  2. I've almost completed my first new song (writing, not recording) in a long fracking time.

The verses need not only lyrics, but a solid melody.

    But the chorus... yeah.

    "I Don't Drink"

As simple a song as you can get, and damn near cliche country tune. But I think the chorus rings true, which you can't fake, and is a pretty good turn of phrase, too.

  3. In the 90s, my friends and I simply referred to him as "The Taper Guy" and we knew that, if we saw him set up at the soundboard at a show we were attending, we were in the right place that night!

He recorded more than 10,000 shows in Chicago over the years, and his collection is finally being made available online.

    Read about it HERE.

And access the whole collection (what's been made available so far) HERE.

I cannot wait to comb through this stuff. Any fans of 80s-90s indie rock (and into the 00s), you need to do the same. I am certain that I was at many of these shows.

    How did it go?

My draw: not great. But not terrible for a 54-year-old suburbanite playing a Wednesday night in the city. I think that I played pretty well. Got a lot of good feedback, including from one of the other artists on the bill who asked me if he could cover one of my songs. Always flattering!

Hope to do it again soon; either at the Montrose or someplace else. (But I do love The Montrose.) And hopefully on a weekend.

  5. Been listening to this for 10-15 years now. Love this record. And, coincidentally, found out that one of the members of this NJ-based band moved to Chicago and went on to help form The Embryos, a great local band, here! Such a weird, wonderful, random thing.

  6. I know it's been a while since I've posted here regularly, but I'm excited to have my first gig since before COVID hit.

So far, all I know is that it will be Weds. Nov. 20 at the Montrose Saloon.

I'll share more details as I get them.

I do hope that some of you (whoever still hangs around here) will be able to swing by. Would love to see you - or meet you!

EDIT: Here is a link to the Facebook event if you want to respond and have a reminder: https://www.facebook.com/events/859320083072643
