  1. I really think The Replacements are just sort of this Mid-west legend that have been built up by their proponents to be larger than life; and I'm not just saying in terms of Nirvana. Forget about Nirvana for a second. I just think in general, The Mats were second tier 80s. Next to The Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Joy Division, New Order, Husker Du, The Smiths, and other 80's "alternative" bands, I think The Mats pale.

Am I reading this right? A Nirvana fan saying that The Replacements have been artificially hyped into a larger than life legend?

  2. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Born To Run

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

    Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica

The Replacements - Let It Be

    The Beatles - White Album

The Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime

    Radiohead - The Bends

Built to Spill - Keep It Like a Secret

    Wire - Chairs Missing

  3. i listened to Swan Lake (the one that is good, but not mindblowing) at a friend's place. He wouldn't tell me how he got it, and said he was sorry, but there was no way he could make me a copy. i was just pleased to hear it, so i didn't push the issue. if you dig around here there are four tracks that have leaked (All Fires, Are You Swimming In Her Pools?, Nubile Days - all with spencer on lead vox, and The Freedom - with Dan singing, which is the best thing on the record, imo... but im a Destroyer fanatic)

I got a Hold Steady promo, cause im doing an interview with Craig and Tad tomorrow ( :rock )... it has super crazy copy protection and wouldnt even play in the first cd player i tried... and plus, their promotions people would be super pissed about it leaking, and they are good people who send me nice things, so even if i could i wouldnt rip it.. but i cant, because the drm is crazy, and im looking forward to a regular ol cd that i can rip onto my ipod and play in my crappy old car stereo.

I can't wait for The Hold Steady's new album. Between that and the Decemberists, I may have to take Oct. 3 off.

  4. Had the DVD for ages but havn't got round to watching it,just popped it in.

Starts with Joey doing a solo All systems red in his kitchen in March 2005, then them writing/rehearsing Bisbee Blue in studio, then a feature on Paul Niehaus the pedal steel guy followed by a bit with John Convertino in studio banging away on his drums.

You then get Joey back in his kitchen doing All Systems red this time in June, the DVD ends with the band playing the song live in December 2005 so you kind of get a sense of how the song progressed over the year.

In between you get little features on the other guys in band and a bit with Joey & John discussing Garden Ruin.

So nothing amazing though the band version of ASR is pretty rocking but the whole package is pretty nice so worth getting if you can find it, I'm always a sucker for these double disc/extra DVD thing even though I hardly ever watch em!

n.b just had a look at the City Slang E card thing and thats pretty much the same footage as DVD though missing a couple of things but nothing major.

    All Systems Red is incredible.

And thanks Wendy for the link!

  5. There's a lot of great break-up/troubled love songs on Bruce Springsteen's "Tunnel of Love."

Especially "Brilliant Disguise" and "One Step Up."

    FANTASTIC breakup songs.

"It's the same thing night on night

    Who's wrong baby who's right

Another fight and I slam the door on

Another battle in our dirty little war

When I look at myself I don't see

The man I wanted to be

Somewhere along the line I slipped off track

I'm caught movin' one step up and two steps back"

  6. How could I forget that one from Wild, Innocent? Hell, even New York City Serenade deserves to be on this list!

    Beat me to it.

Iron & Wine - The Trapeze Swinger

    beautiful beautiful beautiful

    Beat me to it.

  7. So because some dumb-shit radio station overplays Katmandu, Old Time Rock n' Roll or Emmy Lou (all very, very crappy in my opinion), we can't like a handful of truly great songs by Seger?

Who says you can't like Seger?

  8. looks like that shut him up.

No, you posted a full paragraph of wild speculation, then ended it by saying you have no idea what actually happened.

I think that's what Lazy was talking about.

  9. I was wondering if anyone has any idea where I could find the acoustic version of IATTBYH that plays during the opening of the movie. I was disappointed to find out that it's not on the 2-disc DVD. I realize this probably isn't the best place to post this, but I posted it a few days ago in the request forum, and have yet to receive a response. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

  10. If so, toss Wilco in with them. They're the only band I truly like more than the Decemberists. I'm probably one of the few Decmberists fans who likes Picaresque just as much as any other release of theirs.

Well, I'm with you. I love Picaresque.

I can understand how the Decemberists don't click for some people....mainly I think Meloy's voice may grate for some. But I've gotten over that hurdle, much like learning to like Michael Stipe in R.E.M.'s early days.

I like the storytelling. They kind of take me away to weird and/or interesting places. At the Bus Mall is a good example.

On the Bus Mall is epic.

  11. re: pfork news style, i agree, most of the time i'm thinking the same thing as you "just out with the fucking news, i don't care about your stupid personal anticdotes"

i can't wait to see them give the new Arcade Fire a bad review just because the band refused to play their festival last year. :rolleyes

I was really [sarcasm]shocked[/sarcasm] when very critical of Lollapalooza, just a week after their music festival.

  12. Actually, I love pitchfork for the news (though the articles are usually annoying, just get to the fucking point!) and I do read the reviews. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I disagree and it makes me madder than hell, but I'm definitely glad the site exists.

But I understand why people hate it. Sure the new I'm From Barcelona song is a catchy little pop tune, but when they give that single a 5 star review (which they rarely give), I can TOTALLY see why people think the pitchfork folks are pretentious little indie snobs.

  13. Its hard to lists songs, but "God Only Knows" is a fresh choice. Instead of the obvious "Like A Rolling Stone", which is a great song, but already has been honored a million times.

"God Only Knows" is a great song that has perfectly layered orchersteration that whispers into the listener's ear; plus, the lyrics are heart felt and can be used as a great way to romanticze a relationship.

    Amen.

  14. Whys is always the lurkers who come out of the woodworm whenever invites are mentioned? :P

I have one left after giving three away earlier this week. 2 of which it seems, were completely wasted. :realmad

First to PM me gets my last one.

I would like to think I'm the one you didn't waste the invite on.

My oink account is up and running!

  15. Yeah. I don't like Sound Team or Voxtrot, either. To each his own, I guess. I do agree that Tapes N' Tapes is not the best band from your town, however.

That would be The Hold Steady.

Seriously, though, Tapes 'n Tapes is pretty good. Seems like the backlash is hitting pretty hard.
