  1. ction,

Whilst discussing the band Wilco on a popular internet message board, what's the best reason to give for the band's creative downslide on the past few albums? Firing Jay Bennett? Jeff not wanting to write awesome songs like Misunderstood anymore? Can Ken Coomer be blamed for all of this in some way?

    Thanks,

Great question, Mike! I think the following all play a role in me not liking the new Wilco as much as the old Wilco:

    1. Gibson guitars. Especially the SG. Don't get me wrong, I love SGs. Ian MacKaye played an SG. Angus Young plays an SG. More importantly, Jeff Erg plays an SG. They are great guitars. I'd like an SG of my own someday. Jeff Tweedy should play a Fender.

    2. Rehab. There are probably a million important reasons why this was good for Jeff Tweedy the person. I don't care about any of them. Because...

    3. I'm a contrarian dickhead.

    4. George W. Bush. Makin' artists all angry and artistic n shit. It's no shock that Wilco made their best music with Clinton in office - chasin' tail and livin' large. Obama gives me hope and change for the future, although things aren't off to a good start on this front (yet). The next album should be good though...

  2. The last new one you let us listen to once a week. but now that's an old one. What about the new new one? and do we have to (or can we) stop listening to the old one once a week now?

Sorry, I missed this post (between the board being down and me not caring about helping people enjoy Wilco my way). I went to see Wilco this week, btw. It was at times awesome, boring, and unpleasant. The new album is a lot like that as well, just without the awesome parts. Go buy the new Son Volt album instead.

  3. I was pleasantly surprised by Conor Oberst. I have not liked any of the Bright Eyes stuff that I've heard, but a good portion of his set was alright. Save for that "Cape Canaveral" song, which was kinda cruddy.

Also, can anyone confirm that he warmed up for the set by throwing rocks into the river with his "pa"?

  4. As someone who only leaves the house for work, I'm pretty ok with the idea of martial law. Also, as someone who loves the sound of an overdriven tube amplifier, I'd be pretty ok with the idea of Marshall law as well.

  5. I have two extra lawn tickets for this show. I'm just asking face value for the actual tickets - $64. You save $17 total in processing and delivery fees, and get to deal with an awesome message board poster such as myself instead of a soulless ticket selling website.

Send me an e-mail at: seanmcgowan1 at cox dot net if you are interested.

    Thanks,

    ction

  6. There's a reason nobody likes you, and it's because you are always wrong about everything.

I thought nobody liked me because I was an asshole...

    Well, there's that too.

    This still makes me laugh.

P.S. There have been a lot of intersting lists so far, and I think I've actually had my mind changed at least twice. Here's my updated list:

    AM

    BT

    ST

    YHF

    AGIB

    SBS

  7. One can't be a true Wilco fan and say that SBS sucks, or AM sucks, etc. They may not be your favorite of their albums but I know you don't think they suck, or else you wouldn't be hanging out at Via Chicago. :)

    Good bit.

  8. Why are people not washing their hands???? Really, is it that time-consuming or laborious?

I'm trying to use the fear of death by pig flu to get my kids to wash their hands more often. Sometimes it takes drastic measures to repeat as Father of the Year...

P.S. As of last night, "Hey, you were just knuckle-deep in your nostril, go wash your hands" is now something I have said out loud.

  9. The first few minutes of the Fox 5 10 pm news on Monday were great. The male anchor, in particular, looked like he was as excited as my kids on Christmas Eve about the prospect of a potential pandemic. He could barely contain his glee when talking about the flu's inevitable spread to every neighborhood in America (and beyond).

Honestly, the only concern I have about this crap is for my kids. Especially the little one, since he's not 4 yet and no one has any real idea how nasty this thing could end up being over time.
