that's a toughie. Also cool that he's throwing a couple of covers into his set. He usually does, doesn't he? Personally, I'd love to hear him do Shake Some Action. Looks like Chuck and the Mission Express have quite a busy summer lined up. I definitely encourage folks to go check them out if they're coming anywhere near you (and they probably are)...
bböp
Interesting article by Mr. Prophet in the Independent (UK), naming the members of his "fantasy band." His comment on Jerry Garcia is pretty funny... http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/my-fantasy-band-chuck-prophet-7545926.html
