I loved Acuff Rose as well and it was defnitely the highlight.
Also was really, really, psyched to hear Through My Window Sad and Lonely.
In absolutely love that tune and thought I might not ever hear it performed live as Wilco does not play it too often. Thought it was pretty well played considering they probably don't play it together all too often.
Pieholden was also a nice surprise, and I love Mountain Bed in any form.
Not a big fan of Impossible Germany solo acoustic. The only reason to hear that song is Nel's solo and obviously that was absent. Tweedy made a funny comment that "I thought about whistling Nel's guitar solo, but we don't have all night".
Was pleasantly surprised at how quiet and polite the crowd was -- there were a few "sshhh" -ers that were a little over the top IMHO. Some people take it a little far and become as much of a distraction as the idiots who are talking.
Just my .02

Wilco (the song) would have been a good extra in the same vein as Thanks I Get with SBS.
I agree on Wilco (the song) -- just doesn't seem to fit to me.
Album is okay as far as Wilco goes -- which makes it better than 95% of other records out there. Outside of a few songs it just doesn't beg me to listen to it over and over.
Country Disappeared/One Wing/Deeper Down are my faves.
You Never Know = my least favorite Wilco song. Seeing it live didn't help -- actually it made me hate it more.

Hold out your hand,
there's so much we don't understand
Country Disappeared is full of great Tweedy lyrics:
When the cold night shakes you like a chandelier
The snowflakes break through the atmosphere,
and melt on the blue breath of the auctioneers and disappear.
-
I liked the song
Me too.
The only recent tv appearance that I enjoyed.
-
Country Dissappeared has really grown on me...its very John Lennon-esque.
After One Wing and Deeper Down probably my next favorite on the album. Great example of sparse but beautiful playing by the rhythym section on the studio cut.
The funny thing is I could not stand it the first few times I listened to it. The phrasing of the lyrics on the verses is very interesting as well.

It can always be assumed Wilco will play

I have heard these at every single show I have seen of theres since these songs came out...they need a good core setlist shake up...
Here is what an ideal setlist last night would have looked like to me!
Wilco (the song)
Box Full
Too Far Apart
At Least That's What You Said
Bull Black Nova
Either Way
One Wing
Wishful Thinking
Deeper Down
Say You Miss Me
Pot Kettle
Sonny Feeling
Summerteeth
ELT
Nothingsever
Shouldn't Be Ashamed
Outta Site
Poor Places
1st Encore:
Blue Eyed Soul
You And I@
Feed of Man
You Never Know*
Misunderstood
County Dissapeared
2nd Encore:
I'll Fight
On and On
Hoodoo Voodoo*
I mentioned a similar point in the Wolftrap thread. The band plays to many shows and has way to much material to draw from to have the setlists be so stale and predictable. It would also make the regulars much more fun when they did play them.

Last night, Jeff let me play his guitar from the stage. He walked to the front of the stage, handed me his purple guitar pick, and we played Spiders together.
He played the notes, and I picked/strummed.
It was one of the greatest nights of my life.
That was awesome -- a buddy and I were about 20 rows back on Nels side and we both made that comment that the guy in the front row that Jeff let strum the guitar was doing a helluva a job!

They cut Late Greats, Hoodoo and Everlasting Everything. A shame, too, because I've never heard Hoodoo (or much Mermaid stuff in my five or so shows) and I know they haven't played Everlasting much, so that would have been great!
Other than the new songs I think I'd heard everything before at one show or another, so while the setlist was kind of generic I can't ever complain about a Wilco show. I definitely had a good time and the guys did seem to be into it.
Also, I had never been to Wolf Trap before and it's a nice venue. I'll have to catch another show there sometime.
I agree on the setlist being generic. This is the major complaint I have with Wilco in general. I have seen them 6 or 7 times and I am getting a little tired of seeing many of the same songs over and over. Their catalog is big enough and they tour enough that I think they can provide some more variety. There are some great, great tunes that are not in the rotation enough and I wonder why they feel inclined to play some of the same songs at every show(even though they are great--spreading them out a little bit would make it more exciting)
That being said they put on a very enjoyable show.
As far as the new material -- seeing You Never Know live doesn't change my opinion -- it was easily my least favorite song of the show. On the other hand, One Wing and Deeper Down(really nice performance) were both terrific.
And a little comment concerning Wolftrap -- a great place to see a show. My rule of thumb though is if I really like a band I always get tickets in the pavillion area -- much better sound and the crowd(except the the issue of the season ticket holders who sometimes just show up for everything) is usually much more engaged. The lawn area is better if I think the act is okay and just want to hang out and picnic on the long and carry in my own food and alcohol.

One week later and I still cant find one good thing to say about this album.
Really? Not even one song? A passage in one song? A lick here or there? I assume this is exaggeration.
-
Haven't really listened to the album enough to give it my final judgement, but I will say that the album is much better produced that SBS. There are a lot of interesting things I pick up with each listen.
One Wing, Deeper Down, Bull Black Nova are obvious standouts.
Last few listens have been loving the understated piano and guitar rhythym section on Country Disappeared--the chord progression on that song is beautiful.
Also -- there is a real nice interplay btw, Tweedy and Nels on I'll Fight around 3:15 with he lead in to the final verse -- frickin' love that.
Overall I think there are more little nuances to pick up on this album. SBS was immediately accessable, but I got sick of it after about a month. Jury is still out on this one.

WOW. I have not listened to any of the new album. I have kept myself from it so as not to burn out and really enjoy the "release date" like I once did years ago. Now I'm not sure how to take this.......Is this song a highlight on the new record? I'm sorry but it really does sound like they don't care anymore.
They looked great and sound tight ass hell but I think the song has a Linda Ronstadt feel.
Only listened to the album a few times but personally it is my least favorite song on the album. "You Never Know" is just boring to me--maybe it will grow on me but I doubt it.

This lineup is walking a very fine line between keeping the focus on the songs vs. focus on muscianship. I tend to loathe amazing technical musicians, so having Nels in my favorite band is a bit hard for me, hell Glenn for that matter. However as long as Tweedy is ther ringleader, I think we will always get more emotion than technique.
That being said, the beginning of Ashes with the Ashes soundcheck shows how great this current lineup can be. That is just beautiful. Unfortunately, their version of Kingpin shows us the oppositte.
Agree wholeheartedly. The two soundchecks (Ashes and Wishful Thinking) are spectacular. Most of the rest is just -- ehhh.

Thanks for posting Analogman -- really enjoyed reading that.

I don't care what it is called. Just as long as music comes out of the speakers when I put the CD in the CD player.
Good point. Couldn't agree more.
1 ticket for MPP - standing room in front of the stage!

For anyone considering these tickets -- the GA pit at MPP is a GREAT location to see a show.
If you want to move up you can get very close to the band and if you want there is space in the back of the GA section to move around and see the band from different viewpoints.
