  1. Been watching Arcane on Netflix. Utterly amazing/beautiful animation - among the best I've ever seen, but the story is lacking I have no idea what's going on. Something about blue power crystals, and purple juice, and Topsiders and Lowsiders. But man is it all so gorgeous to look at.

I suggested watching Pacific Rim with the kiddos for Family Movie night - I had forgotten that it's a Guillermo Del Toro (big fan) flick - I missed it when it came out initially. Wife put the kibosh on it within the first minute (TOO SCARY!), so we opted for Up instead, which I had never seen. Cute film.

I see that Drive My Car just arrived on HBOMAX, so I'm hoping to catch it soon. Beepbeep, beepbeep, YEAH!

One of our favorite recent shows, Better Things, just started a new season. Great stuff. Pamela Adlon is so great, and so bold for sticking with creating a show that virtually has no plot from episode to episode.

  2. Started up Guillermo Del Toro's latest on HBOMAX: Nightmare Alley. Grim stuff. Will have to take a certain determination to get back into it.

Other recent viewings: Book of Boba Fett - enjoyed it, but not a good sign that the two best episodes were the ones that were primarily about The Mandalorian, and not the titular character.

Lost Daughter - good film, about the hardships of being a parent, and the ramifications of making selfish decisions that might not be apparent until many years later.

Power of the Dog - good film, (another dour one!) - but such a long game slow burn. Was always intriguing though.

Took my 16 year old to Jackass Forever. We both cringed and laughed throughout. The adrenaline rush I get just from watching other people do those sort of things rivals riding a roller coaster.

Reading about Knoxville's latest injuries that he suffered makes me thing that this one has GOT to be the last one, right?

I watched this last night and thought it was great.  My only complaint is that they did not tell enough of the story, and now I have to wait years until the next installment is made.

Both the cast performances and the cinematography were spectacular!

I've just read that part 2 has been green-lit, and he also wants to do a part 3 - being Dune Messiah.

Gorgeous film, and the soundtrack is great too. I'm already viewing it again, in small bits. I don't think I ever watched the entirety of Lynch's version, and I haven't read the book, but now that I understand the basics of the plot, I've got a copy reserved at the library.

I'm a big fan of Schitt's Creek - and feel like it got better as it went along.  For me, Chris Elliott is the weak link.  I generally like him so I'm not sure why his character bothered me.  It's not just because he was obnoxious at times but I can't figure it out.

I kinda hope that in an alternate universe that John Candy would have had that role.

I haven't thought about this movie for a long time. I loved it as well. IIRC, it was kind of marketed as a quirky comedy, so when Ray Liotta's character was introduced, I was taken on an incredible, and completely unexpected thrilling, intense ride. Watched it several times after my initial viewing. Haven't seen it in a LONG time.

That performance got him the Goodfellas gig.

  7. Man, I was feeling low on Wednesday morning. I think it all turned around for me when Biden took the lead in MI later that morning, and all Vegas betting lines started to heavily favor him. (Biden's chances, according to betting lines, fell as low as 25% sometime late Tuesday night, but were up to 90% by noon the next day)

Over the weekend, I read that Biden will end up with 306 electoral votes, assuming he ends up winning PA, AZ, and GA. Which would be more electoral votes than Donald received in 216 (he had 304) - which is great for a number of reasons, but mainly: 1) Trump has always called his 304 electoral vote victory a landslide. So what's a landslide plus 2? 2) This time around he would end up with less electoral votes than Hillary did 4 years ago, which I would have to imagine would piss him off to no end.

I've seen many many humorous references to STOP THE COUNT - from sports teams sitting atop their division, to birthday celebrations.

The best tweet over the weekend was Trumps on Saturday morning, where he declared, in all-caps, that HE WON, BY A LOT.

We cranked Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA" to volume 11 Saturday night, and our kids had a blast.

If Detroit pulls it off, I swear the sheer amount of shit I talk about the city will dramatically decrease (keep it confined to baseball and hockey).

Biden is now leading in Michigan. If he maintains his lead in Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin (and if he gets his one electoral vote in Nebraska) that will total him out exactly at 270.

That's the good news. The bad news is that 66 million people want Trump re-elected.

Not sure I understand this. You mean they're not allowing a la carte pre-orders on the next pick--or not doing pre-orders on the subscription? Seems like you can pre-order the sub here.

No pre-orders on individual Dave's Picks. It goes on sale the day it goes on sale.

Yeah, I no longer have a CD drive, and my old 6-disc player crapped out a while back—so I’m reduced to playing CDs only in the car! I think they should automatically provide a download link for those who buy the discs, but also offer digital only.

I see they're no longer doing pre-orders as well. Strange decision.

Dave's Picks 37 just announced: 4/15/78 plus unidentified "bonus material" from some other show on the same tour.

No word on what Vol. 38 w/bonus disc will entail.

I think I'm gonna sit next year out. I have more than enough of this stuff, and can always buy 7/18/72 a la carte if they ever release it.

It would be nice if they moved to a digital delivery option.

I just replaced my 10-year old Mac, and the new one doesn't have a CD Drive!

Borat just doesn’t do it for me. Even knowing the Rudy scene was ahead couldn’t keep me watching.  I gave up about 30 mins in.  I just don’t find the character or premise all that funny or interesting. 🤷‍♂️

Same - we got about 30 minutes in and lost interest. The skit I remember was when he was dictating a fax to some poor old guy working at the neighborhood Kinkos.

Yeah, but compared to tripe like this - (budget, maybe $1,000?) the exotic locales of the Duran Duran videos were a godsend.

Back to EVH - Hot for Teacher just couldn't be made today. You've got two different teachers/strippers gyrating in front of kids! Eddie's performance in that video makes me laugh - he couldn't get DLR's choreography down.

Today I learned that Phil Hartman supplied the voice for Waldo in that vid.

We didn't have cable in my house, so I only got to see MTV when I'd visit my grandparents each summer, so my MTV experience might be different than others, but:

Michael Jackson, obviously.  The David Bowie China Girl video is a pretty massive one in my memory.  Maybe Duran Duran.

But Van Halen Hot for Teacher was a huge smash.  Probably a bigger deal than Thriller for me, which I only saw after it had been out a while.

My picks are not too far from that. I would also say Duran Duran, David Bowie, Hot for Teacher, and I'm Just a Gigolo - which is probably my #1 video of all time.

I remember watching USA network's "Night Flight" on Friday night sleepovers - waiting for the "unedited" Girls on Film, or another one by Berlin (forget the song) that were too risque to show during daylight hours...

  15. Dweezil Zappa has put out some kind words for EVH. I know they had a close relationship. Eddie showed up in person for Dweezil's talent show in HS, and lent him his guitar for the performance. Dweezil also says that Eddie was the first person to call him after FZ passed.
