  1. I watch very, very little TV. I'm also not a late night person. So, between cooking, cleaning (usually just the kitchen...I don't put much effort into cleaning other rooms), taking the dog for a long walk, arguing ("talking") with the kids (all teenagers +), or just talking with my wife, I don't have a lot of do-nothing time after work and before I go to bed. When I do sit down, I usually pick up a book.

  2. Recently finished: John Adams by David McCullough. A great book. McCullough really ties the people and events together into a spellbinding read.

Now reading: Treasure Island by Bob L. Stevenson. Was looking for an easy to read adventure. Only problem is that, in my mind all the characters look like the Muppets.

Currently not reading again; Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner. This book has been sitting on my shelf for a number of years, but I can't get passed the first page; maybe the first paragraph. I've never read any Faulkner; anybody have any insight? Is it worth the effort?

And where do all of you find the URL's for the book covers? I pull up a book in Amazon, for example, but I can't get that URL to link here. Says it's not supported, or something like that. I saw the post earlier about how to attache the link here, but I can't figure out where to get the URL's themselves...

  3. Makes me think "I was gonna start a thread...."

About 6 weeks or so ago, I stuck in On Every Street after not listening to it for awhile. It stayed in my player for a month or so. I remember thinking "I should start a thread on VC; I don't read much about Dire Straits".

Used to crank up "Twistin by the Pool" and "Industrial Disease" in college. Like some have mentioned, I got burned out on Brothers in Arms due to the constant air play of some of those songs. But their first album, Making Movies, Love Over Gold...very good. I'm not much of a fan of overly-long songs, but Telegraph Road alway kept my attention for its full length. It's been so long since I've heard it though, that I can't remember why. I tried to dig them up after my On Every Street resurrection, but can't find any of my Dire Straits discs....rats!

I will say that my wife and I were long-distance dating when Brothers in Arms came out. So "So Far Away" has a special meaning there. Romeo and Juliet, too. Oh, also, early that summer before Brothers in Arms came out, I was working 1/2 days cleaning college dorm rooms. My work day started by meeting the rest of the crew in a break room while they finished their lunch. One day MTV was on and I remember the vj talking about this new Dire Straits album coming out and saying that it featured a song with Sting singing "I want my MTV...". I remember thinking "that sounds really stupid...".

  4. I try to give up beer during Lent. Well, alcohol in general, but beer makes up about 99.9% of my consumption. I have more will power in some years than in others. This year I'm determined to be strong (easy to say with still a few days before Ash Wednesday). Easter is always such a l l l o o o o n n n g g g g time away....

  5. The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan.

Sorry, can't figure out how you guys post pictures of the cover...

Really good. If you like history and what it was like to deal with this catastrophe (the dust bowl). I'm about half way through.

By the way, checking out this thread over the past few months or so has gotten me back into reading some, which I used to enjoy a bunch but had gotten out of the habit. So...Thanks VC!

Besides this one, I have two or three other books that I'm at various stages of reading. I'd forgotten how much I like having a few titles going at once. I don't usually read for long spells at a time, but there's always something around, depending on what my mood is.

  6. So I walk into my Dad's house this past Saturday morning, oh, maybe 10am-ish. He's there by himself and, as usual, has his radio on in the kitchen. And, as usual, it's on at a kinda-sorta high volume. So I walk into the kitchen where Dad is slicing up bell peppers to put into canning jars. He's slicing up these peppers and the radio is playing on the not-quite-loud-but-on-the-upper-end-of-normal volume and what do I hear? Dad's slicing peppers and the radio is playing and the song is "I Can't Stand It". So, not only is that strange by itself, a Wilco song coming from a radio station that Dad's got on, but it's not even a new song from WTA, which, I think, would be a couple of levels below the strangeness that I was thinking. Instead, "I Can't Stand It" is playing. A little background; my Dad has never been into music; pretty much couldn't care less. He keeps the radio playing just so the house isn't quite so lonely since he's there by himself most of the time. The station he keeps on is one of only a few that can be picked up clearly from his house and is an "Oldies" station; mostly 60's and 70's hits. As you can imagine, not a lot of variety. But not being a music fan, Dad just wants the noise and news/weather updates. So there's Dad slicing up peppers with seeds and pepper parts all around him and he's listening to Wilco.

