wilco den haag
dear Mr. Tweedy, how great when I heared you would visit The Hague for a concert, near my hometown, as part of the Crossing Border festival. A festival of literature and music: crossing borders! Bought a 60 euro ticket, a passpartout for the whole weekend, but mainly to see you. Just want to say thank you so much for your great concert and your sweet great words afterwards about the fantastic audience!! Its so much worth it, paying this amount of money and making free time, hearIng you say we are serious fuckers.... People who come to a beautiful festival about literature and music and take their time to listen to you. Thank you so much, and take care with your enormous ego.... Marijn
As a fellow Dutchman, I can assure you that people writing about 'Dutchie-gate' at the Leuven gig are clearly missing the point. After a couple of songs, Tweedy told the audience that they were having more fun than the audience the night before. At that point, I shouted "but they were Dutch!", which transformed into a running gag, especially when some other Dutchies at the front shouted *they* surely were having fun. At one point during the show, Jeff jokingly assured everyone that he wasn't in a position to dislike the Dutch, the French or any other population, "because I'm American". Over the past 12 years, I have visited nearly 20 Wilco/Tweedy shows across Europe (but mainly in NL), and I agree that Jeff can be a bit grumpy at times. Even after the Leuven show, my friend and fellow VC'er Dunja told me that this was a completely different Jeff Tweedy than two days before in Cologne, where he made a guy leave the show for taking some pictures. Maybe this resulted in Tweedy being a bit cranky in Den Haag. (Also, I visited Crossing Borders a couple of years ago, where most of the "non-mainstream" gigs were packed with cultural snobbish pipe smoking 'Volkskrant' readers). But the atmosphere in Leuven was so joyful, and Tweedy was just joking around the whole time. Finally, I *honestly* couldn't be bothered with an artist criticizing the audience, as long as he performs well. According to Dutch reviews, he did. Case closed.
