  1. I have the triple 7", too. I didn't know they were re-releasing it. Awesome stuff! I think Nels said he was copying Polvo by releasing a triple 7". Polvo did that with their Celebrate the New Dark Age ep.

Now all you need is Silencer (recently reissued), Chest and their various 7" releases, all of which are pretty easy to track down.

Yeah, I will have to get those. Last summer, I also found a Quartet Music's (Jeff Gauthier, Eric Von Essen, Nels, and Alex Cline)"Window on the Lake." Amazing record. I have to keep getting more of Nels' stuff even though I already have a ton.

  2. I remember considering coming down for that show, then imagining those oven-like conditions. That changed my mind in a hurry!

A few Nels shows in New York that I've heard about in the last few days...

Nels and Marc Ribot will be playing two sets at Le Poisson Rouge in the West Village next Wednesday at 8:30 and 10:30 (doors and hour earlier for each set). $15 per set in advance or $20 the day of the show. They're also sharing the cover of Downbeat magazine in July!

On Monday, July 11, Nels will be playing two sets--8 and 10 p.m.--with the Les Paul Trio at the Iridium Jazz Club as part of their Les Paul Guitar Tribute series. Tickets are $32.50 per set.

NPR is showing a broadcast of a performance by Jenny Scheinman's Mischief and Mayhem (Jenny + Nels + Jim Black + Todd Sickafoose) on Wednesday, August 17, as part of their Live at the Village Vanguard series. The Vanguard doesn't have their August schedule posted yet, but I'm hoping this is a new week of shows for them and not a segment NPR has been holding onto since the week they played there last July. If they're playing again, I"ll definitely be making the trip down, because they were fantastic last summer (and speaking of oven-like conditions...).

Nels' website is also showing that the Singers (as a quartet including Yuka C. Honda) will be playing jazz festivals in Austria and Switzerland at the very end of August.

I pre-ordered a copy of The Veil, so hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week. I'm also waiting for a copy of the limited vinyl release of the Nels Cline Trio's Ground that I ordered last week. Apparently it's a three 7" set. I'm glad to see the Trio's work getting new attention. While I doubt it's feasible for Cryptogramophone to start releasing vinyl, I'd love to see another label (maybe dBpm...?) release the Singers' albums on vinyl.

Yeah, these are all great shows especially the Marc Ribot and Nels Cline duo! I wish I could be there. Since marrying Yuka Honda, I think Nels has moved to New York. I don't remember if I heard him say it in an interview, but the constant shows he has been playing in New York and not in LA might prove my theory. Plus, my friend recently saw him at a Tune-Yards show in NYC. This gives me more reason to move to New York soon.

I actually own the three 7" set on vinyl of the Nels Cline Trio's "Ground." I found it on amazon about a year and half ago for $10, and I bought it right away. My girlfriend also bought me for my birthday this year the vinyl release of Nels Cline Trio "Sad."

  3. Yeah, I got a lot expect Big Star's 3rd. It was gone by the time I got there at 8:20am in a town (Appleton) of 70,000! I would understand if this was Chicago, but I was bit surprised it was gone. But I did get:

    Mississippi John Hurt- The Immortal

    Skip James- Today!

    John Fahey- Requia

Jimi Hendrix- Fire (alternative version/Touch Me (Instrumental previously unreleased)seven inch

The Beach Boys- Good Vibrations/Heroes and Villians mono 78

    Deerhoof- Friend Opportunity

    Bob Dylan- Brandeis 1963 Live

    and they had some deals:

George Harrison- All Things Must Passed (the new reissue analog remasters) It was 39.99 compared to its regular 49.99.

Bob Dylan and The Band- The Basement Tapes. Used for $ 9.99.

Slint- Spiderland. New for for $ 5.99

I am pretty happy with what I got though, but I did want that Big Star album and I thought about gettting the Sonic Youth and Nirvana releases, but I already was spending too much!

  4. I am thinking about buying a mini guitar amp as a practice amp. The ones I am looking at are Vox Mini 3, Pignose 7-100, and Orange Micro Crush Amp. I play with a Fender Jazzmaster with humbuckers and I have heard the Pignose 7-100 can cause problems for guitars with humbuckers and it can also have trouble with a clean tone sometimes. I was wondering if this was true?

Also for any of these amps, would it be a problem (such as blowing the speaker out) if I put a lot of effect pedals through it such as delay pedal, fuzz, distortion, kaoss pad, reverb, whammy pedal?

  5.

Additionally it would be interesting to see what the reissue houses sell as well. Drag City realistically prices its LP which is very thoughtful.

    LouieB

Yeah, they do! And its free shipping at least a couple of times I have bought stuff. I always try to buy a Drag City record from their website.

  6. I am 21 and I buy records. When I was younger I didn't because my mom believed they were old fashion and they could break and scratch easily. Thus I bought lots of CDs.

