and yet another for Mr. Heartbreak...
JOE (somewhat exhausted):
These executives have plooked the fuck out of me
And there's still a long time to go
Before I've paid my debt to society
And all I ever really wanted to do was
Play the guitar, and bend the string like
Reent-toont-teent-toont-teenooneenoonee..
I've got it
I'll be sullen & withdrawn
I'll dwindle off into the twilight realm of my own secret thoughts
I'll lay on my back here till dawn in a
Semi-catatonic state
And dream of guitar notes that would irritate
An executive kind of guy..
(And sure enough,Joe dreams up a few of those guitar notes that every executive despises...those low ones...every exec knows it's only the records with the high-squeally ones that get to be hits...except for Duane Eddy)
Well I guess that one did the trick
If they only coulda heard it
Have a dozen of 'em woulda strangled
While they was suckin' on each other's dick
But that was only a bunch of imaginary notes I played
Just a little extra somethin' to keep me
Goin' from day to day
But that's okay...
I'll be gettin' outta here pretty soon
Then I won't have to live in this ugly fuckin' room
Can't wait to see
I can't wait to see what it's like
On the Outside Now....(etc.,etc.,etc...)
(and Joe just lays there dreaming of imaginary guitar notes for years on end, until they finally let him out...)

The B-Side is gonna be called "The Claritin Allergy Song"
I'll hope for the best here but my respect for these guys went down the tubes years ago.

Who---do you think you are?
What do you mean
When you put us all down
Walkin' round in circles
With your nose to the ground
You think you're sayin' something
Because you're makin' a sound
You say you've seen it all
You don't want to see no more
But you don't get up & go
Until they throw you out the door
It's a long,long,long,long way to go home
I'ts a long,long,long,long way to go home
Any which way you are tempted to roam
It's a long,long,long,long,long,long way
Way to go home
Who----'s it remind you of
What do you do
When you do your own time?
Did you run away
From the scene of the crime?
I feel as though I know you
Could you spare me a dime
It's a lot less than prison
But it's more than a jail
I'd tell you all about it
But that's another tale
It's a long,long,long,long way to go home
It's a long,long,long,long way to go home
Any which way you are tempted to roam
It's a long,long,long,long,long,long way..
You say you've seen it all
You don't care to see no more
Of the hungry,the homeless
The sick and the poor
You say you've seen enough
To last you all your days
Like the moon in high Heaven
You're just going through a phase
It's a long,long,long,long way to go home
It's a long,long,long,long way to go home
Any which way you are tempted to roam
It's a long,long,long,long,long,long way
Way to go home
Who----do you want to be?
What do you need
To set your body free?
I don't mean to pry
This ain't no third degree
But looking at you baby
You remind myself of me
There's any way to tell you
Any way,any way to persuade
I'd really love to spare you
The mistakes I've made
It's a long,long,long,long way to go home
It's a long,long,long,long way to go home
Any which way you are tempted to roam
It's a long,long,long,long,long,long way
Way to go home
RIP Vinnie!

Everybody has been burned before
Everybody knows the pain
Anyone in this place
Can tell you to your face
Why you shouldn't
Try to love someone
Everybody knows it never works
Everybody knows,and me
I know that door
That shuts just before
You get to the dream
You'll see
I know all too well
How to turn,how to run
How to hide behind
A bitter wall of blue
But you die inside
If you choose to hide
So I guess instead
I'll love you...

I got this in the mail yesterday and it's actually pretty good. Probably the most shocking was Bill Mallonee (Vigilantes of Love) at #65. I agree he's a great songwriter but he had to be one of the more obscure acts on the list.
Vigilantes of Love..WOW! Hadn't heard that name for years...my wife & I had our 1st date seeing those guys at the Patio(a Tupelo stronghold) & we were impressed

Kudos,Groo! I'll be adding this one..

once was a young man
who had a strange dread
from the tops of his shoes
to the bottom of his head
put his face to the wall
as he got up out of bed
he was drawn to the call
never knowin where it led
the strangest feeling grew & grew
and through his mind it spread
somehow everybody knew
the secrets in his head
with no mistake from what he heard
a most uncommon sound
his vision blurred,his breathing stirred
no reason could be found
no reason could be found
so he turned out the lights
and he locked every door
tried everything he might
but he heard it all the more
then he ran to the hillside
and he wandered by the shore
heard the sound even louder
than the ocean's mighty roar
so he sat right down, the truth to learn
brushing back his wild mustache
and as he left no stone unturned
his life before him flashed
his mind complained,his body groaned
his faith put to the test
and making no left turn unstoned
he got it off his chest
straightforward,he confessed
so the story doesn't end here
if it ever does at all
just a letter to the sender
handwriting on the wall
take a ride by the hillside
take a wander by the shore
hear the sound even louder
than the ocean's roar
hear the sound even louder
than the ocean's roar...

"Pale Blue Eyes" is good, but yeah, the whole adultery angle to it could make it weird. I was speaking from experience with "Perfect Day" though--that song is gold.
Both good choices...since we're talking Looooo,if they're into the kink,"Venus in Furs"
Ok then,I must say my wife loves Mountain Bed & California Stars..bless her..

Some thoughts & opinions from Row #19...
I would've wrote more last nite but we were all wrung out from the daze events..including someone hitting my truck on the way down Everyone was OK tho...
After that, things improved significantly.Wine tasting at Olivers in the afternoon, excellent Dragonfly I.P.A. at Upland pre-show (thanx for the heads up on that place,Boots )
As for the show itself, nice call to open w/ Airline on the day after Easter! I've been to a number of tour openers with other bands (esp. GD) & they usually have a rough kind of electricity all their own...cues blown, little mistakes but HIGH energy! Not really the case for most of last nite....what i heard was a very professional,well-oiled machine cranking out the stock setlist w/ few surprises. Not a bad thing at all,but I DO love surprises!! As has been said, setlist zen IS the key to enlightenment.
Very strange crowd at first...then Jeff started talking about Woodgrain's letter. Not long after he seemed to goad the crowd into loosening up a bit & BOOM!! People start running down front to the pit (thought it was a Phish show there for a minute).Damned if ya do,damned if ya don't.
Spiders I found to be especially good..near the end of the song, they dropped it down to a near-whisper & then SLAMMED right back into the finale
I agree w/ This Year's Girl in that Always in Love was a definite highlight for me...actually the run from about Monday on was really rockin' & achieved some transcendence..it just wasn't one continuous mind-blower.
My wife was at her first show & LOVED it! Got many of her faves so that was nice...I think she's been converted!
Absolutely a fine evening W/ perfect weather & an excellent show! Thanks to all!!
