  1. As a Mets fan, I remember reading that story 4 or 5 times the week it came out, shaking my head and drooling in anticipation of what was to come. Of course, the April Fools aspect didn't even enter my mind. Just another great story by Plimpton.

Of course, we practically had our Sidd Finch in the form of young Dwight Gooden in that magical year of 1985. 24-4, 1.53 era. Magic.

  2. Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me / What's Going On (2 of the most beautiful tracks to ever grace a record)

Make it all of side 1 of the What's Going On LP!

There's a track on the deluxe anniversary edition of What's Going On that underscores just how exquisite this recording is, an alternate mix of "What's going On"... There is no lead vocal, and it starts simply with James Jamerson's bass and the sax riff by Eli Fountain (famously done as a warm-up which Marvin kept), and then slowly adds vibes, piano, Eddie "Bongo" Brown's bongos, strings, drums, and backing vocals. The melodies that interplay among the different instruments (mostly shielded by Marvin's brilliant vocal take) are on full display. It is absolutely stirring.

  3. What's the deal with ATL and WAS playing each other last night and then starting different series'?

yeah I didn't get that either... found it an ounce confusing

Oh, and baseball in hi-def is GLORIOUS.

  4. 4 shirtless Fans in the bleachers had "F" "U" "K" "U" in red white & blue on their chests... good laugh. Braun is the real deal for sure... and Alex Gordon had a nice day for the Royals as well.

And my tickets for the last-ever Baseball Hall of Fame Game (Cubs/Padres day after fathers' day, Doubleday Field, Cooperstown NY) arrived today to boot!

Lord how I love this game...

Just saying, 3 years ago Mets games weren't like this. Most of them were Yankees fans 3 years ago.

yeah, but you know as well as I how it is. The fair-weather folks inevitably come out. Believe me, it was a helluva lot easier (& cheaper) to get a ticket for a game @ shea 3 years ago. The fair-weather fucks make it tough.

  5. I am not a fan of the Mets.

I just wish their idiot south florida bandwagon fans would go back to New York if they love the Mets so much. Every single Mets fan there has either a Reyes, Wright, or Santana jersey. Cool.

Every native New Yorker I know has an immediate relative living in Florida nowadays... that's just the way it is, bobbob... you really didn't expect to see any Endy Chavez or Brian Schneider jerseys, did you? There probably aren't many Rick VandenHurk or Taylor Tankersley jerseys bouncing around Dolphins Stadium either.

  6. Gotta say go with a Squier, definitely try to play it through an amp or two first (and not buy one in a box like they sell them sometimes)... if you can spring an extra $80 or so, they make a squier version of the Telecaster Thinline that I couldn't help but pick up, and it felt and sounded rather nice. It seemed like one of those Squiers where if you replace the volume/tone pots and the output jack (and eventually the pickups if you really like the feel of the guitar), and throw a bit of that copper shielding into it, you've practically got yourself a Fender.

  7. Has anyone mentioned:

"Black Superman - 'Muhammad Ali'" - Johnny Wakelin & The Kinshasa Band

    ?

LOVED this song when I was a kid...

how 'bout "heartbeat (it's a love beat)" by the deFranco Family?

or "Billy Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson & the Haywoods?
