  1. Your avatar worked with an actor who worked with this actor in a different movie, but same year. (Edit: Technically it's not the year of wide release for the above mentioned film, but the limited release which was the year prior.)

    :ninja

Ok, I think you have just broken my brain. I am going to have some more beer and try not to think about this, at the risk of going crazy.......

  2. Good Will Hunting?

I think that might be right. I know it's in a movie I have seen recently.

I collect dysfunctional relationships with women, apparently. Yup, it's the truth. I am writing the best songs I have ever written now though, so that is some good consolation......

  3. The National

Ok, alot of people whose opinions I really respect love their new album. I know some of their older stuff and I could tolerate it, a couple of songs I liked. So, on that note, I listened to High Violet today. Their performance of the song "Runaway" showed up in one of my YouTube searches, I watched and listened, and I was floored. I am in love with this album!

Therefore, I rescind my vote for The National.

  4. The song that came on was nothingsevergonnastandinmyway (again). I know the current band kicks ass, but something about the wonderful little fills that come at the end of lines and between verses in a song like this (and the others on ST) are Jay's lasting influence on even this band (who has to try and reproduce those things). Sure, the band now has great musicians and a great live sound.

Meanwhile Wilco is now a big draw that travels the world to critical aclaim (and rarely even plays the midwest any more.) Jay's ongoing contribution can't be minimized by anyone. Both Mikael and Pat have become really fine keyboard players and Nels is of course an incredible guitarist. But Jay's sonic invention was amazing. His staying in the band wasn't to be, but everytime the songs are played from his era, Jay becomes part of the band again.

    LouieB

Very well put Lou. I was thinking about the scene in "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" a couple of days ago, where Jeff and Jay are playing Car's Can't Escape. Just a beautiful, touching scene. Two great musicians doing what they do best.

  5. Disappointed in Boston... how do you blow a 3-0 series lead AND a 3-0 lead in game 7. That's fucking crazy. It was almost like they didn't want to win. A Habs vs Bruins eastern final would have been epic... maybe next year.

Yeah, that is just..... stunning. Seeing Recchi after the game complaining about the too many men call made me laugh. I mean, c'mon! You lose 4 straight, and blow a 3-0 in a game 7. You have no one to blame but yourselves.

  6. I hardly ever read, but just recently caught the book bug and I've compiled a short list of books that sounded interesting.

    Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut

I just finished that, and I loved it. It was not at all like I expected it to be, and a very entertaining read!

  7. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is one of the great American movies in recent memory, I think. I actually just finished teaching the movie in a high school course called Film as Social Criticism; we studied it in terms of allegory and what it says about our modern cult of celebrity.

I have been on the fence about seeing this movie, but due to some great reviews by people whose opinions I respect, I will hopefully check it out this weekend. I have been in the mood for a good western lately anyway.

On a sidenote, a friend of mine could have been a extra in this movie when they were filming in Winnipeg but he ended up not going. I still give him a hard time about that, haha.

  8. Also, one thing I loved about the hawks playing in Vancouver was the Tragically Hip song in between plays. Love the Hip.

Yeah, there is something magical about hearing the Hip at a hockey game. I saw their last show at the old Winnipeg Arena and they changed the words in Fifty Mission Cap from "Leafs" to "Jets", it was so sweet!

It should be a great, hard-fought game tonight. It will be interesting to see how Luongo responds after Friday's shelling.

  9. I don't have sound on my computer, but isn't that James Alley Blues? You can find out about that song in the Non-Album Tracks thread pinned at the top of this forum.

Yup, matches the lyrics I just googled. Thanks alot! I am in love with this song.

  10. I went through this exact thing after my last show. I became very disenchanted with writing and music in general. I had no idea what I wanted to listen to. What got me through my funk is reading Jeff Buckley's bio "Dream Brother", many long walks, and remembering why I got into playing guitar, making music and writing in the first place. Just for my own enjoyment and to keep myself sane.

I completely understand the frustration of comparing yourself to your favorite artists as well. You listen to them or see them live and think "what the hell is the point of me doing this, I can't get to that level".

For now I just don't play the songs of mine I hate, and I try to play and write at least a little bit every day. You never know when that one line you can build a great song around will pop out.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!
