  1. I wonder if another opener will be announced in the coming weeks. Wishful thinking would be Liam Finn since he recently worked on the 7 Worlds Collide album...but an additional opener would just be a bonus at this point. It's already such a great bill...

  2. If history is any indicator, don't they usually stream their new album roughly a month before release date? If that's the case, then hopefully, we only have another couple weeks of the waiting. The slow, agonizing waiting....

  3. do you think we'll ever get live streaming video at one of these things? too expensive, i guess. plus, would it just be one camera on lockdown the whole time? i mean, i'd be fine with that, but still...just curious.

  4. Ashes of American Flags had its New York premiere tonight at the IFC Center in the West Village. It was a sold-out screening and was being billed as "Movie Night with Fred Armisen". Fred came out and introduced the film and the directors, talked for a bit, and said one of his favorite moments was watching Nels during A Shot in the Arm, describing him as an unsung musical hero.

As others have stated here, the film looks and sounds INCREDIBLE. Songs are given a chance to breathe and play in their entirety at various theaters and clubs throughout the US. They really cranked the volume up in the theater and the sound was pristine. Several folks in the audience had a role in the film, including a few cameramen and women (Nikos Kourkoulakos included) and Eli Janney, the person responsible for the concert recording in the film. After some of the songs, it was very difficult to restrain myself from clapping, but as I quickly learned, no one was going to be clapping after the performances in the movie, and I didn't want to be "that guy." Very different experience from when I saw IATTBYH at Cinema Village and people were clapping and cheering after songs. Maybe the 9:30 screening was going to be rowdier...who knows.

All of the performances in the film are great, but highlights include A Shot in the Arm, Impossible Germany, and Via Chicago. I got chills running up and down my spine after hearing/watching these. After the screening, Fred, Brendan, and Christoph came back to the stage and talked for a while before taking questions from the audience. I think some people were confused and thought Brendan/Christoph also directed IATTBYH, and the questions seemed to reflect that, but I could be wrong.

All in all, a great night, and I can't wait to pick up the DVD this Saturday!

  5. bbop, you do indeed rule. i've been checking the screening schedule often for a NYC screening. thanks for the news tip! i couldn't believe i got tickets with it only one week away...

  6. Just curious if anyone made it to the premiere of Ashes of American Flags in Montana a few days ago? Here's hoping for a NYC screening sometime before the DVD release.

One of my favorite memories is catching the limited release of I am Trying to Break Your Heart at Cinema Village in NYC before I moved up here. It was only my second visit to New York and I had no idea where anything was or how to navigate the subway system. I got really lost, ran several blocks, barely made it to the theater in time, and was told there was literally one seat left. I sat down as the opening credits rolled and had an awesome time watching the movie with a packed house of fans clapping after songs, etc etc.

Anyway, it would be cool to relive something like that with the new film....minus the getting lost and running around of course.

  7. MattZ, great review of the show...I don't know if I just hyped the show up too much in my head or what, but I did walk away a bit disappointed myself. Agreed that the highlights were MMJ and the Roots (Tift Merritt was also a pleasant surprise--I thought she did a fantastic job with 'A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall'). When everyone came out for the obligatory 'All Along the Watchtower' at the end, I couldn't help but think it would have been so much better if they just brought out MMJ to play it and end the show. They are the only ones who could have matched the intensity and electricity lingering in the room after the Roots.

And I feel like I lost a little bit of respect for John Doe last night. Ok, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for needing a little help on 'Ballad of a Thin Man' (even though you had weeks to basically learn the lyrics to 3 songs), but reading your cheat sheet for lyrics to "All Along the Watchtower'?!? Kind of lame...

I found Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros on Myspace, but there is no streaming music. There was a live video, but I haven't watched it yet. At least they were somewhat entertaining...I wonder if that girl knew that her entire dress was see-through ;)

Was definitely bummed that there was no Cat Power or Glenn Hansard and Marketa Irglova.

I'm sure it takes a bit of a herculean effort on everyone's parts to put a show like this together, but the mix/feedback problems on many of the songs really were a detriment.

  8. The lineup for the I'm Not There concert at the Beacon Theater in NYC looks phenomenal, but the question is, will Jeff and Nels show up to perform? The show promises "Special Guests", Jeff does Simple Twist of Fate on the soundtrack, Nels is a member of the Million Dollar Bashers who are scheduled to perform, and Wilco is off on Nov. 7th, but they'd have to fly from Belgium to New York to Spain in the span of 3 days. Seems a bit much, but who knows...

    Lineup below:

    Calexico

    Cat Power

    The Roots

    My Morning Jacket

    J Mascis

Yo La Tengo with Buckwheat Zydeco

    Glenn Hansard and Marketa Irglova

    Joe Henry

    John Doe
