  1. Okay. Crank up a Jim O'Rourke song in her honor.

I was wondering if there is any way to get an actual print copy of this thing? I don't do ebooks but would still like to read it. There must be some sort of cost recovery way to do this.

Someone ought to make sure O'Rourke gets a copy.

I too would prefer a print copy, but will read it e if that's the only format.

  2. I've just finished Madame Bovary while staying on a farm and it felt like the perfect place to be reading a novel like this. What a stunning book. So beautifully written. I kept writing down lines which I loved and there were times where I was doing more scribbling than reading. As Leon says so succinctly while talking to Emma:

"Have you ever had the experience, while reading a book, of coming upon some idea you have thought of vaguely yourself, some dim picture that returns to you from afar, and seems completely to express your subtlest feeling?"

This book was that to me.

On another note, for a bit of fun and research I decided to borrow this from the library:

Never again! Too many reviews give away crucial information about plots and even endings! I thought Madame Bovary was going to be spolied for me after reading its entry in here when I was only half way through the book. But such was the power of Flaubert's writing that, even though I knew what ultimately happened in the book, it felt no less powerful to me when I reached the end.

19th century novels are the best! Madame Bovary is a great read--insightful and tragic. Tess is excellent too.

I too thought about checking out that 1,001 books book, but it's too bad it gives away so much plot detail. Maybe I can use it for a quick glance at books I won't find time to read.

  3. Love that owl iphone case!

That article was posted in another forum here not long ago (can't recall which one), and I found it interesting. Apparently Wilco's style isn't easy to pinpoint, but typical characteristics of the fanbase are.

Alas, I own few pieces of Wilco merchandise. My family and friends just don't get it (we've all been there), so I've just learned to keep it happily to myself rather than endure the awkward silence and vibes aimed at me at mention of the band. :lol I don't even own a Wilco shirt (what kind of fan am i?)

If Wilco does the coffee thing again this fall, I'm in. Last year I wasn't paying full attention and missed the order date. This year, though, I'll be on it.

I do have a few posters, two from 2003 and this one, which is my favorite. All are rolled up in a poster tube. I almost put this one up in our office room at home, since the yellows would blend nicely with the wall color we have there, but decided not to in order to head off the reaction from my husband (in all fairness, I'd have the same reaction to an Alice Cooper poster or the like if he were to put one up). It might go up in my office at work--we'll see.

  4. Here are two collages from the past couple of years with Wilco-related titles. The titles came about some time later, when I realized they were somewhat related to the images - my apologies for the size of the jpgs:

    Those are beautiful, moxiebean!

The one with the bird screams for a lyric line or caption contest. ;)

I don't particularly agree with article, but I have never been one to care about this type of stuff, either. Plus I don't own a VW and haven't shopped at a Whole Foods in a while, though my neighborhood will be getting one by the end of the year, so that may change a bit.

The Tribune just instituted a sign-in policy (that is free) to read columnists' content, so I am not sure if the link will work for "non-subscribers" .

Interesting article. If you do a google search you can access the article without having to subscribe.

As for Whole Foods, one is opening soon sort-of-near me, too. I like Whole Foods, but they are expensive; I prefer smaller, local health food stores--still pricey, but not as much so. Such is the nature of healthy foods, unfortunately. (Even more off topic from the point of this thread and therefore parenthetical: local farmers' markets are fantastic!) Still, I will visit the new Whole Foods on occasion. Wonder if they play Wilco as background music?

Speaking of brands and products: Does anyone know if the Wilco/Intelligensia coffee will be a go again this fall? I missed it last year and want to try it if it's available again soon.

  6. I am hitting major mid-life crisis mode starting just recently.

    Hang in there!

I think/hope I am finally wrapping one up myself that was up and down over 10 years.. I tempered it by Wilcoizing my life, having kids, letting go of Wilco, spending lots of time with my kids, coming back to Wilco, distancing my reaction to criticism and other negativity, and letting go with a creative streak that I hope will go on for awhile. It all keeps the peace for now.

  7. I am truly not trying to be a downer with this, which came from Wilco a few weeks ago:

"And in just two weeks, they begin the last US leg of The Whole Love Tour with a 2-night stand at one of America's most gorgeous venues -- Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. From those epic Colorado nights through the end of summer, most of you will have one last chance to see the band for before they downshift into the semi-hiatus of recording mode for much of 2013."

