  1. i'm stoked to see mark spencer w/ son volt. i have missed the lap steel in recent shows.

of course tonight is the opener and jays fucking website is down.

the new songs jay played on his solo tour (cocaine and ashes, big sur) sound like a return to the alt-country sound of yesteryear. i hope the volt breaks them out on tour.

  2. if you require meaningless banter during a live show to enjoy it, then you will not enjoy seeing son volt. jay goes out, rips through 4 or 5 songs, asks everyone how they are doing and then rips through about twenty more.

jay's vocals may not be up to some peoples standards (not my opinion), but they play as tight as any band out there.

i saw them twice last year and was absolutely blown away each time.

  3. You gotta love rumors. Let's see... playing a tiny bar for no money in SLC or hanging out at home with the family...hmmmm.

    LouieB

they have been known to do such random shows however.

  5. Wow, I like Jay's post-UT output a lot, but I can't even come close to agreeing with you on that one, not that I don't like The Search.

As far as him not living up to his potential, I definitely don't agree with that either. If Jay never made another album after Trace, he met his potential. That he hasn't made anything better since (in many people's opinions) makes no difference, because Trace was that good. The other two original-lineup Son Volt albums are pretty great, too.

i say the same thing about jeff and being there. a truly remarkable recording.

  6. I like The Search, but I don't think it's a patch on AGIB or YHF, only my opinion though so don't set the hounds on me!

    Alex

i can see the yhf side of your argument, but agib doesn't hold up imo. if you took jay and jeff's entire catalog, agib and terrior blues would be at the bottom.

  7. anodyne is by far the best uncle tupelo album and is leaps and bounds over a.m. i stronly disagree w/ the whole farrar blew his load theory, The Search is AS GOOD as anything jay or jeff has ever done.

i listen to a.m. all the time however and think it has moments of greatness.

the step jeff took up to being there was phenominal.

  8. Thanks to a really good friend of mine, i have in my hands the special edition of Sky Blue Sky with DVD, and the Indie CD EP that was given away with it.

I am going to watch the DVD tonight after work, and let everyone know how amazing it is. I'm shaking with anticipation.

Don't forget to check out Wilco on Letterman next week as well.

    Cheers!!!

better take some uppers, otherwise it will put you to sleep.
