  1. When I bought Sugar Mtn I purchased the CD/DVD copy and with the exception of the amusement of having the Archives Trailer on it (historically speaking it is cool to have a trailer for something we'll never see). Anyway I was a little underwhelmed by the DVD content and my wife said, "Do you like staring at a picture of Neil Young?"

When I bought Filmore and Massey Hall I just bought the CD copy. Are the DVD versions worth it (have any interesting content) or is just like Sugar Mountain where there is the same picture on the screen while the audio plays?

  2. Just noticed there is a 6 song live I tunes exclusive up on Itunes (that was obvious)

I haven't downloaded because it says live from Vegas (that just makes me feel dirty)

Anyway it looks like a mix of one unreleased and 5 older songs.

    Anyone heard it yet?

  3. i think what's even more impressive (and at times downright scary) is that Robin Pecknold is only 22 years old... guy has a LOT of great years ahead of him and is off to one helluva start.

That is music making prime in my mind. I always listen to early neil young and think wow he was 23 when he put out Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Crazy..................(wait for it)............Horse!

  4. If you listen to Mykonos and don't hear CSN then you haven't really listened to CSN. Also I'll agree that seeing them live IS the way to go. I had never heard a note from them until I saw them at Sasquatch and that was all it took. I thought they were real solid on SNL. Sounded great.

  5. My comment isn't as much about the rock and roll hall of fame (because that is stupid and tiresome) it is more about award shows. Why do the movies have a critically (not popular) based award show circuit, while music has only popular based awards? I mean, you watch the Academy Awards or Golden Globes and they are all non mainstream endeavours (usually). But you watch the Grammy's and it ALL mainstream. I just wish music we listen to would get the sun shined down on it without it having to be on some wierd interent blog or fanzine. As for the RnRoll HOF. that is a true joke. Jeff Beck? cmon, name one Jeff Beck song that is memorable. And I don't mean was a hit, one that you couldn't live without. He is in that Eric Clapton (ooh I can play! ) category that bores me to tears. Great you can really hammer it out on the ol guitar, now write a song that I will remember tomorrow.

  6. A few Fleet Foxes notes here (for those who aren't cool enough to do the indie/blog backlash)

They will be the musical guest on SNL this weekend

Aquarium Drunkard blog has a recent concert availble via mp3's

They will reenergize your love for your old CSN albums, and maybe even make you kind of appreciate David Crosby in general (which for me is saying something)

  7. After watching this again, I have to agree that Jay took his normal sulking to a whole other level here. I would have accidently back handed him with my telecaster if I was Jeff. BTW, saw the bottle rockets about a year after this was aired and they were selling those Harley T shirts. Of course I had to snag one. Sweet shirt for a nice little band.

  8. This appearance on Conan changed my musical life. This is what introduced me to Tupelo back in the day, and the rest is history. I noticed on the response above that Wilco also played Box Full of Letters on Conan. Anyone have that to post.

  9. Ok, great

I don't want to argue about it, Neil is probably one of my favorites of all time and I own almost everything he ever did, but he also frustrates me at times by being so reactionary. I never liked OHIO and find his current politics a little tired. I don't care what his views are whether he is playing Farm Aid or singing "let's impeach the pres" I really don't care. If half of his biography Shakey was accurate the guy spent 1/2 of his life in a drugged out/drunken haze and lives on a cozy ranch. He can't and won't ever teach me a single thing about life on a socio political level. That being said he has written and recorded some of the most beautiful stuff ever . So I guess I'm saying stick to the love songs and i'm annoyed right now.

