  1. weird. i was just listening to the 1.30.07 show in knoxville and after playing jesus etc. tweedy says something like 'i'm now going to go from one of wilcos most popular songs to one of our most obscure.' then he plays cars can't escape. that show has to be one of the best tweedy shows ever. cars can't escape, chinese apple, wait up, wishful thinking...

hope they play it at your show.

  2. alright take it easy on the groupings. there's no right way to group any half of an artists albums. i was just really bored at work and was looking at wilco's discography on wikipedia and imagining which 4 i'd get rid of if i had to.

i chose alternating releases rather than the later 4 vs the newer 4 (all the 'true fans' would clearly vote for the older 4).

  3. sbs is a pretty peaceful/mellow/non-interpretive/non-experimental album. songs like "i'll fight," "bull black nova," and "dark neon" definitely don't feel like they belong there. especially "bull black nova." i could see "solitaire" (sort of like "please be patient with me") and "deeper down." not sure about "one wing."

i think sbs works perfectly well by itself. in fact, i think the songs are more interconnected than any other wilco album.

  4. I posted this in the other thread and did a search but came up with nothing. I was watching "The Strangers" yesterday and Liv Tyler puts on a record with Tweedy singing "At My Window Sad and Lonely" (I'm pretty sure it was just him solo with a guitar and harmonica). I've got both Mermaid Avenues and the demos, but can't find this version of the song.

Anyone know where I can find it??

  5. Perfectly good question.

I think Nels Cline is amazing guitarist, but his time with the band is running out. In 06-07 when the SBS songs were new his playing blew me away. But nowadays, after three years of the same Impossible Germany solo, how much more can you take? Other lineups were not 1/2 as technical proficient at their instruments but at least the shows had some variance between them, you know? Now it's like the band is playing Guitar Hero and trying to see how well they can hit each scripted note. While I realize playing all the songs like album tracks is probably Tweedy's call, I still think it will take a new lead guitarist to get the band out of the habit.

  6. it's cool this guy is a tweedy fan but ...

those are ridiculous choices. if they are ranking them in order of importance in tweedy's career, i can definitely see the long cut being pretty significant... and maybe even it's just that simple. but promising doesn't deserve to be there. if they are ranking them in terms of music/lyrics, i don't think any of those are even close to his later works (ie muzzle of bees, i am trying to break your heart).

unless this guy is just listing is favorite 20 songs. in which case that makes sense.

  7. really cool concert last night. alongside ryan adams, jeff tweedy and conor oberst are my favorite singers ever. so to see conor oberst open for wilco was awesome. the venue was pretty cool. never seen a show at a ball park before, but the atmosphere was awesome (cotton candy sellers, fireworks going off...)the setlist was alright. can't stand and box full of letters stole the show (two songs i thought tweedy hated). the sound wasn't all the great, partly because of the speakers and partly because off the inherently bad acoustics in center field. the band seemed in good spirits though... tweedy played the guitar with his teeth, let someone in the crowd strum his guitar, ate some celery off the ground, swung the mic around during hummingbird (made an impressive catch that i was sure wasn't going to work out). pat and nels had dueling solos during hoodoo voodoo.

all around it was a really fun night despite the average setlist and poor sound.

by the way... i'm pretty sure it's always 48 "nothings" nowadays during misunderstood. at least thats what i counted in philly last winter and in willmington last night (12 x 4 i guess).

  8. the tempo change in 'you are my face' is one of my favorite parts of any wilco song ever. i don't think many people would enjoy the song if it was just tweedy whispering poetry over a D chord the entire time, you know? the music rises with the lyrics. nothing like phish at all.

edit: it's the exact same thing in 'misunderstood' too, no?

  9. You got it. It is E Esus4 and A for the verse. Pretty sure.

    Then for the "It's a secret... etc lines... D A D D#dim

    I don't care anymore... is Em A

    That's the whole song.

    yeah. i agree with that.

  10. i think the first verse is supposed to emphasize the mundane, trivial everyday life in american society. cigarettes, diet coca-cola, and particularly a cash machine are all kind of american symbols, and unflattering ones at that. he didn't say motorcycles, pie, and baseball ... he chose corrupting and addicting items.

"i wonder why we listen to poets/when nobody gives a fuck" ... perhaps the perception of americans kind of lack of emphasis on thought maybe...

the next few verses are kind of obscure but the closing verse is my favorite, when he becomes patriotic despite all his country's ills. he would like to salute his decaying country ('the ashes of american flags') and all our dead soldiers ('filling up [body] bags')

this is far and away one of his coolest songs. it could have been titled 'my country has disappeared' way before the new song that just came out. both narrators are kind of naive about the definition of a country...

  11. my friend called me up while he was at the phillies game on friday to tell me that jamie moyer walks out to some wilco song. so when he got back i went through all the songs that i thought it could have been, and he recognized "i got you."

needless to say, jamie moyer is my new favorite philly.

i have suspicions he walks out to wilco because he is secretly john stirratt (and also, the dad from "boy meets world.")
