  1. Nice to have met you last night Firecracker! Yes indeed all I can add to that is another WOW. One of the musical highlights of my life witnessing that.

For anyone wondering how Jeff got John Paul Jones up there, he's known Peter Buck (who runs this festival) ever since he arranged strings for R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People. They've remained friends and JPJ has been seen at various shows with Peter over the years, and was here in Todos Santos in 2014. I saw Jeff and family and John Paul Jones and his wife at a cafe in Todos Santos yesterday morning, eating separately, and by the time I left they hadn't talked at all. So I'm not sure if they just met at the cafe and Jeff asked John there, or if it had been a planned meeting there to discuss. At the show last night Jeff said that he told John that he ripped off his riff in 'World Away' to which John agreed, which was pretty funny.

JPJ also nailed the mandolin on Airline to Heaven. The guy really is one of the biggest legends in music history. I have video of it and it will be on Youtube soon. JPJ also played keys with 'Filthy Friends' (Peter Buck and Corin Tucker's new collaboration) on 2 songs, including Bowie's Jean Jeanie.

Spencer was fantastic on drums too, and filled in admirably for Glenn during the 'Wilco lite' portion of the set, which absolutely rocked! Pat got to let loose with the solos that Nels may have done otherwise.

Again I'm just going to finish with the only word I can describe the magic of the night: WOW!!!

And here's video of the finale I captured with my camera last night https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlSulc7yhfo

  2. I hope I wasn't included in part of your jackassery assessment! I was having a great time singing along. That was a pretty typical Todos Santos crowd, loud and wanting to drink, it's a part of festivals when you're not who everyone is there to see unfortunately. The Thanks I Get was requested by me through the website, and I was certainly doing the 'We can make it better' part. I also requested Give Back The Key To My Heart, so i'm taking that as 4/4 now from 2 nights. Now if we get Spiders tomorrow night I'll be 5/5.

I got the written setlist, I'm The Man Who Loves You was on it after Shot in the arm, but wasn't played. Jeff didn't have one at all last night and only glanced at this one a few times. Can't wait to see what treats we get tomorrow night.

  3. Todos Santos is still beautiful, but it's changing rapidly - gentrification is making its way up from Cabo (wait till you see the paved streets), so get here while you can still see it before it becomes mobbed with tourists!

Did you get VIP reserved or normal reserved? It's a pretty small area, I had VIP so I sat at the table until Old 97's, then went down the front for them and Jeff. VIP gives you a great view but normal reserved is a little restricted (and you'll be at the back with the talkers), so if you want to see any band close up I'd recommend going up to the stage. It's quite high so you'll see fine.

And here's California Stars from last night

  4. Good report don't think there's too much else to add to that, other than that it was really chilly! Jeff's comment about being here for 2 more nights and having to be nice was after I Must Be High, when at the end of the song he said he figured out how to play the solo better after the song was over, which he played. I then said that he could play it again tomorrow night, which then prompted that comment about having to be nice. I think Jeff relaxed more after the reverb issues when we all reassured him it sounded fine, and he apologised for being a perfectionist.

If you see me tonight say hello, if it's cold tonight as last night I'll be wearing my Wilco hoodie again (and I'm about 6'4 and wear glasses if that helps). I'm going to be at Hotel California this afternoon for the soundcheck and will try and ask Jeff there what the song was if I can chat to him.

  5. Will post more later, for now here's Jeff's setlist tonight:

    Misunderstood

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

    Unknown

    New Madrid

    Please Tell My Brother

    Born Alone

    Hummingbird

    I Must Be High

    Passenger Side

    Hesitating Beauty

    Simple Twist of Fate

California Stars (with John, Pat, Peter Buck, Spencer, Mike Mills, Scott McCaughey, Josh Kantor, Joseph Arthur, and some more I'm probably forgetting).

All songs were solo except the last one.

The unknown song included the lyrics ''before I could drive before I could vote... always afraid of those normal american kids', any ideas anyone what it was?

Fantastic set, Jeff was in a great mood (and when he asked what we wanted to hear my requests for Hummingbird and Passenger Side were played! I Must Be High was also a request).

  6. Yes I'm down here in Todos Santos, my friend Chris saw him, Sue and Spencer at the airport in Los Cabos yesterday. Will post a full report for sure - for complete coverage check out the R.E.M. Timeline facebook page as Chris and I will be providing full coverage of the festival there

  7. I am seriously considering making the trek to this. Can you explain to me the set up? I was confused with the tickets and which ones will give me the best spot. Also how long will Jeff play? Does everyone play together or is it a bunch of short sets?

    Thanks!

All the reserved tickets are gone, but there weren't many to begin with. All they provide you is a seat in an elevated spot at the back of the venue. The only tickets available now are general admission, available for purchase on the night only, which are what most of the tickets are. Hotel California is a pretty small venue (my guess is 500 people max), so general admission will get you very close to the stage regardless of where you stand. I wouldn't worry about ticket availability despite it being a small venue, if you arrive when doors open you will get in.

I can't answer how long Jeff will play for, but my guess is 1 hour for each of the 3 nights of the first week. The way this years worked was there was a 1 hour set to kick off the night with Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn, Kevn Kinney, Joseph Arthur and Chuck Prophet all performing short sets (they rotated across the 3 nights, but Peter, Scott and Steve were constants). Night 1 then featured Old 97's, Autumn Defense and Jayhawks each playing 1 hour sets, with the night wrapping up around midnight. Night 2 and 3 featured Jayhawks and Old 97s again, along with another band called La Santa Cecilia closing the night (night 3 ended around 1am).

