  1. We had a great time at Euclid in St. Louis! I bought the new Breeders single on vinyl. CDs purchased were "Velocity of Sound" by Apples in Stereo, "Draw Breath" by The Nels Cline Singers, and "Zoysia" by the Bottle Rockets, which I somehow neglected to get when it was released two years ago.

Speaking of which, their in-store performance was a lot of fun. I was amazed by how much of th audience consisted of other parents who, like me, were bringing their kids out for their first live music experiences. I talked to Brian Henneman, the lead singer, before their performance about the proliferation of second-generation Bottle Rockets fans. They took a lot of requests from the little ones, who made quite a pit in front of the stage.

He poked some fun at Jeff Tweedy before playing "I'll Be Coming Around". There's a little two-note riff in the song that Jeff added/suggested while they were recording. As Brian put it, "This was when he was Jeff Tweedy, not JEFF TWEEDY. I can't afford to pay him for two-note riffs anymore."

Evidence that the band and its followers have caused themselves much brain damage over the years: he forgot the second verse of "Thousand Dollar Car" and no one in the crowd could remember it. I'd just listened to the song on the way to the store and couldn't conjure it up. Someone finally looked it up online.

It was really great to see such an awesome record store jam-packed with people who love music. I think this might be my new favorite holiday. And I haven't even gone through my big bag of freebies!

The B-Rox were a great way to wake up on a Saturday morning! I'm sorry I didn't see your earlier post until tonight. I was standing about 5 yards in front of the stage by the mic stand. The number of toddlers there was crazy but cool! The sound was really good and the tape sounds great! I'm still looking for the tape from their Thanksgiving weekend show at Off Broadway, it's around here somewhere. I just remembered that I caught them opening for Lucinda a few years ago...I need to look for that too! Unfortunately I won't be able to make their Anniversary show at Blueberry Hill in two weeks, though I have a good excuse since I'll still be in New Orleans during the second weekend of Jazz Fest. Would you like a copy of the show?

Greg Valentine can be seen here, between Harley Race and J.J.

I'll have to watch that on youtube. I saw Flair fight Race for the title back in 82 or 83 at Kiel Auditorium...one of those 2 out of 3 falls. It was cool how the bad guy would always win the first fall and almost the second before the good guy would take it, and then back and forth chaos for the next 20 mins.

  3. That's not really all that impressive. Thats like 1 great pitcher who hasn't seen a mount in over a year, one probably good pitcher, and a whole lot of not too much.

I have to disagree. If Carp comes back this summer healthy and ready to go, he's one of the top 2-3 in the NL. Wainwright has developed into one of the better pitchers in the NL. He had a 2.xx era last year after the all-star game, throwing QS after QS...with any run support he would have won 18+ last year. Mulder is a question mark but he says he feels better than he has in 3-4 years. He now has the full range of his shoulder, so we'll see where that takes him. Clement is building stamina and should start a game next week. He'll benefit from returning to the NL. Lohse averages 30 starts/200 innings which will help the bullpen.

We're basically exchanging Lohse for Wells/Maroth...that's a good plus 6 right there. We have Looper, Thompson, Reyes and some rookies to help out in April. If all return as hoped, there aren't many rotations better in the NL.

  4. The Cardinals signed Lohse for 1 year/$4.25 million

This was something we had to do, with only Wainwright and Looper locked into the rotation to start the season.

If the rehabbing guys continue to improve ahead of schedule, our July rotation may look like this...

    Carpenter

    Wainwright

    Mulder

    Clement

    Lohse

Of course it would take some luck for all to heal with no setbacks, but that's an impressive starting 5!

  5. Well, I guess its a little disappointing to see the mighty mighty BJs throw in the towel on the season with the trades. Probably a good long-term move, but kind of robs this success-starved city of the excitement of having an outside shot at the playoffs for the first time ever. Oh well, it was a nice first half of the season, at least. Another step in the right direction.

Although, admittedly, it takes the shine off the tickets I have for a mid-March game during which I was holding out hope for a playoff-like atmosphere. Now I expect the team to be in a deep coma by then. (if they aren't already, judging by the lack of fight late in the game the other night)

I'm a Blues fan but I have a good friend who has a one of those BJ's partial season tix plans. It's too bad you guys didn't have a goalie (besides LeClaire or Mason) to trade to TB. If you pull off that trade for Richards it would have been a different story. It seems to me that Foote threw in the towel on your team. My friend said that Foote had a private jet waiting all day to take him out of town. Will Colorado visit Columbus before the season ends? I would drive 6 hours and pay scalper prices to see that! The Federov trade made a lot of sense since there was really no reason to try and resign him. I think we're only a point or so behind you but the Blues go on the road for 3 weeks and I think most of your games are at home. That mid-March game could be huge!

