  1. Dylan at Outlaw Fest last night was incredible. Debut of Ricky Nelson's Garden Party, with Dylan singing lyrics that reference himself. And the whole concert was the thrilling chaos of a band on the verge of falling apart, and usually holding it together. Haven't had that feeling since 1995. IYKYK.

I caught an Outlaw show when it passed through Tinley Park last summer. Decent show. I was on the lawn, so the sound was pretty crappy. Was one of the more interesting setlist that I saw him play. It was nice seeing Jim Keltner play drums.

    Stella Blue was a treat.

I also think the Rough and Rowdy Ways tunes work real well in a live setting, also.

    Bob Dylan - piano, harp
Tony Garnier - electric and standup bass
    Jim Keltner - drums
Bob Britt - acoustic guitar, electric guitar
Doug Lancio - acoustic guitar, electric guitar

Yeah Keltner on drums is great. Nice to see another 80 year old up there with Bob. Dylan has changed drummers a few times since George left, hope he sticks with Keltner for some stability going forward. But I'm sure Keltner has lots of options and will only do it as long as he wants to.

  3. I saw Dylan in 2023 after taking about a 15 year break from seeing him. I'm in the camp of not being a fan of his current arrangements and phrasing on older songs, and after that show still feel the same. But Rough and Rowdy Ways is incredible, and those songs really suit his current sound. The new material really blew me away. Going to catch him again at the Outlaw Tour in May, and know that it was more of a mix of newer and older stuff on the last Outlaw tour, but amazing to see him still mixing it up to such an extent.

  4. I don't care for the music of Dead and Co. But I imagine the video/lights in the sphere will be wild. Hoping they go with more classic imagery and psychedelia rather than the neo-hippie corporate cosplay they've turned the Dead's legacy into. Like, 360 degree Joshua Light Show, rather than dancing bears walking across the screen.

I'm going to 1 phish show. Mixed feelings about how it will be musically, dreading a lot of newer material. But the spectacle should be something, they do like to go big.

Listening to the 12/31/73 Allman's show now --- glad people stopped lighting off firecrackers at shows. That would have drove me nuts.

The Lost Live Dead had a great post on this New Year's Show.

My take on why they never played together again after this date is probably due to the Dead's hiatus after 74 and drugs.

Probably lines up with Jerry calling Gregg a narc, which Gregg never got over. So yes, drugs.

  6. Must be annoying at times to hate the Dead, as their presence is ubiquitous throughout all aspects of American music. Knowningly, unknowingly, directly, indirectly, positive and negative, you can't avoid them. As the saying goes, we are everywhere. Don't worry haters, you are the normal ones, we are very weird. Carry on, and enjoy your audience recordings, or selections from Wilco's archive (you know who started both practices).

  7. A few deep thoughts from last nights show:

Haven't seen the band since they last played SD over 10 years ago. While they have frequented LA many times in the ensuing years, they've always been there on school nights, and given the band's dad rock leanings, that's just not an option. Also, one of the 10 largest cities in the US is not a suburb of LA. Hopefully I won't have to wait another 10.

The older songs played are certainly among their best, and I would be happy to hear at any show - Handshake, War, Via, Hummingbird, Jesus, Impossible, CA, AiL, HMD, Spiders - wow!

Nels solo in Impossible Germany was over 4 minutes long, and while this version was not quite as incediary as I remember past takes being, it was fun none the less. Jeff's riffage on Spiders was really great too.

The newer songs are a bit better live than on the albums, but lack the dynamics of the older stuff, and really there are just other songs I'd rather hear. Except for Many Worlds. That is the one masterpiece on the new album. The jam coda is great, featuring Pat's leads and duels with Nels, kind of Morning Dew-esque, but why not just play the whole song?

US Blues is pretty much the perfect cover song for this tour, moment - thematically and musically fitting in with the rest of the Cruel Country material. A bit reminscent of Hoodoo Voodoo and some other stuff in their catalogue as well. I actually don't even have it ranked in the top 100 Grateful Dead songs. May have to move it up a few spots.

    Late Greats was not played.

    That's all I got.

  8. The return of Dark California Stars seems on deck. Ripple, St. Steve, maybe some Dylan, Band tunes. I'm sure Nels is game for anything. But Jeff singing Brokedown Palace would be nice. Other possibilities: China Doll, Ship of Fools, It Must've Been the Roses, To Lay Me Down, Cosmic Charlie.

  9. A lot of understandable anxiety after the recent Dead & Co debacle. One would hope the promoters and bands would take extra steps to ensure that doesn't happen again with other festivals (band members and staff infections resulting in the fest being cancelled). Of course, impossible to control COVID.

I will just speak as someone who returned from a resort vacation in Mexico one week ago. There really is very little concern about catching COVID there. Outside most of the time. When inside, all staff are masked, and guests are encouraged to mask. The resorts are very motivated to avoid COVID issues so seem to take good precautions. Yes there is a slim chance of catching it in Mexico and being stuck there. But just take this for what it is - even if you catch it, it is Mexico, and for a variety of reasons, you probably will not get a positive test and will be able to return to the US.

Unless I absolutely could not be stuck in Mexico for a few extra days, I would go. As people return from the Dead and Co cancelled fest this coming week, wait and hear for any stories of people testing positive and being stuck there before you throw in the towel.

  10. Huge Beatles fan, but found this doc to be really tedious. Some interesting moments throughout, interactions between band members, and insights into what lead to their end. But this could've been a 3 hour feature, and then save the rest for bonus scenes or directors cut or whatever. I don't think I ever need to listen to the song Get Back again. How about instead of showing them playing 15 seconds of a hundred different songs, you show them play a few songs the whole way through? I guess I've heard all or most of the audio from these sessions, so nothing really surprising there. Sorry, a lot of people buying into the hype of Peter Jackson plus the Beatles, but this just didn't deliver. Watched once, will never watch again. Except for the Ringo fart scene, that was funny.

Jonah is a good choice, but not sure how they'll handle the singing and guitar playing - dub in Jon Mayer? Not a fan of rock biopics, but Scorcese did some interesting things with the recent fictionalized Rolling Thunder revue doc. Not sure this is a movie that needs to be made or will be able to capture the depth and breadth of man or the band, but hope its worth a watch.