However, near the end of my sophomore year in college, I decided to start buying records because to me they do sound better after listening to records my friends had. Plus, I love the bigger art cover. The first thing I bought was Sonic Youth's "The Eternal" (which came out that day) and the Minutemen's "What Makes a Man Start Fires." I now have around 90 records.

I am glad there has been a little resurgence in vinyl because everyone is reissuing stuff older material that was harder to find or is now in better quality. For example, Sonic Youth has reissued most of their back catalog on 180 gram vinyl (Sister and Bad Moon Rising come out next year).

I have some friends who do buy records. However, they only buy what they really like. For example, when the new Joanna Newsom album came out. Two of my friends downloaded the album illegally. One of them really liked it and the other thought it was okay (he was a bigger fan of Ys). Thus, the one who really liked it bought it on vinyl.

I don't download at all expect if it is a bootleg of a show, which obviously you can't buy at most record stores or online. I prefer to own a physical copy preferably vinyl. I feel like I am rare breed in my generation.

  7. The Singers recorded two segments for NPR this week, one in their studio in Washington DC and one for the Piano Jazz program in New York. No word yet on air dates for either of them, but I'll keep an ear out for them.

Sweet. Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to hear them.

  8. It is worth a shot....actually Apple put out lots of records and ran well to a point...

I just really like Nonesuch as a label...lots of class acts on it, but if Wilco wants to branch out, well they have plenty of fans.

    LouieB

Yeah, I thought Nonesuch was a great fit for them. From an outsider's view, they seem like a good label. But for a band like Wilco, I can see them wanting to move away. I really think labels are only good for an upcoming band by getting them press and distribution. A band like Wilco does not need that from a label anymore since as we have discussed before Lou their stature has grown.

  9. I'm bumping this thread to remind everybody of the shows Nels will be playing in the next few weeks.

    With the Singers:

tomorrow at Dazzle Jazz in Denver (both sets are sold out!)

Thursday and Friday: High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, CA (Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Friday at 11:15 a.m.)

Tuesday, 7/6: le poisson rouge in New York (sets at 7:30 and 10)

Wednesday, 7/7: Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia (with Richard Crandall and Good For Cows)

Thursday, 7/8: The Black Cat, Washington DC (with Insect Factory)

With Jenny Scheinman's Mischief and Mayhem (with Jenny Scheinman, Todd Sickafoose, and Jim Black):

7/13-7/18: The Village Vanguard, New York (sets at 9 and 11 each night)

7/19: The Stone Seminar at the Stone, New York (corner of East Second Street and Avenue C), 7-9 p.m.: "Nels speaks about music, guitars, and life."

I don't know what I'm more excited about--getting to see my favorite band for the first time in two years next week or not having to go on a 12-hour road trip to do it! :dancing

Enjoy it! I wish I could see the Singers again this summer. I just saw Nels play with On Fillmore and he was great. Once again, his playing with them really showed how he can basically play anything.

  10. I am really digging the new album a lot. Great stuff. Too bad that the Singers are not playing close to the Midwest, but I am looking forward to seeing him play with On Fillmore at the end of June at Pritzker Pavilion.

  11. I went to one up here in Appleton, WI and it was pretty packed too. I was actually very shocked how crowded it was. Spent way too much money, but it was worth it. I got Mississippi John Hurt's "Today" and John Fahey's "The Yellow Princess" and five other records too. I wish I could have found the 7 inch record of "Paperback Writer/Rain" by The Beatles, but the store said they did not have it.

Hopefully, people will continue to buy at record stores.

  12. I think I will buy it even though it is a bit pricey. I am also going to get Deerhoof's "Apples O'" on vinyl record store day too because it is being reprinted.

I am guessing "Theologians" and "How to Fight Loneliness" will be on the bonus tracks since they have been released for something else that I can't remember.

  13. Good news, you can actually here it for yourself by downloading the Chelsea Walls theme from this show: Loose Fur Brooklyn Owl and Bear. It's a pretty longish instrumental around the main riff of the Chelsea Walls theme with a bit of Jim's Prelude to 110/220/Women of the World (the first song on Eureka) mixed in. I like it quite a bit, good driving music.

    --Mike

Yeah, it especially rocks come around the 10 min mark.

  14. That should be pretty great. Here's what Nels said about it in his new News post on his website:

    http://www.nelscline.com/news.html

STAINED RADIANCE: NELS CLINE & NORTON WISDOM (Greenleaf DVD)

Directed by the estimable Aeght Nign and produced by yours truly, this is the long-overdue document of the duo I do with painter Norton Wisdom. He paints, I improvise. The DVD, filmed at The Smell in Los Angeles, features two full-length performances/improvisations and bonus features, like the amazing "shoulder cam" and "helmet cam" footage of Norton doing his thing, as well as interviews with the duo that is Stained Radiance. Look for it on the Wilco merch table and somewhere else after mid-January!

Yeah, I heard about this. It looks awesome. I am going to pick it up at the Wilco merch table when I see them in Madison in Feb.
