  1. That was an interesting interview.

Worth listening to just for the story of how “One Sunday Morning” came to be. The recording on the album was the band’s first take, and then Jeff wrote all those verses to fit their extra-long jam. I like that. Shows that they truly are a collaborative band.

  2. My pre-order arrived here in New Zealand on the 23rd. I didn' t think it would get here is such good time, considering I chose the cheapest freight option.

It made for a particularly sweet Friday - even more so when the official release in NZ isn't until Monday.

I've been loving it. Best album I've bought in ages. Best Wilco album since Ghost.

  3. They did it! Ladies and gentlemen it is a fantastic day to be a Wilco fan. Here is my reaction, as hyperbolic and premature as it may be:

The Whole Love is the best record these guys have made in 6-7 years. Every song stands up, they all transcend their respective genres, they all go beyond the other Wilco albums you could compare them to. More than anything this LP is incredible because it creates its own world the way BT, AGIB, YHF and ST did, the way SBS partially did, and the way W(TA) failed to.

The acoustic based songs don't sound like a Tweedy solo track with overdubs added later. They sound like perfect jigsaw puzzle arrangements written with a top shelf six piece band taking complete ownership of every second. The high energy songs don't sound like "easy rockers" put in "for fun", but substantial additions to an already formidable catalog.

I enjoyed the last record as a new album from one of my favorite bands that fell between serviceable and great at various moments. I've already fallen in love with the Whole Love as an incredible record. No qualifiers needed.

    BINGO!

I haven't been this excited by some new music for some time. I only listened to the first half of the record during the stream, but my first thought was this was their best stuff since AGIB. I was grinning like a fool for the duration (which, to the outside world, appears only slightly different to my regular look).

  4. I can't tell you much about Yamahas, and those fancy workstations, but I can tell you that I never regretted buying a Nord.

They are incredibly playable and intuitive - they may be digital but they have a great feel. In your search, do not underestimate simplicity. The Nord's dedicated knobs and buttons were a breath of fresh air when they first came on the market. For too long keyboards were all about soft buttons and menus - and some of today's Workstations are still like that.

Korg's SV1 is similar to the Nord Electro, and looks cool and has a good piano sound:

See here for an earlier Nord chatter:

  5. dBpm was the working titile for A Ghost Is Born, John Stirrat even painted a cover for it, you can find it in The Wilco Book.

Seing as how A Ghost Is Born is Wilco's most art rock avant rock record or as i would refer to it their best record I am now slightly intrigued at the possible sound of the new record.Seems like Wilco may be upon a new age? a new evolution? The Nonesuch years pair down to this, YHF illi-NoisePoPAmericuna record AGISB aVANT rOCKamurika record SBS ROCKAMERICA record WTA PoPAMERICA record .

    m I write?

That photo that came with the press release is the most encouraging thing - they look like a tight band furtively experimenting. I am excited. Is that a drum machine that Mikael is playing with?

  6. I'm coming from Melbourne, Australia. Spending a month in the US, mixing up the cliche touristy stuff with some concerts. Staying at the Holiday Inn with an American friend I met at the 7WC2 shows in Auckland last year. If you hear an Aussie accent, there's a 50% chance it's me.

    Was it worth it?

(I think I probably already know the answer to that)

I live in NZ, and would seriously think about making the trip to a future Solid Sound (if everything else in my life at the time was in alignment).

  7. Speaking of "right when we finish a record", I received my new cds today! Those folks are discmakers are incredible!

I was just blown away with how nice they came out looking and sounding. If any of you guys have albums for sale, please let me know where to find them. Mine can be found here http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/BrownRecluse1 as a digital download..I sent a shipment of cds to cdbaby today, so hopefully soon, you can order the real disc.

I live in NW indiana in the town where the Indiana Dunes State park is. I know all you guys from Chicago know where the Dunes park is, because every single weekend in the summer, the entire parking lot is full of Illinois plates!

    Nice work

    Sounds great

An amazing feel, especially considering the two of you weren't even in the same room when you recorded it.

    Keep at it.

  8. Admirable setlist-keeping, Clint! (Can I call you Clint, though we've never met? Don't want to assume a first-name basis or anything. ;))

Glad you guys got a good show. The general admission standing shows are always better, aren't they? I mean, I had a fun time the last show in Welly (and will always hold a special memory of that show since I think that was where Wilco's involvement with the Finns and 7 Worlds Collide originated), but it was a pretty formal room. Jeff didn't say anything about the quality of the crowd's dancing, did he? :lol

And you've got to track down some Big Star! Such great, great stuff. :thumbup

Yo Paul, I will definitely track down some Big Star. It's a pity that I didn't meet you guys when you were here in '08 - I would have enjoyed showing you the sights - although it sounds like you found plenty of cool stuff all by yourselves. Next time. Or perhaps I should visit the States? May be see a few wilco shows.....

  9. John's amp stopped working and he threw his bass across the stage, and Jeff did a pretty good job of stage banter while it got fixed up.

    Other stories that Jeff shared:

    • He spent some of his time in Wellington in a cemetery. Apparently we have cool headstones. Made him "want to die"!?!
    • They no longer have the rugs on stage as they were ruined by flooding at Red Rocks. They have since discovered they are better off without them and everything sounds better now ;)
    • It was apparently easy to spot the Americans at the Japan shows as they were taller than everyone else - like whack-a-mole

I also have heard of one confirmed sighting of Pat post-gig at the best bar in town, Mighty Mighty.

    Out.

  10. Thanks for the setlist and info, Clint! And californiastar as well. Welly definitely wins for best reportage so far on this tour. I'm glad they played "Thank You Friends!" How well-known is Big Star in New Zealand?

Hey B - I can't speak for all of New Zealand, but I don't know any of their stuff. I only know what I've read on VC and the like. I actually had to look up an older setlist to get the title of the song right.

  11. Terrific show, of course. Way more ROCK than the last gig here. Nice to get the contrast.

Jeff was in fine form. Excellent banter that kicked off with him asking a girl why she was talking through the show - she made the mistake of talking back. He then introduced the next song (She's a jar) as coincidentally being a song about hitting women - which sounds quite wrong in type, but was delivered in good spirits. Replacement of the bass rig after it failed during You Never Know gave Jeff plenty of time to chat, which was great.

What a band! What a show.

Got to admire their stamina - they gave it their all and they had a 4am lobby call to look forward to for their flight to Sydney.

Thanks wilco. I really mean it. Thanks for coming all this way and giving us all a great night. It will take a lot to kill this post-gig buzz.

  13. Someone do it, please! It doesn't require that much methodical-ness (methodicism?). I'd love to be in Welly again, but it's not going to happen this time so it'd be great to get a report...:thumbup

And have fun, all you Kiwis! :cheers

    Seconded. Wish I were there!

Never fear, my furry American friends, the setlist will be recorded in a methodicalised fashion. I'm there for you.

It should be quite a different vibe to last time, now that we've got the GA standing area.

    3 sleeps.
