  1. If i went to a pj show and that was my setlist i would be so fucking happy.

All except for Johnny guitar. I can't stand that song otherwise a lot of real gems

The beginning and ending songs alone are pretty incredible.

I heard "Wash" at my first PJ show at Pittsburgh in 2000, which I believe was a pretty big deal at the time. I never would have guessed that one day I'd experience it as an opener.

And I am in full agreement about "Johnny Guitar." I pretty much hate everything about that song.

  2. was sean lennon with them on letterman last night? sure as shit looked like him.

I always think the drummer looks like he could be a member of the Lennon family. I was thinking of John, but I'm sure Sean would be a good comparison as well.

  3. Anyone have a ridiculous time trying to take out the package (that's what she said)?

I sat in my car for 5 minutes before I was able to pull the cd case from the purple cover.

Then I remembered that there was a poster that was probably causing all of this tightness.

I've had the same problem. The last time I attempted to remove the case I thought I might have to resort to scissors. For now I'm just keeping the slip case off. They look kinda cool, but I've had this problem with at least one other CD in the past (Neon Bible).

  4. they only sold 300 copies of the purple online, the other 1700 are at indie retailers. you can find which ones have it here:

Thanks for the information. I think I'll just make do with the CD (I did get the "limited" version of that). I pre-ordered so many albums this month, I couldn't allow myself to buy much vinyl this time around.

  5. I haven't had any problems with skipping on 180 gram vinyl, including the box set. I'm using a pretty decent (meaning older and well cared for) turntable and my audio expert (Dad) has been very good about making sure everything is calibrated properly.

I'm no expert myself, but I do know tracking weight it important, as stated earlier. I'm wondering if a lesser quality player would have difficulty keeping the proper weight?

  6. thanks for the info.

i'm trying to juggle two shows...i'm already confirmed for Buzzcocks, but would hate to pass up a chance to also shoot PJ that same night if i get approved.

Sounds like a good time. I hope it works out for you!

  7. Maybe a few years ago, but Nickleback has done the impossible and out-shitted Creed. I think Creed's break-up/hiatus hindered their shit-making abilities and made them into a joke. Nickleback has only grownin their popularity and reach. I am a teacher at an elementary school, and NB played a concert here in town a few weeks ago, and I have at least a dozen or so kids wearing their shirts.

Point taken. Goes to show that I don't listen to the radio anymore. I tend to think of Creed and Nickelback as contemporaries.

  8. The show in Cleveland was last night. I was underwhelmed. I've parked closer at Wilco shows than I sat a PJ last nite. The sound from where I sat was bad. I've had crap seats at the Q before, and the sound was not as bad as it was last nite. I had similiar seats for Roger Waters -- he sounded great. I didnt't know any songs hardly except for Even Flow. We left early.

I guess that I'm not really much of a fan and didn't realize it until last nite.

I've been so spoiled by Wilco, with never worse than 6th row in a smaller venue where the vibe is more intimate. Last nite felt so canned and not at all what I expected.

I'm sorry you were underwhelmed. I had kind of a bad night myself, but not for the same reasons as you.

Warning: I am about to rant and whine. Do not read further if you're not into that kind of thing.

We enjoyed a nice day in Cleveland, walking around the Rock n Roll Hall of fame and seeing a city I'm not familiar with. My seats turned out to be 10th row center on the floor. We were so excited with the view - I was sure it was going to be another incredible night. I had a perfect view for Band of Horses, who I absolutely loved seeing. I thought Ben did a great job of commanding the arena and it was great to see a pretty big crowd for a Pearl Jam opener. I remember thinking they were worth the price of admission. Thank god for that.

After Band of Horses left the stage things went south for us. A girl showed up directly behind me with the most annoying voice I have heard in my life. From the second she walked up it was obvious there was going to be trouble. She proceeded to let out the most blood curdling screams I have heard in my life between every song, and sometimes in the middle of the quieter songs. Did she really need to howl during "Indifference?" I don't think so! Constant "Wowooooooooos" like a wolf's howl. I shot her many a glare to see if she'd get the picture, but naturally that only ended with her makings some nice comments about me when I turned around. I swear, no note that Mike McCready could have strangled out of his guitar could have compared with that voice directly in my ear. I have no problem with yelling at concerts, but when you have a voice like that you need to shut up or at least tone it down. Eventually I ended up plugging my ears between songs to muffle it.