Solid Sound is on their calendar for 2013. Maybe next year's big summer vacation could be in New England?

Now that you mention that, I recall reading that news too. Apparently I repressed it!

I could handle a Massachusetts vacation. What's the saying--"when you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen"? If it doesn't work out, then...2014! 2014! I'm patient.

  8.

This is truly tragic.  How can you stand it?!

It isn't easy. However, the Minnesota trip with my husband and kids ought to be fun, so it does lessen the pain! It's our "big" summer vacation. But of course the Rochester, MN show doesn't work out either! Grrrr.....

It had been 5 years between Wilco shows for me until I saw them last December, so this missed live show spell is short in comparison.

    2013! 2013!

  9. Does it have to be photography per se? I have been on a creative bender the past few weeks after a long hiatus and have some Wilco-lyric themed and related projects I could show pictures of here. Right now I don't have access to my photos but could post soon. I won't be heartbroken if they aren't what you're looking for. :-)

  10. The other day I had to make a long solo roadtrip, so I embraced the opportunity to listen to stuff I hadn't for a long time. I don't know what made me take The Flaming Lips The Soft Bulletin with me, because I was lukewarm to it when I first got it long ago (although I do like the Lips), but I'm glad I did--I really connected with it this time. Anyway, this thread came to mind when I paid attention to these lyrics:

When you got that spider bite on your hand

I thought we would have to break up the band

To lose your arm would surely upset your brain

The poison then could reach your heart from a vein

I was glad that it didn’t destroy you

    How sad that would be

    Cause if it destroyed you

    It would destroy me

When you had that accident in your car

That whole thing just really seemed too bizarre

Dodging holes and telephone poles through the dash

A million to one that you would survive such a crash

I was glad that it didn’t destroy you

    How sad that would be

    Cause if it destroyed you

    It would destroy me

But then the last lyrics somehow pull the spider bite and accident images above, and the entire song, together really well. The idea that love is that powerful to make us feel emotionally poisoned or lucky to survive a bad accident/relationship is a great song theme:

When you fell in love, it was so sweet

So devoted, completely swept off your feet

Love is the greatest thing a heart can know

But the hole that it leaves in its absence can make you feel so low

And I was glad that it didn’t destroy you

    How sad that would be

    Cause if it destroyed you

    It would destroy me

  11. His response to my email was- "are you industry or just a wilco fan?"

    "Just" a Wilco fan... :rolleyes

Thanks to you guys who mentioned and found this--fun to watch. Does anyone else think Jeff sounded and looked really bored and/or ticked off about the song request thing, though? Maybe I'm just reading into that as wishful thinking because I didn't go to those shows and am a tad jealous that I didn't get to make one of the 30 requests :P I must continue to work on detachment...

  12. WXRT, here in Chicago, just had their 1990s flashback weekend. Goddamn. It doesn't seem like THAT long ago. At least, it doesn't until I sit and think of it for a little bit.

    Shit.

That is a bit unsettling, isn't it! When I was a teenager in the '80s, I was enchanted by '60s oldies stations and how cool those ancient songs were. Now, there is more time distance between the '80s and now than there was between the '60s and '80s when I was in my teens.

  13. Thanks for sharing that!

Well said about "intuitive" or "free moments" (in a non-jam band way, if that makes sense!). That does seem to describe their style.

Interesting about audiences too. Fans in the audience can sense that too. It's interesting how a makeup of individuals and personalities can affect the feel or dynamic of a show in the moment.

"I’m more concerned with living my life than writing about my life." Love that!

  14. Phone books! So many people and businesses aren't listed in them anymore as they ditch land lines or younger adults who never had a land line in the first place.

Even some newer businesses aren't listed in phone books anymore, even if they have land line phone numbers. There are places I want to call now and then (order takeout, etc.) that I know have been around at least a couple of years but aren't listed in either of our 2 current phone books in yellow or white pages. Usually I can find them online, but sometimes the computer isn't on and my ipod isn't in immediate reach, and I just want to pick up that phone book right next to the phone and find it alphabetically!

That's just something that I have to get used to... There's a Wilco lyric for most every occasion.

  15. One of my favorite authors!

Today in the local newspaper was an AP article about him, and it said how when he was 12, he was delighted that a carnival magician tapped him with a sword and said, "Live forever!" Given his enduring literature, that turned out to be prophetic.