So he stops slicing his peppers after I didn't say anything for a few seconds. I was just staring at the radio not saying anything, trying to decide if this was really real or if The Twilight Zone had somehow descended upon me. And so, after he stops slicing the peppers so he wouldn't chop off the end of his finger when he looked up at me, he says "what's the matter?". For a brief second, I kinda thought he was just kidding with the "what's the matter" line and would smile and wink and say something like "You're right, Fif...Wilco kicks ass!" But he didn't, he just looked at me like he really thought something was the matter and not like I was surprised that he was listening to Wilco while cutting peppers in the kitchen and knew that he was listening to Wilco. So I said "what station is this?" You know, like maybe someone had started up a radio station that actually plays music that I would want to hear on a regular basis AND said station was able to come in with a strong, clear signal here in rural Indiana. My heart skipped a beat as I asked the question, hoping for a response that would justify the anticipation. Instead, Dad just said..."I dunno....same station I always listen to. Why?".

So that's when the whole moment was shattered. Jeesh. About the time he said that, the lame announcer dude came back on and started going through all the Friday night high school football scores again, as if anyone at that point really cared. Not just going through the scores, but commenting on the games. He blabbed on for a few minutes, then broke to a commercial. The commercial droned on about Pioneer seed corn or the "most powerful Kubota ever built" (like stronger than a push-lawnmower really means "most powerful"), or some damned thing or another, then "I Can't Stand It" came back on again. So, there ya go. The station is using "I Can't Stand It" for filler between seed corn commercials and the latest 47 to zero football game commentary.

So to answer Dad's "why?" question, I, probably with too much excitement in my voice given the actual reasoning behind the song, said "that's a Wilco song!".

Dad said "oh" and went back to slicing peppers.

    *sigh*

  7. I tried to watch Scarface once on TV. The whole movie was: "Thank you! No, thank you!"

Much more polite than I remembered.

Wait...so its Al Pacino doing the calling in BBN? And he's screaming "Thank you" instead of "Pick up!"???

Man, I was way off the mark....

  8. So I read on here that Jeff said Bull Black Nova is about a guy who just killed his girlfriend, right? If that's what the song is supposed to be about, then who do you think he's calling at the end? Who is he trying to get to "Pick up! Pick up!"? The police? Doesn't seem like it since earlier he says "They're coming up the shoulders. What have they found? I wonder if they know". Seems like that's the police he's talking about. Maybe a friend or something, since he can't think and can't calm down? I guess my first thought was that he's calling the girlfriend hoping that she'll pick up and he'll come to his senses and find that the murder was just a nightmare or something. I dunno; what do you guys think?

  9. If you're trying to get the DVD tracks, I would try disregarding the physical DVD and just try to make an account at wilcoworld.net. That's what I did and I have since downloaded the tracks twice (home and work) and neither time did I have my DVD in the computer.

    Here is the link: http://smartley3.wilcoworld.net/roadcase/members/

Note: This may be a beta page since I haven't seen a link to this page anywhere. So remove the link if it's not ok.

    Huh, I'll be damned...that worked.

Thanks. I'm not sure where I missed this part of the instructions, but thanks for getting me on track.

  10. I'm still getting the "sorry for the inconvenience" screen when trying to get the bonus tracks. I was able to download the DC show, but not the 20 songs from the dvd since it won't let me register. Is this just me? I've been trying since Sunday morning with no luck.

  11. Were the extras only supposed to be downloadable for a limited period of time? I thought I might have read that somewhere, but I could be wrong...

I thought they were supposed to be available through 4/27. So why they're not available today is driving me nuts! Anyone have any ideas?

  12. Regarding "Voodoo": I saw them play this in Indy last summer and my thought then was "Pat should NEVER try to duel Nels, Nels just wipes the floor with him" - but last night Pat held his own during the duel. Well done, Mr. Sansone. :thumbup

It looked like Pat was trying to come all the way across the stage to get in Nels' face, except his guitar cord wouldn't reach that far.

  13. My brother and I definitely had a fun time at a great show. I agree that early-on they seemed kind of flat or subdued or...something. The encores really made up for it though. I am puzzled at the lack of new songs or some kind of change up. I don't see Wilco enough to be tired of hearing anything live (last night was my 4th show), so not a complaint, just wondering why they're holding back. We stuck around after the show and saw Pat (someone was nice enough to take our picture for us), John, and Glen, but I don't have much (any) conversation abilities around these guys, so didn't think to ask any intelligent questions.