The show itself started off great with "Wash," and I was able to ignore the "wowooooooooos" and enjoy the show for a while. A few songs in I was rocking out to "World Wide Suicide" when I felt something wet. "Wowooooooo" girl's friend had dropped his beer (from what I can tell it came out of mid air) such that it landed precisely at the feet of my father and I. My purse was wet, my jeans were wet, my shoes soaked through to my socks at one spot, and it came way too close to getting the poster that I luckily had purchased a tube for. I had to hold my purse the rest of the night to make sure it didn't become completely soaked, and my dad got stuck holding the poster tube all night. Completely killed the mood for me, I was so furious with the idiots. The guy offered a lame apology for almost getting the poster wet (did not care that our other belongs were wet), and that was it. On top of that he and the girl were continuously pushing our folding chairs into the back of our legs, until Dad finally pushed back in such a way that they didn't try again.

I spent the rest of the night trying to sing along and force myself to have a good time, but it was a lost cause. I did not enjoy hearing the new songs, my view of Eddie was obstructed 99% of the time by the guy in front of me. I just generally felt like I didn't belong there.

I've read about drunk idiots at concerts many a time, but even at the 3 PJ shows I'd attended I never had a problem. Last night things changed. The off key singalongs and idiots mimicking every move Eddie Vedder made (things I previously appreciated) were getting on my nerves.

The band of good. From where I was the sound was decent. But I don't know if I could survive another night with neighbors like that. This may have been the last time for me.

Hey Maggie -- I know you were pumped for this show -- have a good time?

It took me so long to write my rant that I didn't see this post until after I hit the add "reply button!" See above for my reaction . . .

  9. Don't like Kraig Johnson I take it... I like those songs but the other songs are stronger..still a great cohesive album in my mind!

I don't mind his songs on the Weird Tales album. That one I can listen to without skipping a single track.

  10. I second this. Luckily my last order from them wasn't damaged, but I was appalled at the way it was packaged.

I can't speak to vinyl, but the last couple CD's ordered from amazon.com have come in slimmer, more form fitting boxes (the foldable kind that sort of molds to the shape of the item). Maybe they've improved vinyl packaging as well? I've never had a record show up damaged from amazon, but those huge boxes certainly are wasteful.

Can't decide if need Down by the Old Mainstream on vinyl. I LOVE many of the songs, but there are also a few I can't stomach.

  11. my problem is also completism. i hate having one song by an artist. i like to listen to stuff in the album format. now, if i go back to more cds, finding stuff may become an issue as cds are fast going out of print.

i'm a completist with neil young, jay farrar, jeff tweedy, gillian welch and to some extent, pat metheny.

Take out Pat Methany and Neil Young and even the artists are the same for me. (I should say I'd like to own every Neil Young album, but it's simply never going to happen). And when I was into mp3's I would NEVER buy one song by an artist. I always bought the album. And if I don't like at least 75% of that album, the artist is done for me. Ruins the rest of the music.

I just want to say that I love threads like these because they make me feel like less of a freak. Around here I'm just a normal music lover. In fact, my music knowledge/passion probably doesn't even compare to many of you. In may day to day life the people I know just don't get it. Some are amazed by me (that can be positive or negative). At least one person has implied that as an adult with a job I shouldn't be spending my time on the stuff. Most are simply disinterested in the subject. As a female, the worst are the men who assume I have nothing to say on the subject.

  12. For a couple years I was buying mostly digital. But as time went on I found myself buying stuff I didn't really need (amazon.com deal of the day was dangerous for me), and more than I could reasonably listen to. Still, I didn't really miss the physical product and it was fun to buy tons of music on a whim.

As time went on I became overwhelmed by my collection, and realized that music didn't have the same meaning for me that it used to. It was just too easy. The excitement was gone.

At the beginning of this year I switched back to physical purchases (mostly CD, with some vinyl thrown in). I'm still probably buying more than I should, but I feel I have a greater appreciation for what I buy.

My problem is that I still feel burdened by my iPod. I find myself listening to stuff I don't particularly like just because it's there. I miss the days of just having a three CD changer or even a single disc player, when I would listen to a couple albums over and over because I loved them, not because I felt like I should. Sometimes I consider deleting some of the garbage from my iPod, but I can't bring myself to do it. For instance, maybe if I listen to the Everybodyfield one more time it will finally click. I don't want to take the chance of missing out on something great!

  13. Only recently have I stared to enjoy it more. It helps to hear them live as well.

Took the longest of all the records for me to start liking it.

I listened to it a couple weeks ago, and I have to say the album wasn't as bad as I remembered. Ignoring the lyrics helped.

Less than two weeks until Cleveland! I need to give Backspacer a couple more listens before the show so that I won't be lost.

