  1. The opening show of the tour got a glowing review in today's Wall Street Journal:

A Band of Prowess and Ingenuity

    By JIM FUSILLI

    May 7, 2008; Page D9

    West Palm Beach, Fla.

Like the Beatles -- the only band with whom Radiohead can be compared for the arc of their career and their willingness to challenge their own legacy to an excellent result -- Radiohead has evolved to a point where their only influence is themselves and their quest to be exceptional.

Holy fanboy review. This is above and beyond ridiculous. Radiohead doesn't even have the discography of Bowie or the Stones, let alone the Beatles.

  2. Do the folks who loved this album when it first came out still think it holds up? I am curious...

It's forgettable crap. I don't know anyone who still listens to it. It will be remembered for it's marketing scheme, not for it's subpar, retread music.

  3. I can't believe they just got the 64-71 Stones. Huge windfall for Emusic. Goood for them. I join up for about three months a year, then quit, then join again. They don't get stuff in fast enough for me.

  4. :yes Yeah - it may not be original, but if you're gonna steal, steal from the best. :thumbup

I know Poon and others mentioned Gilmour, but I've always been of the opinion that Dave's solo on "Time" might just be the most perfectly recorded solo ever. I always get this image of him standing in an open field, with stacks of amps as big as skyscrapers just blasting the sounds for miles and miles.

hahha yeah that might be the coolest solo/tone ever.

  5. This should be obvious but Johnny Greenwood!!!! The Bends, bends my ears!! Ok Computer is all tone the Paranoid Andriod freakout!! Just for my sakes!!

I gotta see these guys live someday soon.

Nah. The Paranoid Android freakout sounds exactly like the stuff Gilmour was doing in "Astronomy Domine" live in 68-69.

  6. Gilmour (probably the king of texture/tone- had several different gorgeous trademark sounds)

Barrett (his crazy distorted work on Piper was groundbreaking to say the least)

Hendrix ( the ultimate guitar god, who also happened to be friends with Barrett)

Those three changed it all IMHO. The Edge's sound can be heard on "re-emergence" from Echoes and Run Like Hell.

    the following:

    Page

    Townsend

    Fripp

    Angus Young

    Neil Young

  8. yeah, the title cut is the shit.

as surprising as it is for me to say this, i love Tim O'Reagan's solo album from '06 way way more than this.

    Chris Robinson ruined Vagabonds IMHO.

And yeah, the title cut is amazing.

  9. This goes out to Hype as well.

Just because somebody goes along with something doesn't mean they aren't being objectified. And the point you made Hype hits the nail on the head. MEN LIKE WOMEN that way, not women naturally decided shaving their legs and pits was awesome. If women don't conform to these standards they will be ostracized by our society.

So do men who grow giant beards or really long hair.

A women with hair on her legs is natural.

    It's also gross.

But being natural won't let her get a job on wall street, or a lead role in a movie.

Same with an unkempt man who grows a giant beard.

The Lips putting these images on their screen is reenforcing societies stereotypes. Yet wayne babbles on about bringing people together and making a difference, I don't think those ideas go along with the oppression of women, something he is taking part in promoting.

You must be a 19 year old art student. There's no opression of women going on at a Lips show.

  10. 1. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

    2. Hollywood Town Hall - The Jayhawks

    3. Our Mother the Mountain - Townes Van Zandt

    4. Abbey Road - The Beatles

    5. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

    6. Ys - Joanna Newsom

    7. The Soft Bulletin - The Flaming Lips

    8. Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan

    9. Meddle - Pink Floyd

    10. House of the Holy - Led Zeppelin

    11. Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts - M83

    12. The Sophtware Slump - Grandaddy

    13. The Dirty South - The Drive By Truckers

    14. Days of Future Passed - The Moody Blues

    15. If You're Feeling Sinister - Belle and Sebastian

    16. In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson

    17. American Beauty - The Grateful Dead

    18. Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones

    19. It's a Wonderful Life - Sparklehorse

    20. The Mollusk - Ween

That's what it is right now. Tomorrow I could have Trace, Piper among others in there.

  11. 1. Hollywood Town Hall

    2. Tomorrow the Green Grass

    3. Blue Earth

    4. Salvation Blues (Olson)

    5. Rainy Day Music (Olson-less Jayhawks)

    Get those albums immediately.

    Exactly.

Whiskeytown - don't forget to put them in there somewhere

That's like putting General Hospital next to "There Will be Blood and "No Country For Old Men".

  12. Which version of The Byrds? They certainly weren't mainstream fluff with Parsons on board. You need to check out Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

Very mainstream. I'd give more credit to Townes Van Zandt on stuff like "Our Mother the Mountain" and "The Late Great Townes Van Zandt". There was nothing alternative sounding about the vocals or instrumentation of the Byrds. It had a very poppy west coast sound that fit right in on standard pop stations. Compare that to Townes Van Zandts un-radio friendly vocals or Gary Lourises alternative guitar flourishes on Blue Earth and Hollywood Town Hall.

"Poncho and Lefty" has an alternative sound to it, along with some of what Young and Dylan were doing. The Byrds sound like Brooks and Dunn compared to some of that stuff.
