  1. Great they are coming back to Australia - but pissed off they aren't bothering to play any New Zealand dates this time around. Was really looking foward to seeing them in Auckland and Wellington again. Guess they feel that playing those 7 Worlds Collide shows in Auckland earlier this year filled their NZ qouta for the time being. :hmm

I think it's a bit early to be making a call like that.

If I was a betting man, I'd say they'll visit NZ after those Melbourne shows.

It would be nice to know soon though - I'd make the trip over to Melbourne or Sydney to see 'em if they don't make it across the ditch this time.

  2. There’s no point trying to add another reason why this album is so good – I think that’s been covered. YHF is without a doubt one of, if not my, favourite album. I find it is extremely comforting to listen to. It hasn’t dated at all to my ears, and is continually interesting and exciting. I still hear new things on each listen.

    That is all.

  3. I was cleaning my basement tonight, and I found an old keyboard :yes Its an old guy, but it works. I think I'm going to give that a go for 6 months or so, learn some basics, and that probably go the MIDI route. I do some occasional guitar recording, so I have all of the necessary pieces for that. Now, would any keyboard that claims to have midi ability work as a controller, or should I get a higher quality newer model. I see several craiglist postings, but they all look like they are 10 or so years old. :brow

The MIDI standard has been pretty solid since the 80s. Any keyboard that has a MIDI Out port can be used as a “controller”.

Dedicated MIDI Controller keyboards have no built-in sounds and generally have lots of controller types, like sliders and wheels. Usually theycan split their keyboard into multiple MIDI zones.

For the ability to play sounds from a MIDI device (software emulator or hardware),any old MIDI keyboard should do the job.

  4. Not everybody who reads these articles is an uberfan of Wilco like those who frequent a fan board. These articles are not written with us in mind.

It was a pretty nice article.

    I agree.

The Wilco Story is a pretty good one, and not everybody has heard it. A cracker of a story, like theirs, is exactly the the sort of thing that might get a reader interested enough to seek out their music. That's a good thing.

The curse of being a Wilco fan is that you can never discover them again.

  5. i can wait!

I agree, that’s not that far away – 9 months. Most of those months are summer/holiday months too, and we all know that they fly by pretty quickly.

Geez, you wouldn’t want to get anyone pregnant about now. Imagine that, in 9 months time your life-partner starts going into labour and you have to choose between accompanying her to the hospital or going to the Wilco gig. Man, that’d be a tough call.

  6. saw Funny People today, nobody attends a Wilco concert.

WhatWilco songs featured during the film? As,we know, the soundtrack album has a live version of “Jesus, etc” – did that getsome good airtime, and did they throw any other Wilco songs? One of the Trailers featured nothing’severgonnastandinmyway– was that in there anywhere?

  7. I'm a studio engineer and producer at Radio New Zealand and have known Neil Finn for many years. Have done a bit of work at his Roundhead Studios at various times but had no direct involvement in the recording of The Sun Came Out. However, my partner and I are keen Wilco fans so we attended all three 7 Worlds Collide concerts in Auckland this year - up the front every night.

Because Neil had commitments overseas in August, we pre-recorded our interview a month ago. Lucky me - I got to hear the album early. :music

    Check it out here:

  8. USA release date is September 29th.

There'll be a radio feature about the 7 Worlds Collide project on Radio New Zealand National's Music 101 programme tomorrow. That's Saturday 15th August, just after 2pm NZ time (check your world clock). It begins with a section from the 7 Worlds Collide mix of "You Never Know" before going into an interview with Neil Finn. This can be heard online at http://www.radionz.co.nz/music101.

They were going to play a short interview with John Stirratt after that (featuring the other Wilco-headed songs from the album) but I've just heard it's been dropped from the broadcast schedule due to lack of time. However, John's full interview will be archived online after 5pm Saturday NZ time at www.radionz.co.nz/musictalk along with an extended version of my interview with Neil. Due to copyright reasons, the music won't be included in the archived features. A pity, as the John Stirratt item included excerpts from his beautiful "Over and Done", Pat's "Don't Forget Me" and Jeff's "What Could Have Been".

It's an entertaining TV doco. There was talk of putting together an extended theatrical release.

Mr Jaffaman, if that is your real name, you seem to have quite a lot of inside info on this.

What's your connection to the project/National radio?

    Thanks for posting.

I'm looking forward to tuning-in shortly....

  9. I’m not holding out a lot of hope of finding a copy down here in NZ. I’m thinking about resorting to e-Bay.

    Desperate times.

  10. I thought it was "Cissy Strut" by The Meters.

I agree, "Cissy Strut" (which is called "Missy Strut" on "The Original Funkmasters" compilation, for some reason) is pretty damn close.

    Well spotted!

  11. It looks like Spin Magazine is hard to come by in these parts these days. It use to be around over a year or so ago, but I don't think there was enough of a market for it to continue to be imported.

Any New Zealand-based VC'ers (and I know you're out there) know where I might be able to get a copy?

Anyone else in the world know if you can order just the August edition from somewhere on the interweb (without having to subscribe for a year)?

    Cheers!

  12. Watching this performance is exactly the reason i prefer live music to recorded. After two weeks of heavy rotation listening to the recored i never fully appreciated the guitar parts until last night. Nels work at the end of this song added so much to the vibe of this song watching him play it live.

    Great job Wilco!

Totally agree. The performance had great feel and joy. Let's not forget the keyboard guys - the interplay between Pat on the uber cool white wurlitzer, and Mikael on the organ was tremendous!

wilco & feist loves you, baby

  13. WTA review from the SBS loving (and possibly dyslexic) Russell Baillie of the NZ Herald;

    NZ Herald

And another from Radio NZ - the Wilco section is at the start of the podcast.

    Radio NZ

Some nice observations (apart from the tenuous Crowded House comparisons at the end; I think the only thing the two bands have in common is that they can both pay homage to the Beatles yet still sound unmistakably like themselves).

Album also got a really nice 5 star review in NZ music monthly Real Groove (not available in online version yet)

So lots of favorable coverage for WTA down here - maybe record first week album sales from NZ as well for the boys (which will be about, um, 99 units....)

    Thanks for posting.

I really liked Nick's review on National Radio - he's a very articulate and knowledgeable guy. It was a good follow up to his excellent analysis of the AOAF DVD (which is unfortunately no longer available for download).

To the rest of you - there's only a few days left to grab the album review - definitely worth a listen.