  14. Pearl Jam has a funny rule about taping. They only allow hand held recording devices only, no external mics, etc.

    There is this site:

    Sidewalk Crusaders.

I do know that Eddie Vedder solo shows are not allowed on Dime a Dozen. I don't know why though.

If you dig around a bit, you can probably find an answer.

There was no taping whatsoever allowed during Eddie's solo "tour." I believe the excuse was that they wanted to keep those shows special for those who were able to attend, or some such thing.

However, I know that at least one show was taped. Eddie's people did a pretty good job of eliminating any links to those shows, but maybe you can find something online if you do some major searching. It's been a while since those shows - perhaps they're not being as vigilant these days.

  15. I'm really liking the album. Not a huge departure from the last 2 but very solid. Wondering if they'll be picking up a significant fan-base opening for Pearl Jam. Days of seeing them in small venues winding down?

Speaking as someone who used to frequent Pearl Jam's message board (and attended a few shows), I think the response will be mixed. Some fans will automatically jump on board for any band Pearl Jam endorses. Others will think BoH are wimpy. I'm sure some will bring out the popular argument that they sound too much like My Morning Jacket (especially given the fact that MMJ is a former PJ opener). Many simply will not show up for an opening act.

I'm looking forward to seeing Band of Horses at the Cleveland show. I've been a fan for a couple years and haven't seen them live before. Their spot on the bill is what made me decide I had to make the trip from PA. Otherwise I would have gone yet another year without seeing Pearl Jam. I'm hoping my fan club membership gets me up nice and close to the stage so that a largely empty arena/ apathetic PJ fans won't ruin the experience for me.

I'm contemplating downloading the new album so that I'll be familiar with the material before the show. Having trouble finding a good link that doesn't require me to register with any sites though.

  16. i would say redhouse painters can be broken down into different categories. the first three albums (colorful hill, I, II) are their own thing. they sound like late 80s acoustic shoegaze with lots of reverb etc. songs are okay, but too long for me and no real riffs. Ocean Beach has much better production and a few great songs, but still not a masterpiece. Songs for a Blue guitar is mark finding his RHP voice. all songs are incredible as is the production. could do without the avant solo at end of paper. Old Ramon i see as the first Sun Kil Moon record. focused, riffage, bad ass!! don't forget mark's solo stuff. much more akin to sun kil moon in the song writing and arranging i think.

    This was VERY helpful. Thanks!

  17. Did you ever go out and buy a CD that is considered "a must have" just because you think you should know something about it?

I think that's exactly how I started listening to Pavement.

I didn't know much about independent music at the time (around 2000, I think), but I had heard about Pavement somehow and just knew they were I band I was meant to check out. They didn't fit in with the radio friendly alternative rock I generally listened to, but I eventually bought Terror Twilight anyway just to try them out. Pavement, along with Sonic Youth, changed the way I listened to music, though it still took me quite a while to get out of my mainstream rut altogether.

I haven't listened to either band in quite a while. I may have to get those CD's out for something different.

  18. i found sun kil moon while listening to pandora a couple years ago and grabbed up ghosts of the great highway and the ep that went along with that. then april came out, i grabbed it, loved it, and decided to check out the red house painters...with not as much luck. the thing about it is, in sun kil moon, mark's voice sounds more elegant, less nasal to me. there are some good rhp tracks that i've found i like, but i don't dig it near as much as skm.

those of you more seasoned rhp fans, what do you think?

    anyway, this is great news.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I've actually disliked what I've heard of Red House Painters. I found the songs themselves to be kinda average/boring, and I agree the vocals are pretty nasal.

The album I own is Ocean Beach. Can anyone give me an idea as to weather you'd consider that one to be a good representation of what Red House Painters did?

To get back on track - I love Sun Kil Moon and can't wait to hear the new album!

  19. The clear edition of Neko Case's Middle Cyclone sounds good, too. It's thinner and, well, clearer than its black vinyl cousin, and I was worried that would mean noisier as well. Thankfully not the case.

I'm glad to hear that the sound is good. I was wondering about that myself, but couldn't pass up the chance to buy a copy. Other than a white Pearl Jam 45 that I bought last year, this is my first experience outside the world of black vinyl. I'm looking forward to listening!

  20. I'm soooooooo glad I have today and tomorrow off from work.

My box set arrived this morning in beautiful condition (along with two stickers). This is the first vinyl box set I've purchased, and I'm blown away by the beauty and weight of the set. This one is going on my bookcase rather than in the record cabinet.

As an added bonus, my clear Neko Case Middle Cyclone vinyl was sitting on the porch next to the Wilco box when I opened the door this morning. Going to have lots of fun with the turntable today!
