  1. I was in college in Atlanta in 1970's. One night, we heard that Cowboy, a group out of Macon was playing on Peachtree at The Electric Ballroom. Tommy Talton and Scott Boyer were the key members and wrote "Please be with Me" with Duane on Dobro.  They also played on Laid Back. We got a front table, had dinner and drinks ( legal at 18 back then), and enjoyed the show. After a few songs, they introduced "some friends" and the Allman Brothers took the stage, minus Dickie. What happened for the next 3 plus hours was unbelievable. At one point, they were jamming to You Don't Love Me  and at a somewhat similar pause as in Fillmore, my buddy yelled "play all night" which got a look and a laugh from Gregg. Many years later, I saw him in Nashville for a book signing. He was just a shadow but remained gracious and despite a sign that said no personalized messages, he did for me when I brought up that story.

Yeah, all these deaths strike home and keep reminding me we are all here for a very short time.

  2. I had a few instances many many years ago when I had control of the turntable at a party where the booze flowed and the gender ratio was just right, and Full House, and especially Blow Your Face Out were my preferences to play in that situation. If you want to keep everybody in a good mood you cannot go wrong with those records. They are two of the best live LPs, and if you can't get off on those there might be no help for you.  :D

    Damn straight...

I also really enjoy his later work. More jump blues and jazz with Magic Dick and some work with Duke Robillard.

What's sad is that one reaches an age when your friends, classmates, and heroes start to pass. And I do not mean 27..

  3. Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for The Who at the Omni in Atlanta, 1973 (maybe 1974).  They played an encore. I was in college in Atlanta then and many of us had heard Skynyrd on local radio and had familiarity but had not seen them. The Who were great but had issues with all the Quadrophenia recorded tapes during the show. Read later that the 2 groups competed nightly for best performance.  Hard to believe Skynyrd used to play in front of a giant confederate flag.

  4. Are you guys ignoring the anti-Trump protests, beatings, calls for assassinations that are happening around the country?  An American flag is somehow a sign of racism? As a Hispanic and naturalized American, I find it more offensive that you guys think I need safe spaces. I have read this column for a long time and every once in awhile participated in the discussion, usually stopping after being called ignorant, racist, Islamaphobe, etc. And yet you guys are offended by Trump signs and the flag? Maybe that type of thinking is exactly why Clinton lost. I think Kevin has it right.

There has to be room in the Democratic Party for guys like Sam Nunn and Jim Webb.

  5. Kevin, you are nuts if you think a video made by Hollywood progressives is going to make undecideds go "Gee, I think I will vote for Hillary".   People voting for Trump look at it as a big middle finger to progressives, elites, wall street, career politicians ,who have steered the country in the wrong (as they/I perceive) direction.  The more these people shrill on about racist islamaphobes, the more likely it is they vote for Trump instead of Gary Johnson. Hillary is not a consideration.

  6. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy both albums. I am disappointed in that after a few listens, I go back to the tried and true. I do like SBS a lot, too.  Maybe disappointed is too strong a word. Maybe my expectation that every album from the band I love so much will be a top 100 all time record is counterproductive.  Maybe I just need to experience the new songs live.

The other possibility ,which I am dreading facing, is that after a certain age, one experiences music differently.

Too damn early to get philosophical.

  7. I agree with Junior. I have read comments from the board about SW and S. After several takes, I am disappointed. Frankly, there is a dearth of melody and has been for some time. Just my 2 cents worth.  I listen and enjoy (somewhat) the newer material but I wind up listening to Being There through AGIB.

  8. I have been to many great concerts. The Who in 1973. Allman Brothers before that. Wilco many times. I am only going with one, however. 1972, Chicago. I was in Chicago for a forensics summer program at Northwestern. One Saturday we were bused to supposedly a Melanie concert. You old guys may remember her. However, she had canceled. Instead, they booked Howling Wolf. We were all in HS and really stupid. We had never heard of this guy. Stupid jokes. The Wolf comes on and just kills it. Past his prime but , God, what a concert. The band, unreal. Much of it he was sitting with a hankie and the microphone. Numerous standing ovations. He died a few years later. I feel privileged for seeing him. It started a lifelong fascination with the blues and rock history.

  9. I guess it depends on your perspective. I have been on this board for awhile and have been referred as racist, islamaphobe, rube etc. The level of smugness here is pretty unreal. I also find it absurd that you insist the republican party has been hijacked by the alt-right. This is coming from a party of Obama, Clinton, and Bernie. There are no moderate Democrats left. Kennedy would not be in your party today. Neither would LBJ.