  10. i doubt the CD version of the archives will be $300. guessing like $100-150

    you know what I meant

I'm just saying that Neil could stand up and not be mr. hypocrite celeb and say either of two things

    1. Hey I know times are hard, but this (Archives) is something I worked hard on, and if people want it bad enough they find a way and work hard themselves to make the dough (which would be nice and refreshing)

    OR

    2. Hey I know times are hard, and since I'm singing about corporate greed and the Bush administration's failed policies that I believe impacted our economy and is effecting each and every one of us, I feel that releasing the Archives at this time with a high dollar sign would be kind of crappy of me. So it will be discounted and available for $50 because I want to spread some happiness. (this would be stupid and lame, but at least it would make his preaching more tolerable)

  11. Kind of don't know what to say about this!

I did enjoy the Chorus where he sang "there is a bailout coming but it is not for you, so you won't be able to afford the Archives, which are overdue"

    Cool line

Cmon Neil, I love your music, but sometimes you are guilty of two music pet peeves of mine.

    1. Don't mix music and politics in an overt fashion (I know I'm alone here, but I hate this) Naturally Living With War was a tough listen

    2. Don't charge 300 bucks for a box set that I feel I HAVE to have and can't live without.

  12. Out of everything he says he is going to quit, I hope he just says enough with the blogging. We all haver our issues and unfortunately Ryan sometimes is too out front or public about his. We all struggle with indecision, fear, doubt, medical issues, psychological issues, relationships, etc., but Ryan (who is partially a semi famous celeb) makes this public, further giving ammunition for the haters. I frankly love almost everything he produces musically and try not to analyze his personal life, because for me that usually hurts my attraction to most musicians. Anyway, just don't canx the upcoming shows, I've already been burned by Ryan live a few times (canx a show to play SAT NIGHT LIVE, and a drunken/drugged out performance on the Rock n Roll/ Love is Hell tour)

  13. Wilco becomes a big part of the plot during an episode on season 3 disc one of how I met your mother, including playing passenger side toward the end of the episode. I'm sure this has been covered but i can never get the search/thread function to work. Anyway.

  14. You don't like "Crime in the City"? I like the Horsed-up version on Weld better, but I'd still put the acoustic version above something, like, say, "Magick." ;)

Ok, now I knew that bringing up my love for Ryan Adams in the same breath of dissing anything Neil Young has done would raise some eyebrows, but I'm going to politely disagree that "Crime In the City" holds a candle to "Magick". Is "Magick" a relatively thoughtless throw away rock song? yes! Do I keep going back to it, and does it make me feel good/funny/etc Yes! Ryan hit the nail on the head, he wrote a mindless rock song that rocks. Has he written more high brow songs in his life? Yes, but that is not what "Magick" or "Halloween Head" or most of Rock and Roll (the album) are. When he just wants to write a simple rock song he can, and does very well.

now "Crime in the City" is some socio political statment that has no melody, nothing musically to hang your cap on and politically conscious lyrics that make me cringe. I will never listen to that song again. It made me feel nothing, except sad for Neil having written it. Just because a song tackles an important issue or heavy issue doesn't make it a good song. I wish neil would just write 1000 songs about love, for example "Good to See You" off of Silver and Gold is outstanding. Ok he has written 1000 songs about love, I'll take 1000 more.

Now you can tear me apart.

  15. I just want to say that I'm sure when it comes to some of my favorite musicians I can struggle for objectivity. For example, I've heard few Ryan Adams songs that I don't like and don't understand the "he needs an editor" crap. That being said, I think I'm a pretty objective Neil Young fan, and if you listen to an album like Freedom and you hear a bunch of quality songs, well then we are never going to agree (not that you care). I must say that post 1980 Neil Young can give me the cringe effect quite a bit. Like when you go out an buy Prairie Wind and you are digging it, and you think man he has done it, and then all of sudden he qoutes Chris Rock in a song. Ouch. I just think he has struggled for consistency in the last 25 years and at times has created some truly unlistenable songs during this time. If he wasn't Neil Young some of these albums would be laughed at. Listen to the second song on Freedom for example!

  16. Say what you will, but I love Mirror Ball.

I so wanted to love Mirrorball. At the time I was a huge PJ fan and loved the first single, but that record kind of drones on for me. Same with Greendale and alot of his more rocking stuff in the past 10-15 years seems kind of lazy. The first few times with Crazy Horse was raw and fresh, now it just seems tired.
