  1. Who said, "Beautiful" in that funny voice?

Pretty sure that was Jeff, and more sure that was a Lawrence Welk impression.

(I'm sure even he has a Wiki page.)

He's a bandleader from another time. Used to have a show on Saturday evenings for the older folks (my grandmother watched it), and that's what he'd say on the show, coming out of a performance by some of his musicians ... "Beautiful, beautiful ....".

    I feel old now.

  2. Got an e-mail about Crowded House's upcoming tour dates, and this jumped out at me:

"Support on the European dates except Spain will be Cherry Ghost. All tickets go on sale June 29 except Amsterdam and Oslo June 30"

Huh, and here's confirmation on their Wikipedia page, because if it's on the internet it must be true.

A band named after a 3-year-old Wilco song opening up for another favorite that broke up 11 years ago ... weird.

I could see Neil Finn sitting in and enjoying a Spiders or something similar. He's known for his songs but enjoys the occasional rude solo. Maybe the folks at ACL this year will get so lucky.

  3. FYI - Columbia, MD is the world's most sterile town in America. You'll see. It was designed that way. I call it the "Biggest Industrial Park in the World"

As far as cool places to go, I would say that the mall is your best bet unless you want to drive from the bar to Merriweather. If you don't mind driving, I would have to say the best bar in Columbia is Nottingham's. It's not too far.

According to the people who live here, I just work here, you can:

Go to the Champs bar in the mall. Very close and is walking distance.

Didn't Edward Norton, Jr.'s father (um, I guess that'd be Edward Norton, Sr.) have a hand in designing that community? Amazing the random crap that can stick in the brain sometimes.

Sounds like it was a great show. Given how fun it is to get from here up and across the DC area after work, I rolled the dice that they'll come back around the east coast later this year, at least NoVA or Richmond if not Charlottesville. I think Jeff had a good time at his solo gig, maybe he'll bring the whole band.

Anyway, congratulations to all the winners and folks who got to go. And thanks to the tapers of this Charlotte show ... very nice!

  4. Same here, CD+DVD and no extras.

Seems as though the CD/DVD combo has no enhanced file, whereas if you buy just the CD, it does. Strikes me as being a little odd. Now who said something about hooking us up with the extras.mov? :shifty

Seriously, I'm disappointed with this development.

I have the deluxe, and the CD "extras" file got me to the little window where I could open up the player for the webcast, but that is all. I wonder if the .mov file is more a .mov file in name than in actual movie-ness.

Based on the wording in the official announcement (words like "updated" and "downloads"), I assume that there may be a way to use the disc to access goodies they put forth later. But that's just me.

  5. Who gives fuck? They are supposed to be playing SBS stuff and their more latest stuff. Though I do love that era, but I always look towards the future. But basically, who cares they did not play anything from that era because they did a duet with Bill Fay. The man is so awesome, and I never would have thought for this to happen.

Lighten up, Francis. It was an observation, not a complaint. From a setlist perspective, it marks a new era in a way. I'm sure Jeff is happy to have enough later material to be able to do that when he wants. Just a little observation about live performances, not meant in any way as an offense to Mr. Fay.

  6. So...has anyone who didn't choose express shipping gotten anything yet?

I live about 20 minutes from the MusicToday warehouse in Crozet. I got an e-mail Friday reporting it had shipped (USPS). I still have not received anything. All I ordered was the CD/DVD.

From now on, I'll preorder nothing from them unless there are extra goodies involved.

Does the flaming-bag-of-dog-poop trick still work?

  7. So I tried to write a conventional review for this disc. Didn't really work. I wound up primarily looking at the album through the lens of selecting the first track. Then, I also made a list of a dozen favorite moments on the disc (I do this Dozens thing, but usually with songs from artists' catalogs).

Anyway, here's the page, where you can choose either the "Sky Blue Aside" part or the Dozens part, or both. Or neither.

    anyway,

Great. Went ahead and did a fresh link in case it gets popular and the first one does expire:

Sorry about that -- can't be expired yet, hopefully that'll clear up. Lemme if know if it doesn't. In the meantime, well done! ...

  10. The Lonely 1 as played on Morning Becomes Eclectic, and then as torrented superquickly on Dime by Nibbler. A couple of nice comments by Tim as intro, too.

Extra fruit cup, of course, for everyone who knows the one degree of separation between the coverer and the coveree. (Shake it, shake it, coveree ... nevermind.)

  11. An article this week in the Austin Chronicle reads:

The "Miracle Man," Elvis Costello, prefers a vanilla ice cream bar dipped in rich, dark chocolate with almonds. Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie has a sweet tooth for Bomb Pops, while Wilco songsmith Jeff Tweedy goes for shark-shaped Great White Lemon Ice Popsicles. Jim James's craving for fudge bars links back to My Morning Jacket's Chocolate and Ice EP. Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, and the Dears all favor organic flavors of Julie's renowned ice cream bars.

That's the only mention of Jeff, but it's a fun one, and you can find the full article here

Excellent article! That is a lot of work for something that makes a lot of sense spiritually but next to no sense financially. If enough people made enough of that kind of nonsense, the world would be a much more sensible place.

    Thanks for sharing.

  12. thought you'd like to see this:

    thanks for all the suggestions

Tweedy is easily the only member of the top 35 who is younger than 40, and generally MUCH younger than the names around him. Nice compliment.

Anyway, greetings fellow serious Springsteen fan. Unless you just hate Tweedy's voice, I would proceed to YHF after Being There. It's pretty much impossible to judge Wilco on just one disc anymore (unless, like i said, his singing bugs the crap out of you) because the sound has changed so much. Much is made about the effects and the longer tracks (which are beautiful in their own way) on YHF, but I dare anybody to find another album with as much "catchy" in the freaking 7-9 slots. That album has hooks to spare; it just isn't *all* about the hooks.

After that, I would proceed directly to Kicking Television since you obviously appreciate good live music, and if you get this far and are still interested then you will dig the current live lineup.

Come to think of it, if you enjoyed the Seeger Sessions and Tom Joad type material, then you'll be in good shape for the more countryish tracks on Being There. Both guys have work directly connected to Guthrie and a sizable appreciation for earlier American music, for sure. Try to find a recording of Wilco covering "When The Roses Bloom Again"; it's a beautiful older cover that is the type of thing one can imagine Bruce doing, too.

Then again, if you can't stand that part of Springsteen's stuff, there's plenty of rock in BT and YHF, too ... some of it's just a bit weirder than Bruce would ever get. Thus ends the run-on post. Enjoy!

  13. And what is a cherry ghost? One of the most delectable lines I've ever heard.

Sweet, but melts away eventually, like, you know, a sno-cone. Doesn't a "cherry ghost" sound like some treat you'd buy for $0.75 off the ice-cream truck, or at the snack bar at the pool, or on the landing in the summer? In fact, it is my understanding that the working lyric spurred quite a flavor debate within the band and referred originally to a "grape goblin." Or was it "blue ghoul"? Or an orange ... oh, nevermind.