I think many are fed up with Washington, backroom deals, lies, and empty rhetoric regardless of party, political background, or social status. Trump/ Sanders have a lot more in common than many care to admit.

I voted for Kasich in my primary. I think he beats Hillary easily. I don't know who I am voting for- but I will never vote for Hillary.

  10. I am sorry but racists, homophobes, xenophobes, etc. are deplorable. They are the scum of the earth. The people Clinton is decrying will never except her as president. Why should she extend a courtesy to people who would like her shot for treason? Or a person who refuses to see her as an equal because of her sex? Just because she wants to be president she has to tip toe around these assholes and not call a spade a spade? Now I am not putting all Trump supporters in this group, nor am I putting all of conservatism in this group. Nor is Clinton.

The alt-right, racist wing that has taken control of the GOP. These are the deplorables. You keep thinking Clinton is lumping all of the right in this group. Please realize this is not what she said. Unfortunately it was misconstrue and inferred that she did. She is trying differentiate the far right racists form the moderates. She is saying, look at GOP, look what has taken over the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower, and Regan. Look at your candidate, look at his rhetoric, look at these groups that support him. Is this what you want your party to be?

  11. I have no problem with Kaepernick kneeling during the anthem, I don't think it's going to have any measurable effect on a serious issue, but kneel away, sir. But when I saw photos of him wearing socks with pigs in police garb during training camp before he started his protest, I was surprised that the team and/or league didn't severely discipline him for wearing them. After the head of a national police organization complained about the socks, this was Kaepernick's statement: "I wore these socks, in the past, because the rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments, not only put the community in danger, but also the cops that have the right intentions in danger by creating an environment of tension and mistrust," Kaepernick wrote on Instagram on Thursday. "I have two uncles and friends who are police officers and work to protect and serve ALL people. So before these socks, which were worn before I took my public stance, are used to distract from the real issues, I wanted to address this immediately."

He isn't a bright man. If he is worried about law enforcement officers like his uncles and friends being put in danger, then he shouldn't have worn those socks. A public figure calling police pigs could aid in "creating an environment of tension and mistrust" that puts "cops that have the right intentions in danger". Idiot. That he escaped discipline is a sad comment on the 49ers and the NFL.

  12. Usually get into it as it unravels. Personally like the timed sports- swimming, track. Less interested in the subjectively judged sports.

I have been thinking of the Olympic venue.  Seems cost issues are always present no matter who hosts the games. The leftover arenas are not always used.  Should there be a single place for future Olympics? Perhaps Athens? Every country contributes to the costs, maintenance, security etc. Every country shares in the profits. Athens gets a boost to their local economy.

Just a thought. Doubt this would ever come to pass.

  13. Saw the show last night at the Ryman. Very rowdy and happy crowd- I don't think I was the oldest there.  Great band: 3 guitarists, bass, drums, keyboard, violin,, backup singers, and the best, a striking lady on sax , other horns, and keyboard.

Ferry seemed thrilled with the crowd.  Very little talk between songs. All performed wonderfully.  Highlights were of course, the older songs: Slave to Love, More than This, Avalon, and my personal favorite, Virginia Plain. Encore included Jealous Guy.  I never had the chance to see Roxy Music and last night was wonderful. I took my oldest daughter who is familiar with the songs and she also loved it. Great night.

Jeff Tweedy introduced Nick Lowe at the Ryman as the world's coolest guy.  My opinion only, but Bryan Ferry is so cool and debonair that he makes Nick look pale in comparison.

  14. Maybe so. However, you're original premise was that the press had no balls. I cannot imagine a reputable reporter content with not asking questions of Hillary because others had questioned her. And she was hardly "cleared" about emails.

In any case, all politicians have a dislike of being questioned by the press, even when they are sympathetic. Her avoidance of press conferences is a fact.

I am just glad this awful election and awful choice is almost over. At least a new Wilco album and football are almost here.

  15. Liberals will vote for Clinton and conservatives will vote for Trump. All so called issues such as experience are largely irrelevant to many people. I doubt any of you guys refused to vote for Obama because of his lack of experience compared to his opponent.

What it comes down to is what middle of the road voters plan to do. Does immigration reform attract more voters than free tuition and more socialism? Does Trump scare you more than Hillary? I know how most on this forum feel but there are just as many who feel opposite elsewhere.

Either way, these are clearly the most polarizing candidates in my lifetime.
