  1. Hot: Deeper Down, One Wing, BBN, Country Disappeared

Warm: Wilco (The Song), Sonny Feeling, Everlasting

Cold: You and I (though minus Feist, live I like), You Never Know, I'll Fight, Solitaire

I think Deeper Down is the most interesting song on the album. Granted it's no rip-roaring rocker, I enjoy seeing it live. Cool percussion and timing by Glenn.

And for some reason Sonny Feeling still makes me smile. I like the "ahs" by John and Pat leading up to "remember to show gratitude."

  2. I blame the American way of thinking, where everyone understands that they have a right to be heard, but they think that right applies anywhere at any time.

Haha I might have suggested this but didn't want to seem unpatriotic :shifty

The whole "crankiness" thing is a non-issue to me. The guys are smiling, laughing, joking, having a great time up there. Jeff's just doing what he can to try and calm down the folks distracting away from the show. He's talked several times about wanting people at shows to have a great time, and the me-me-me folks tend to take away from the experience Wilco likes to create.

I enjoy those moments in a Curb Your Enthusiasm kind of way. How many times have you actually told a stranger who's being an ass, "Hey, stop being an ass."

  3. Was at the past two shows -- Atlanta and Durham -- and have to say it was quite a different feel. The Durham crowd was pretty tame in comparison. My buddy and I knew early on the Jesus singalong would be weak, and it was. Of course I was in front row for Atlanta and upstairs at DPAC so that had a lot to do with it.

But the guys were outstanding as usual. The way they put so much heart and thought and joy into what they're doing comes through loud and clear.

The complaints about these epic setlists are funny. I've seen them 12 times now and still haven't heard my fave Ashes yet, but I'm not complaining. Fantastic variety ... I have to get my hands on that version of Spiders. ALTWYS was amazing and great to catch on the second night.

Another thing I noticed is the mild applause for Deeper Down both nights. Am I one of the few folks who like that song? I see that as a great example of Glenn's stellar play. That guy seriously knows what he's doing back there.

Thanks guys for two great shows, and for making driving 1,000 miles in two days well worth it!

  4. After front row in Athens OH last year, it took two days to get rid of the ringing from Pat's Marshall. It WAS worth it! :dancing

I totally regret not getting tix for Pittsburgh.

Yeah I splurged for front row through one of the douchebag ticket sites, and it was well worth it. Would have paid more!

    Ears still buzzing btw :D

  5. That said there is always the grumpy person who just does not want to be at a rock concert. Not my problem! No way to fix that.

So true. Some people just have a hard time enjoying themselves and there's nothing a fellow concert-goer can do about that.

As a person whose back hurts if I stand up for 3 hours straight, I enjoy the option of having a seat for before the show starts and for the mellow moments. Gonna have to suck it up for the GA Montreal show on Saturday!

Another "rule" I go by: If the folks in front of me are standing and I wanna see, I stand. It's Just That Simple.

  6. Last night I became part of the situation by buying two front-row seats for the Atlanta show ($166 listed each, $215 each by the time all the service what-nots are added). Hate to pay off scalpers and the corrupt ticket system, but it's gonna be worth it. I was lucky enough to get legit tickets in the second row five or so years ago. It's amazing and kind of a sensory overload being right there.

Not sure if it's smart to use my tax refund money for this instead of a new set of tires though ... :)

  7. T1. AGIB and YHF (go back-and-forth on this one, might never decide)

    3. SBS (is "You Are My Face" one of the most beautiful -- and kickass -- songs ever, or what?)

    4. W(TA) (perfect amount of "Americana" for my taste)

    5. BT

    6. ST

    7. AM (is this the wrong place to admit I don't even own this?)

Man I can't wait to see these guys again ... Montreal and Durham!

  8. Not sure but "hide your soft skin, your sorrow is sunshine, listen to my eyes, they are hissing radiator tunes" is one of my favorites. I don't know why, but my mind spins about six times faster than usual when thinking about it. :)

  9. It's pretty difficult ranking these, but here's my best shot:

    1. Ashes of American Flags

    2. Poor Places

    3. War on War

    4. At Least That's What You Said

    5. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

    6. Not For the Season

    7. Hell is Chrome

    8. You Are My Face

    9. Misunderstood

    10. Theologians

    11. Kamera

    12. Sunken Treasure

    13. Jesus, Etc.

    14. Muzzle of Bees

    15. Impossible Germany

    16. She's a Jar

    17. Via Chicago

    18. Company in My Back

    19. Pot Kettle Black

    20. Pieholden Suite

While I'm already pretty smitten with the writing on the new record, it's still too early for me to see how those (One Wing, Deeper Down, Country Disappeared, Everlasting) stack up with the favorites I've been listening to for years.

(Damn, I might have to use that list to make my 92nd Wilco mix CD)

  10. I'm really enjoying this new record. I'll add a "here, here" for Sonny Feeling. Something about that song just makes me feel good. And Deeper Down was one of my early favorites, then I saw how they played it live at the Wolf Trap ... wow, Glenn shines like crazy on that track.

The only songs I don't listen to regularly are You Never Know and Solitaire. While I don't like those all that much for now, I think every song on this disc has something interesting going on, whereas SBS had a couple of duds, IMO.

  11. SBS has a special place in hell for me. I don't know what it is about that album that I dislike so, but it's pretty terrible in my book. It does have it's redeeming moments but I be darned if it still gets on my nerves. I guess it's the lamented "dad rock" effect.

This made me laugh. If not for the brilliance of You Are My Face and Impossible Germany, I might agree with you on SBS.

  12. I've been listening to it quite a bit the past month and it grows on me more every time. But having the precise lyrics now ... Jeff never ceases to amaze me with the beautiful, interesting writing. And there are all kinds of wonderful subtle musical moments here too.

After three listens I could already tell I'd like it better than SBS. It's not on the same level as YHF and AGIB for me, but I'm loving it and that would be expecting too much anyway.

Favorites now are Deeper Down, BBN, Sonny Feeling and Everlasting. Least favorite is Wilco (The Song).

    :cheers