I would presume 2016's festival will follow a similar format. They haven't announced the playing schedule yet, but it'll probably follow a similar path where Peter and his crew play a set to start the night, then in no particular order there'll be Frankie, Filthy Friends (Peter Buck and Corin Tucker), Autumn Defense, Jeff and Old 97's. It'll be 3 long nights of music!

I can't recommend attending highly enough. It's an extremely relaxed festival, with performers easily accessible (tip - the soundcheck is in the afternoon, free to get into, and you can chat to all the performers and get things signed), and guaranteed to generate some great performances. I'd expect Jeff to play some tunes with John and Pat (last year Pat stayed for all 3 nights and played with Jayhawks and Joseph Arthur, while John left after night 1), probably play the song he sang on Peter's new album, and highly likely we'll see some all star jams. It's that kind of loose relaxed festival.

Todos Santos is also an incredibly cool town, full of great restaurants and art galleries. It's probably the best festival I've ever attended. But shhh don't let that get out or it'll get too big!

In summary: get there if you can you won't regret it! Message me if you'd like anymore details

  8. it was rejected last time. but they did play it when i requested it in 2008. i put down for Airline this time. can you do multiple requests?. the site wont let me do another for Acuff-Rose!

Pretty sure I requested multiple songs in Melbourne last time, though I might have done different songs on different nights. One for Melbourne one for Meeniyan? (assume you're doing both). I requested Airline last tour in Wellington, when i saw Jeff at Wellington airport I told him I'd requested it but didn't get played. He then did put it on the setlist for Auckland that night, but in the 2nd encore which they decided not to do!

So yeah, think I'll join your request for Airline :)

  9. well, they've been here in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, so we're due for another small stint. the solo jeff part i'm looking forward to :) plus, our usual crowd from VC seem to have front or 2nd row seats - that'll give the Tweedster some flashbacks from the last few tours cause he remembers our faces somehow :lol

Didn't your request for When You Wake Up Feeling Old (I think that was it) get rejected by Jeff last time because they didn't feel like playing it? Maybe this time!

  10. So excited, just bought my Tweedy tickets for Auckland!

What do you think, any chance Wilco might come down at the same time? They have a gap in their schedule.... And it's been a while...

Can't see it happening unfortunately. The Tweedy tour schedule is very tight with very few days off between first show at Meeniyan and last show in Japan. It doesn't really make sense for Jeff to tour Australia, NZ and Japan then fly back to Australia for a Wilco tour and start again. With Wilco in Europe in November, start hoping for a Wilco 2017 tour down here!

  11. Sweet!!!

heeheee, i got front row, seat 8 for melbourne :rock

I got 3rd row middle, decided to be a few rows back to soak in the entire view. I find at Recital Centre front row gives you a sore neck from looking up :)

  12. Australia dates for Tweedy:

    Meeniyan town hall mar 20

    Melbourne recital hall mar 21

    Sydney the factory mar 22

Very very confused by Meeniyan. There's not much there, it's a small country town.

Meeniyan is a popular place for Love Police to bring their touring artists. You're right it's a very small town, but with a very passionate community who use the event as a place to catch up with Bob the butcher and Fred the farmer and discuss the local gossip. Basically as a result, shows at Meeniyan always sell out regardless of who's playing. I went to a show there a few years back and it was a fun night, but I've noticed the "city folk" tend to get relegated to tables at the back. Not sure how to secure tickets though, you have to send an email to a hotmail address?!

Also don't forget there's a show in Auckland on March 27.

  13. Bit of a surprise but Jeff sings the final track on Peter Buck's new album 'Warzone Earth', the song is called 'World Spins Around You'. It's only available on vinyl via mail order and independent record stores, cos that's how Mr Buck rolls these days. Great song too!

I can see this one getting played at Todos Santos Music Festival in January

  14. This was shared with a "custom" audience on Wilco's facebook page, so it might just be visible to Aussies right now, but Tweedy has been announced for the Bluesfest in Byron Bay next Easter, Maybe Spencer is on spring break?

No doubt there will be sideshows in at least Sydney and Melbourne as well, so any Americans wanting an excuse for an Australian holiday this is it! Our dollar is doing badly against the $US now so it's a great time to come for a vacation.

  15. Not so fast to the title my friend. WHERE in melbourne? Because I too am a melbournian who has done the solid sound journey. Guess we can call it a tie? ;)

I've also seen them in Norway, Finland, Swedon and NZ. Hey when they don't come to you very often you make the effort to go them. Ahhh those were there days. Now I have kids and I will be lucky to make the melbourne shows! Last tour I flew to Sydney with my then 1yo and pregnant with #2. Flying back the next day after the concert I blacked out on the plane and woke up with an oxygen mask on and my daughter no where to be seen (soon found an aisle behind). Despite that experience I will still try for more than the melbourne shows next time.

    You will love it :)

I'm in Elsternwick, so if you're further west then you win :) I can only lay claim to seeing them in NZ outside of Australia to this point, so you win the total number of km travelled :) Really can't wait!!
