  1. Same here, very glad some newbies were able to enjoy themselves!

Hey, it gets paid forward :cheers

Seriously, precious little has been said about how the OTS Wilco Ensemble maintains its own comraderie in the Wilco community. You can see by the posting numbers how infrequently most members contribute to this forum, but that doesn't mean that they aren't supporting Jeff and Wilco and their projects and the interests they champion. They will be in attendance at any Wilco-related show in the area (and some quite far off -- I'm going to be in Melbourne with my daughter in March!!), as well as those of anything related to Wilco, including the sub-groups spun off from the Ensemble itself. It's a massive Wilco-induced lovefest, and all devoted to the music and encouraging people to play it. The non-ensemble members who have attended this event (including some VCers who have attended other LRS shows) have remarked how much they have enjoyed seeing Jeff in this environment. He's like a kid playing his own songs with his garage band. He brought 5 guitars to this show (3 acoustic; 2 electric) plus his own amp (a tricked out rig with some kind of volume adjustment modification that he explained, but I couldn't understand). He goes way beyond the two hour time limit supposedly set for these shows. Sue has to drag him out (but this year, she had a friend to help pass the time, so it went even longer). We are so fortunate to have his support, which makes it so important that everybody gets a chance to experience it at least once. Thanks again to those who shared.

  2. We can share photos. And maybe the audio. (Passenger, is the audio going to be shared?)

Audo from last year's show was streamed over bittorrent without objection from the Tweedys. I assume it will happen again this year. But seriously, the best way to see it is to befriend someone who was there. I guarantee they will show you their performance repeatedly until you puke.

Many thanks, again, to Steph and the other "old timers" who gave up their spots so the "newbies" could have a chance. You guys are saints.

    Oh, and speaking of photos...

  3. Scanner :shifty

I'll bet you can take it to Kinkos and they can scan and prolly just email the file. Or there's probably a scanner at your office :)

You give me WAY too much credit. I can't even boot up my computer most days :dontgetit I know we don't have a color scanner at work, and the closest Kinkos is probably in Schaumburg. One of these days...

  4. where were all you Wilco Ensemble people when i was going to the Old Town School of Folk Music?

i didn't meet anyone that was any too cool...

Well, y'all need to start taking classes again. It's gotten much cooler since they started the Wilco Ensemble. B)

  5. Ken, your new avatar is cool, but it's missing the little silver hearts!

:lol She means the copy Jeff autographed for me. That picture was taken at the Old Town School 50th Anniversary show, where some photographer managed to snap Jeff smiling at a weird angle where it looks like he's fawning over me. Jeff made a comment about it, so when he autographed it, he put these little hearts over his head and some lines indicating a directional gaze at me. It's really pretty funny. If I could figure out how to get it onto my computer, I'd post it.

  6. How did the arrangement of Acuff/Rose sound?

It was just like the record -- only guitar (Jeff), mandolin and fiddle. They were going to go through the P.A., and then Jeff suggested that they do it off the P.A., like his live shows. It sounded great live; we'll have to see if Chandler picked them up.

    What Light

Every song played with some configuration of the Wilco Ensemble from the Old Town School of Folk Music. Recorded in High Def with 3 cameras and 16 channel sound.

My heartfelt thanks to Jeff and Sue for all they do.

    I'm going to bed.

  8. (there was one more in 2006, wasn't there? I can't find the thread...)

That was the first Wilco Ensemble show. 1/28/06. I know there's a thread, because Mel won the award for "best first-time poster" But I'm completely clueless about how to search the archives on this site since the format changed.

  9. was acuff rose done without the PA?

Jeff wanted to do it without the PA, but that's a little tough in a theatre like the Auditorium. He did his three solo songs in front of the monitors, and then they moved his mic back when we came out to play with him.

The cool part for me was rehearsing in his dressing room before we went on. Cali Stars was an add-on. We weren't supposed to do it, but once the show went past 10:30, all the union guys at the Auditorium got a pay hike, so the school figured they ought to make the most of it and we got the green light.

  10. :lol Anyway...

...The problem I am facing with talking to my class is that I get the feeling that none of them have heard of Wilco, as strange as that may seem. I fear that I will begin talking about the band and allowing myself to mentally fill in the blanks, and lose them in the process. ("This Tweedy guy dreams of killing people? Whoa!," "Which Jay, now?," "Yankee Hotel What-what?") If anything, I would like this report to be a sort of turn-on for those who are unaware of just how good the band is, and though they haven't been around long enough to really be worthy of a definitive biography, the fact that one was written, one that only touches upon what makes them so good, should be reason enough to read the book and, you know, listen to some of their stuff.

    Wishful thinking...

(And no one knows when Greg Kot was born? I might as well try to contact him myself about that.)

One thing I can tell you is that Jeff commented that Greg seemed to focus on the early years (confirming Kyjygyfyf's observation) and surmised that it was because Greg was already quite familiar with the post-UT musicianship as a result of his work with the Tribune. I detected an element of bitterness in the comment (just MHO) - like that something written about Wilco ought to really be about Wilco and not about tweedy/farrar

  11. Mitchum probably listened to the album once. His is a common reaction of thoe who have done so, and not unlike mine. It's the same reaction I've had the first time I have listened to any Wilco album. Listen to it several times. It grows on you. This guy thinks "Shake It Off" is the worst cut on the record? It's the best!! And it will stand the test of time. The mellower stuff is Jeff in an new paradigm. There were people who thought that "Sgt. Pepper" was the demise of the Beatles (not that I'm comparing this album to that). Artists change, and their environment and lifestyle change and it all has an effect on their music. No one can possibly dispute that this is the strongest Wilco lineup ever.

THAT'S the one I was looking for!! :rock (notice the Lou Malnati's Chicago-style deep-dish pizza and assorted goodies assembled for Jeff to take with him) Thanks, Erin, I'll keep you posted on W.E. stuff.

p.s., I really enjoyed talking to your dad. He used to live in Palatine, where I grew up, and it turns out we have mutual acquaintances. What a small world. :cheers

  13. Sounds like a really wonderful evening, especially Erin's playing! :)

Puts the rest this year to shame.

    But wow....that's quite a statement!

    :brow

Yeah, that was a poor choice of words. :uhoh I didn't mean to insult anybody. I just love the detail in this poster. Every time I look at it I see something else I didn't notice before. That dog looks right out of a Snuffy Smith cartoon.

  14. meh, i didn't know the notes and had them written on a sheet of paper, but had nowhere to put the paper, so i had to put it on a chair, hence, not looking at jeff and not holding the violin as high as usual. sorrrrryyyyy

Y,know, Erin, if you were in the Wilco Ensemble, we would have music stands upon which to place whatever prompts you might need. This year, Jeff and I shared one. We kept pivoting it back and forth, depending on who needed it most at any particular point in time.

Do not apologize! You go, girl! You were absolutely fantastic. The icing on a perfect cake.
