  1. I pre-ordered the LP form Kung Fu with shipping of $19 to Ireland. Cancelled it and ordered it from Amazon for $6 shipping, $30 in total.

Very disappointing to see Wilco fleece their fans with these various LP/CD/deluxe CD versions, if they're at this game then I really don't care where I get the record from.

  2. So, if Wilco Store is getting blue vinyl and the UK is getting silver, any guesses as to the Solid Sound exclusive color?

There are two colours available from the website, black and blue, so maybe one of those?

I'm going for the silver one!

  3. As mentioned earlier, Flann O'Brien. I think An Beal Bocht/The Poor Mouth is one of his funniest. My partner has a copy illustrated by Ralph Steadman who really understands O'Brien's humour, it's a funny combination but really works.

Yeah Ash are still going, though all on their own. I think they've ditched the album (and label) format and release a song a month to their fans over their site. Not really my cup of tea but I admire them for sticking to what they want.

    Also speaking of northern bands..

    Stiff Little Fingers

    The Undertones

  4. Avoid anything to do with Roddy Doyle and U2/Glen Hansard/The Frames

Theatre; Most works by The Druid Theatre. Also try works by The Gate Theatre.

Music; Kila (mix of traditional and world), The Blades (80s), Sean-nós, Cathy Davey (contemporary), Imelda May (rockabilly), The Chieftains, The Dubliners.

Literature: Sebastian Barry, John McGahern, John Banville, Hugo Hamilton.

    Art; Rasher, Jack Butler Yeats

Film; As GtrPlyr said. The Dead also.

    Poetry; Seamus Heaney

  5. I was having a conversation with a friend on Facebook about Luna and the lyric from "Sideshow by the Seashore" came up:

"You're out all night, chasing girlies

You're late to work, and you go home earlies"

I mean, that is BAD. But he somehow makes it work, in context. Anything that you can think of similar-like?

That's from Track 1 on Penthouse, Chinatown. I love Luna and Dean Wareham had plenty of clunkers that seemed to work ok. I think he did it on purpose really.

Rhyming 'singapore noodles' with 'oodels and oodles' from Renee Is Crying (Romantica) is worse. Also the words from The Owl & The Pussycat on Rendezvous are pretty bad too but the song is OK.

  6. Theremin, you said "Your original point was some silly nonsense about Cline being responsible for the creative decline in Wilco" and I asked you to quote where I said that. You still haven't done that.

I have not mentioned the word 'live' or made a distintion between live and studio albums so I think you're mixing up posts by others.

Keep trying though, you're doing a good job of arguing with yourself.

  7. Lol, nice try but this was not your original point. Your original point was some silly nonsense about Cline being responsible for the creative decline in Wilco, which made no sense whatsoever and just proved you don't know a lot about the members in this band and the music they make.

And this is in no way relevant in this discussion anyway since this thread is about their next album and not their live shows.

Ehh, no it wasn't. In fact it was nothing of the sort. Do you understand plain English? Get back to me and quote where I said that please.

Go back, read the posts and comprehend them this time.

A little more concentration next time.

Well done, you've made yourself look kinda stupid all by yourself.

    You silly, silly boy.

  8.

One of the primary reasons I dislike Cline-Wilco is because I thought Wilco was at its touring peak as a four-piece; so many of their songs benefit from silence, and with 6 playing members its impossible not to overplay on songs.

    This.

I know some folks are so fond of Pat, but he gives the band a bit of visual flair.

    LouieB

Not much use while one is listening to the records.

  9.

To all the people bitching about the last two albums - - would you rather they didn't release them at all? Would you rather have 5 years with no new material?

Yes, I would rather have had two 5/6 track EPs in their place. I would have preferred if they had not released On & On, What Light, You Never Know, You & I, Walken and Everlasting Everything. I'd also prefer a long wait for excellent material than some of the dross offered up in the last five years.

    Is that OK?

  10. I dunno if they did a Zoroastrianism album, I might be intrigued.

That said, I'm not sure I can buy that Wilco will ever make another album equal to their peak. Even AGIB to me is a step below the brilliance of the Jay Bennett era of Wilco, the melodies, the arrangements have gone downhill without Bennett's genius. The lyrics, well, that wouldn't matter if Jay was there or if he wasn't, but I feel like the music quality has gone down a bit without Jay.

Well maybe I might give that Zoroastrian one a listen too, it is one of the more interesting sects even for an agnostic/atheist like myself!

I'm not saying they ain't gonna make another record equal to their peak, I just don't think they're gonna do one soon, especially with this line-up. I respect the Bennet era being your favourite, for me it's YHF-AGIB. I don't necessarily want those records again but I do want to be streched once more, however that is done. I don't care if something is played superbly by a band or not, it's the spirit or passion of it that gets me.

There's so many ideas in those Loose Fur records or even Chelsea Walls, I'd love a little more of this side to Jeff to come out. I'm sure it will when he wants a break from Wilco.

  11. If that were the case with Bob Dylan, people would have missed some good music.

I don't think Wilco's next album will be anything to write home about, but I'm confident that Jeff as a creative force has more to offer the world. If this is the start of his awkward, two-decade love affair with complacency and possibly Christianity, I can hang on if it means a Time Out of Mind or a Love & Theft down the road.

Fair point, I was discussing Wilco and not Jeff. I'd love another Loose Fur or a Tweedy solo album over a new Wilco one at the moment. IMO there's too many members in Wilco and the result can sometimes be very bland. Too many cooks etc... I've said this here before but I much prefer pre-Cline Wilco.

There were so many good songs leftover from the YHF demos, they don't seem to be that prolific anymore. SBS and WTA would have been much better EPs IMO.

There's nothing I'd like more than a return to form and I'm not looking for another YHF/AGIB/ST/BT but I'm not holding my breath. I'll still be buying their records but I don't expect to be blown away anymore. And that's the difference, I used to be really moved by their albums and now I just feel frustrated.

And I draw the line at christianity or any religion for that matter :lol

  12. I bought it off of Amazon from an individual seller...but I will try and contact the record company and see what happens...just for the sake of completion if not nothing else since all the other albums got the cd with it...

    Thanks for the response.. :cheers

No sweat! Looking back on my Amazon account now they re-funded me for the vinyl and 3 song sampler (€18) and charged me for the SBS CD (€13) instead so I was fairly happy with that.

  13. That happened to me too. Think I got my copy from Amazon and I got back to them about it and they sent a CD of the full album (and didn't have to return the 3 song sampler).

Get in touch with the vendor about it, if it stated there was a full CD of the album with the vinyl I'd make sure I got one!

  14. I'd love to see some copies show up in the European store at Wilcoworld. Otherwise it'll cost me over a hundred bucks, including the immensive shipping costs from the US store..

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon.com where the shipping is about $7 compared to Kung Fu's usual rip off shipping charges of over $30 to Europe.

The total was $78 or about €57 I think.

  15. It seems they had a little trouble last night as I couldn't get tickets but tried again this morning and it was no hassle. A real pleasure to get a Wilco ticket for £25/€27.50, last time in Vicar Street it was near €50 I think.

Looks like it's the only Irish show this year as well. Haven't been to Belfast in ages so looking forward to it. Looks like a good festival in nice surroundings!

    Thanks Dick!
