  1. I'm a little late to the discussion but I wanted to chime in with my favorite comic book movies. I loved X-men 2 and Spiderman 2 just because beyond special effects and villains and all those other things they captured the essence of what those characters are about. The train sequence in Spiderman 2 reminded me of that early issue in the Ditko run where Spiderman has to lift that large piece of machinery. Also cool was how the train passengers stuck up for Spidey, showcasing that sense of his closeness to New York that's an important part of the comic. With X-men 2 I was sold after that great Nightcrawler sequence in the opening. It vividly brought to life just how it looked and you imagined it sounded in the comics. Plus, Wolverine going berserk against the soldiers was another cool touch.

And if you want to talk about faithfulness to the source material, you can't do better than Frank Miller's Sin City.

  2. So it turns out that even though the show was listed as 7:30 that was when doors opened. The show was supposed to start at 9 but Ryan and the band didn't come out until 9:30 p.m. They proceeded to play for more than two hours, including a three-song encore that ended with a killer extended version of "Magnolia Mountain." I'd seen him three times before and I'd say this is the most focused and consistenly engaging one I've been to. I liked the semi-acoustic format and thought the Cardinals sounded awesome. They seem to have really energized Ryan who seemed to be having a good time and was joking throughout much of the show. The set consisted mostly of recent stuff with a few older ones and some I didn't recognize (I presume from his unreleased albums because I have all his official releases). One surprise was a retooled version of "This is It" from Rock'n'Roll. Despite the jack-o-lantern decorating the piano no "Hallween Head" or "La Cienaga Smile," which a few people called out for. (The theatre is half a block from La Cienega.) All in all a good show.

  3. Both shows I've seen (Detroit at the Gem, and Louisville at the Brown) - no opener. Show started pretty close to on time, 10-15 minutes late maybe, so do what you can to get there ASAP.

Hey, scribex6 - we'll be lookin for a report! :) Have a good one! Here's to a nice long encore :cheers

Thanks for the info! I guess I'll have to scramble to get there on time after work. I'll let yu guys know how the show goes.

  4. Does anyone know if there's an opening act for this tour? I'm going to see him tomorrow night and wanted to figure out how early I have to get there. The show is listed at 7:30 p.m. and I may not be able to get there that early.

  5. JCN was my favourite of the recent triptych. But come on, nine albums in seven years. Ryan, take some time off...go to the beach. Give us a chance to live with the albums before you hit us with another truckload of music.

Y'know, I know a lot of people like to complain about him being so prolific but I don't see why people get annoyed by it. It's not like you have to buy the new album when it comes out. If you want to wait a couple years before buying it, you can do that. The album will still be available in the stores. Those of us who do want to hear new stuff dont' have to wait as long. Everyone wins.
