  1. Wow, any idea what that is going to cost, and where you get it?

On another note, I just learned that:

Teenage riot is about J. Mascis (among other things).

Silver rocket is about Andy Warhol

The Sprawl is about shopping/commercialization of everything

Cross the Breeze is about having sex with the devil

Daydream nation just gets better with every listen.

where did you learn all this?

  2. Jeff probably hasn't received his Ashes pre-order from Musictoday yet.

I actually haven't received my pre-order yet, and I ordered it on April 15th. I thought they might send them out on April 28th, and I chose the cheapest shipping method (6.70) which isn't cheap for just shipping a DVD in the minimum of six days!

Yet I have not receive it, has this happen to anyone else? I am sorry if this question has been asked before, but I am curious of whether or not if I should email musictoday about my pre-order not showing up since it looks like now Wilco is not even working with them anymore.

One thing for sure (not unless they lower their shipping prices) I am just going to a record store and to buy Wilco album because I could have bought the DVD a long time ago but I decided to support the band directly.

  3. Hey Jrh79,

The band I am in The Chairs opened for you at The Cactus Club in Milwaukee on Feb. 22 (I believe). I am Phil, and I am in the lead guitarist in the band-the guy with the jazzmaster.

    Glad to see you here!

And everyone should check out their music, they are pretty stellar.

    Phil

  4. Thanks for everyone for sharing the info. Really great stuff! I think I am going to get the Acoustic Guitar Trio record soon.

And I can't wait to hear the new Nels Cline Singers record though I think it will take a while for it to come out. I remember Nels saying something about "Coward" taking a while to come out because it is harder nowadays for a smaller label such as Crypto to release an album.

  5. Hey Phil,

I'm gonna be out of town this weekend (doing some recording in WI), but have a great show!

And, is that Barry Adamson in your avatar?

Thanks! Have a great time recording.

And Lou is right, it's Monk.

  6. So I am in a band called The Chairs (we're a rock n' roll band) and we are about to finish off our Spring Tour 2009 that is promoting our newest album "Laugh, It's Fright," which comes out March 31st.

Our final show is in Chicago tomorrow Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Elbo Room (we're the first band).

So if your in the Chicago area you should come out because our songs have been sounding great on tour and we are really excited to play the Elbo room! It's $9 to get in, and it should be a great show tomorrow with Blue Far Down, Dan Tedesco and the Long Haul, Micah Walk Band, and Ricky IV.

To check our stuff out you can check out:

thechairsband.com (for shows, news, and etc.)

    myspace.com/thechairsband (for our music)

I am usually not one to directly promote my own music on this forum, but I really feel the music I play with this band is fantastic, and we've been working hard over the last several months. And our show tomorrow at the Elbo room is a big one to us, and we would love to be able to have people come out tomorrow.

I hope all is well with everyone, and I am hope to see you tomorrow night.

    Phil

  7. I ran into JIm Becker at Lauries a couple days ago and he said the album would be out in the fall. Seems like a long time. Jim has been out of commission for a few months due to a mugging last fall. I suppose I shouldn't talk about this more than I have but he was injured badly. Luckily he seems pretty good.

That's terrible especially after what happened to them in 2004 if I remember correctly because I believe they got most of their equipment stolen.

  8. I was pleasantly surprised that Crypto shipped preorders so early. I've had mine for about three weeks, too. It's a really brave and beautiful album that shows off his full range. It's amazing that he did it all himself, too--no other musicians, just overdubs.

Oh shit! I am buying mine right now. I saw on their website that they would ship as soon as possible, but I didn't think that soon, which is why I waited till now.

We've been playing a good amount of scatter shows since December, and are going on a big tour week tour most likely the last full week in March. Moreover, we've done a EP, and our starting work on our album this week!

Oh yeah, you can listen to our EP on your website or download for free!

  10. I studied jazz guitar at Manhattan School of Music and then studied privately with Rodney Jones. This was back in the late '80's and I would say there was a definite appreciation for broadening of one's horizons beyond just standards. Rodney also taught Vernon Reid at the same time he was teaching me. Rodney used to tell me that Vernon wanted sooo badly to be a jazz guitarist and he told him that he shouldn't limit himself to what he thought he should be, but rather be what he is. All very zen, I know, but it was true then and it's true now. I see people like Brad Mehldau covering Radiohead and Bill Frisell doing ... everything... and John Scofield playing avant garde jazz, funk and Ray Charles and I think: this is a golden age of jazz where, just like "rock," there are few barriers. So I guess I just think you guys -- and the guy from the Bad Plus -- are just finding bad teachers. Meanwhile, the standards are alive and well. I thought that, while an "all star" Supernatural type of album, McCoy Tyner put out an excellent album of standards just this past year. They sounded fresh and alive on that album to my ears.

I could write pages of rants on the issue of scales and scale boxes, but I'll save that for another time. Suffice it to say, all scales are chords and all chords are scales.

I couldn't agree more. But I love my teacher, he plays guitar in the Milwaukee scene, and he can basically play anything. His whole idea is to learn the style of be-bop so that one at least has some tradition, and then he'll go with you wherever you want to go after that. I mean the guy is pretty open to anything since he made "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden into a pretty killer jazz tune.

And Lou, I couldn't agree with you more about Parker.

  11. Yeah, I guess that's my main problem. We just learn scales for each chord, I guess it comes from modal jazz originally but I haven't learned about any of the cool bebop stuff from the 40s and that was only like 60 years ago now. It seems like I get glared at when I don't play the notes in the scale, it doesn't exactly encourage originality.

And yeah, I don't mind my thread being derailed as long as no one minds that this shows up on the Just a Fan forum.

I am not a huge fan of the idea of scales for each chord; instead, I just like the idea of hitting the chord tones, which is what essentially Charlie Parker did. For example, on a certain chord he would hit it's chord tones (say the 3rd and the 7th), and then encircle a chord tone of the next chord by hitting non-chord tones on the chord he is playing prior to the change of chord.