  6. Cards consider inviting Gonzalez to their camp

    By Derrick Goold

    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

    01/17/2008

Two-time MVP Juan Gonzalez is seeking another swing at a comeback after nearly three years since his last at-bat, and the Cardinals have discussed extending him an invitation to spring training.

Gonzalez, 38, has been working out at Eduardo Perez's Winter Training Program in Puerto Rico. The Cardinals, intrigued by descriptions of Gonzalez's workouts, are exploring the possibility of signing the former All-Star outfielder, but a source cautioned that no deal is completed.

"He really never stopped playing," said Perez, a former Cardinal and founder of a winter program that offers professional players training facilities in exchange for community work. "He looks great, like he hasn't missed a beat. His legs look strong. Once a hitter, always a hitter."

Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols and coach Jose Oquendo were visiting Perez's program this past week, to work with the players. Early Wednesday morning, Pujols and catcher Yadier Molina took batting practice with Gonzalez, Perez said.

An MVP in 1996 and 1998 with Texas, Gonzalez has 434 career home runs but only one big-league at-bat since May 2004. He tore a hamstring in his only 2005 at-bat and has not played in the majors since.

Recently, his name appeared in the Mitchell Report, which detailed a 2001 incident when steroids were discovered in a bag searched at Toronto's airport. The bag was linked to Gonzalez, though the report says a member of his entourage claimed ownership. In his book "Juiced," Jose Canseco wrote that he introduced Gonzalez to performance-enhancing drugs when they were teammates.

Wow! A pitcher with a .500+ record and a 4.50 era as a starter scores $11 million a year. Where do we go from here? Maybe Santana is a bargain if you can lock him in at $20 million. I didn't see the particulars, but I imagine even Kip Wells got a raise this year when he signed with Colorado!

  8. The truth of the matter is that we are very lucky to still be able to see them in such an intimate venue. By all accounts, Wilco could be playing local shows at United, Rosemont or Sears. Would you prefer that? Sure, there's a problem with ticket sales and TM and brokers. Maybe they could set up a system where half the tickets are mail order through WW (which the brokers may not bother with), and the other half through will call, where to pick up your tickets you must enter the show. It was a clusterfuck for sure, but if you have any extras, and this goes for all shows, please do not sell them to the scalpers who greet you when you get out of your car! They not only want to rip you off but the fan a few feet away who'll pay their price.

I prefer a GA show to reserved everytime. I've been taping shows for 25 years so you know I respect the people around me. I have to! I try to be invisible. Like Jeff said at the Crystal Ballroom, don't set yourself above the collective experience! If someone takes a break for beer/bathroom, let them back in. If the person in front of you is not abusing the unspoken space rules, then don't push them. Wilco fans, and music fans in general, are generally kind to each other. I can't help but also say that if you want to talk, and there wasn't enough time to do so while waiting in line, and then inside before the show, to please respect those around you who want to listen to the show and not you! I know I'm preaching to the choir!

  9. Actually I got a little confused. Was thinking of Rolen. Oops.

There was some tension between Edmonds and TLR, but not anywhere near Rolen's level. Jimmy has battled injury after injury since 2004. He was never healthy at any point last season. Tony put an awful amount of pressure on the MV3 to play at their career averages, often saying that they have to carry the team.

Edmonds really stepped up in 2006 as the vocal leader of the team, handing out game balls to that game's hero. I've been a baseball fan since the mid 70s and honestly he is the best centerfielder I've seen. While Jones was winning all those gold gloves, Jimmy was making plays that Jones wouldn't have attempted. His 12th inning walk off homer against the Astros in NLCS 06 was one of the greatest moments I've experienced at the stadium.

Earlier this week, owner DeWitt claimed that for the Cardinals to compete next season, we need a healthy Edmonds and Rolen to remain on the team. Unless they pump that money saved back into the payroll, it will go down as one of the worst trades in team history. I think most fans wanted to see Jimmy retire as a Cardinal.
