That's a very true statement for me. I've listened to it more than any other 2008 album.
not meaning to be "that guy" really, but for me Vampire Weekend was def a 2007 record, because i wore out the Blue CD-R from August of last year through December when the real thing leaked, which only differed by 2 songs.
haven't listened to the proper record too much in '08
-
weird how almost everybody on this board is so in love with the same stuff - bon iver, raconteurs, fleet foxes, dr. dog, my morning jacket, drive by truckers ...
i can't stand any of those
and the REM and vampire weekend records? seriously?
the best things i've heard so far in 2008 are the british sea power, the alejandro, albert hammond and matt keating's quixotic, which is at the top of the heap
you're just THAT much cooler than all of us apparently.

Now:
Which I've yet to make my mind up about...
it's pretty good... but it sounds a lot like Rage to be honest
Jon Theodore rules tho
-
Yeah, Wilco circa 2008 is far more popular than Lucinda Williams circa 2003.
a little, sure, but they play similiar size venues
-
Which last one? Pussy Cats or A Hundred Miles Off?
Hundred Miles Off
just found that one meandering and dull. not a fan of that whole calypso vibe.
White Rabbits do that way better than the Walkmen.
this new one is definitely growing on me, but i just wish it had a rocker or two to pick up the pace on occasion. no real standout hooks for me, just a lilting vibe throughout. it's kinda like what Boxer would be like without Mistaken For Strangers, Brainy, and Squalor Victoria.
-
yeah, they both check it still i believe.
-
ps - what address did you email him at?
you could try: creaturefear@gmail.com

But they have better songs, for sure. And Paul has much better songs too, solo or otherwise. It's kind of bland, but it does have a beautiful melody.
that i can agree with
Just like the Beatles themselves. -
Or maybe it's all based on your respective opinions, thus making any point either of you makes moot.
did you miss the point above where i stated it's simply an opinion and not an issue of "right or wrong" like Dr. Canuck was trying to make it out to be?
since you claim to be a huge Beatles/Mac fan, curious where Yesterday falls for you. it's always felt more in line with Paul's solo work than the Beatles for me to be perfectly honest.

Just because it's not one of your favourites doesn't make it "overrated". All I'm saying is a song with a legacy like that can't be THAT bad. There's plenty of highly regarded music that I don't care for, but I'm not going to call it bad just because it's not what I'm into! HOWEVER, I don't want to fight with you, Solace, so let's agree to disagree
right, but just because everyone and their brother has recorded a cover of it, doesn't mean it's in the Beatles top 10 either
even IF i loved Yesterday, i'd still think it's overrated by the general populous

Ummmm...... actually, you're both incredibly wrong. Yesterday is a great song. There's a reason why it's the most recorded song in the history of pop-music, and there's a reason why it's one of the most celebrated songs by one of the greatest ever songwriters.
o i c, thank you for correcting me
Yesterday is one of, if not THE most overrated songs in the entire Beatles catalog, sorry. it's always been way too schmaltzy for me.
i'm as big of Beatles fan as they come, and it's definitely not even close to being in my top 50 Beatles songs, no "right or wrong" about it. hell, it's not even close to one of my favorite McCartney tunes either.
-
Weird. A friend just sent me an IM saying he'd picked this up. How is it? I have Emotionalism and I think it's alright, but I can't get past lyrics like "Love writes a letter and sends it to hate."
it's not as great as the first Gleam EP, but still pretty awesome.
Emotionalism is decent, but far from my favorite full length of theirs. Mignonette is my favorite easily, then A Carolina Jubilee and Country Was.
-
I mean put First Day of my life up against the beatles Yesterday it satnds up.
that isn't really that high of praise.... Yesterday isn't even that great of a song honestly... wouldn't put it in my top 50 Beatles songs, maybe not even top 100...

I thought the Pitchfork review was pretty dead on. Fate does not work for me. We All Belong is a much stronger affair.
nah, keep trying, it's still got some absolutely killer songs, and is nowhere near a 5.5, more like a solid 7-7.5 imo.
i do like We All Belong more (closer to an 8) tho
-
i'm kinda glad honestly... a good Pfork score would have just brought in mostly annoying scenesters/hipsters to Dr. Dog's shows anyway
-
agree... the lyrics to that song are painfully honest. It's probably the only song that really suffers from the "ADD" format, since the last third of it (the most emotional part) is only played in the right channel with another song in the left.
yes.
one of the more annoying parts of the album for me :/
that song deserves a better treatment than it got.

Curious, solace - sounds like a great bill with New Pornos, Cloud Cult, Bird, etc. - were there other stages going on at the same time? I think he'd do fine in front of a big crowd if the venue was appropriate. For instance, I think he'd have been a great addition to the Pitchfork preview show at the Pritzker last Thursday night.
nah, it was just one big stage w/ all 4 acts after each other, he opened the show at like 5pm or so.
was def a great bill tho, we rarely get great/cool outdoor shows like that here, so that was a treat
-
With the exception of my wife, I have yet to meet someone that has heard Dr. Dog and not liked it (last two albums only). I haven't dug into their older stuff either. Is it in the same ballpark?
yep... Easy Beat has some total gems and is def worth checking out, the ones earlier than that are a bit hit or miss for me, but still some great songs scattered throughout.
-
Best show I've ever seen by far, Golden Smog, 400 Bar, 8/7/03.
the next night wasn't too shabby either
-
he's been re-working a lot of the songs already... i've probably heard 3 or 4 completely different takes on Creature Fear... always the sign of a great artist imo.
-
hmm... guess it depends on the show, because i've seen Justin (Bon Iver) play in front of less than 30 people and as many as 8,000 recently with a bill of Bon Iver > Cloud Cult > New Pornographers > Andrew Bird, and he killed it even in front of that many people outside on a sunny afternoon.
of the 10x i've seen him now, only 2 or 3 have been just average, rest have been stunning
-
I don't think it is either, but having to cancel two shows in New York doesn't help you alot.
they've already played there 2 or 3 times this year though, and they're not canceling them, just postponing them a month
this new album has already propped up their visibility quite a bit
-
Ugh, I feel awful for them. I really felt like this record was going to push them to another level, and this is just terrible timing.
eh, while it sucks, it's only delaying their tour by a few days, hardly a nail in the coffin type event
