  1. thats what i figured. interesting idea but i think it does a disservice to some of the quieter songs. im sure id like some of them more if they were scattered between the more interesting tracks. as it is, i get bored towards the end of this album. dont see myself playign disc two a whole lot unfortunately.

def enjoy the first half of this though.

  2. theres a bunch of good songs on here but it seems very poorly sequenced, especially towards the end. ill withhold judgment cuz maybe it has to do with the split between two discs, but right now it seems like this is an insanely frontloaded album. i see myself playing disc 1 a lot more than 2.

and the last song really bugs me. jeff has always been great at ending albums but this closing track just falls flat for me. its such an emotionally heavy album, i feel like it should come to a satisfying conclusion but it really doesnt for me.

  3. pat was only at the dc show. they said he flew in from chicago right before the 930 club show. hes playing a solo opening set at iota in arlington tonight apparently.  i wont be there though cuz i havent been too impressed by pats own stuff

he was cool at the big star show. played a lot of guitar, sang a few songs (including feel and i am the cosmos) and looked happy to be involved.

thats all ive got, but the big star show was an incredible evening of music. it was nice to see pat but his presence there didnt really mean anything to me to be honest. part of my skepticism regarding tribute shows is the fact that people will apparently go just to see the performers, when its really about the music theyre performing. it can make for a weird crowd. that aside, it was a wonderful evening

though i will add that as someone who digs pat in wilco but finds the autumn defense dreadfully boring, his vocals were quite fitting last night

  4. at this point i dont get why fans are still clamoring for a zeppelin tour

plants made it very clear hes not interested in playing led zeppelin shows so why people still seem so eager to spend hundreds of dollars to see him mail it in is beyond me

  5. gaga

    girls

    moonlight

    gimme fiction

    sneaks

    transference

    telephono

good band. telephonos the only one id call mediocre.

havent heard any of the new songs yet cuz ive gotten kinda tired of hering half an album before it comes out. spoon's as reliable as they come imo so i dont feel i need to hear anything ahead of time to buy it

  6. I'm also holding out hope that they might be selling the new CD at these shows! ...and STILL no word on a release date or anything for the new album, with the first show of the tour tomorrow night too!! Weird...

Anyone who's going to Detroit will hopefully report back on the new solo CD being for sale, or not...

the press release said sept 16. i imagine theres no chance theyll sell it this early

  7. i kinda agree

i still would have bought tickets to the dc show but im a bit disappointed that its not jeff solo. im obviously intrigued by the new lineup and i dont regret my purchase at all, just would have been nice to know exactly what i was buying tickets for when i bought them.

minor qualm i guess but its an odd way to promote shows imo.

  8. Super Furry Animals? i saw them in 2009 last. kind of a dismal show, to be honest. was hoping for a lot more.

yup. we've discussed this before. iirc you saw them at atp, which by all indications ive seen was not a good performance. i saw them that weekend at their own gig and it was great. they havent toured or recorded since then, so perhaps some interband tension had come up.

  9. oh yeah minor threat has zero chance. rightfully so. i play that stuff a lot but seeing 40 year old ian do it would be embarrassing, and he knows it. one of few musicians you can count on to only reunite for the right reasons

the s-k girls have said theyd reform within the next five years. think that was maybe two years ago. they all seem open to it (and with wild flag out of the way, carrie'd need an outlet for her songs) so i think you can safely assume its coming. portlandia's inexplicable popularity is certainly an obstacle though

another band that never officially called it quits that im waiting on is sfa. they keep giving the safe answer of well be back eventually but its been half a decade since they put an album out and theyve all got solo projects going at the moment, so who knows.

  10. dont agree with gnr honestly. i dont think itll happen soon, but i think well see something very close to an original lineup tour eventually. theres huge money involved, and weve already seen a few ex-members make amends with axl. just seems like a matter of time before it all falls into place

cant argue with the rest though. saw a commenter mention fugazi, but does it count if they never broke up? id welcome a fugazi reunion (the arguments my favorite of theirs) but how could ian balance it with all his ethical stands? imagine fugazi reunion shows in church basements for $5

on the indefinite hiatus note, sleater-kinney needs to return asap. i liked wild flag and corins solo work a lot, but portlandia is terrible and carrie should make music again

  11. edit -

I wonder if he mentioned Dale Crover

he had very kind words for dale, and all nirvanas previous drummers, including an acknowledgement that chad channing wrote some of the drum parts dave played on nevermind. he seemed to be deliberately saying chads name a bunch and pointing him out in the crowd, which i assume was a fuck you to the hall for not inducting him as well. he also dropped a slayer reference and thanked a bunch of dc hardcore folks. krist novoselic also thanked buzzo for turning him and kurt on to punk rock. stereogum posted a great picture of dan peters, dale crover, chad channing and jack endino at the ceremony but i cant find the link at the moment

ive only seen short clips of each singer but i love the choices. kurt always said he thought the future of punk rock was women so picking four generations like that was brilliant. a lot of people are gonna bitch and moan about their idea of "what kurt would have wanted," but im gonna defer to the people who knew him and say they did a great job honoring him last night

also nice to see courtney and dave/krist bury the hatchet for a bit.

  12. Kimmel and Fallon are ushering in a different approach to late night. Much more fun than what Letterman or Leno have been doing.

Any rumors who will replace. It can't be the guy that comes on after Letterman, can it? :/

not a ferguson fan? i dont see him taking the gig but i think hes fantastic

i keep seeing stewart/colbert as the leading guesses to take over, but i dont think itll happen. theyve both got great gigs and to take over for dave theyd have to pretty much leave their political characters behind to just be a regular comedian. i think either one would be great, i just dont see them wanting to do it

  13. yes

The hall of fame announced Tuesday that "The Boss" will fittingly induct and perform with his loyal E Street Band

pretty intrigued by stipe inducting nirvana, as well as what the nirvana performance part will consist of

also questlove. im not a hall and oates fan but hearing him talk about music is always a treat

  14. doing a stooges marathon right now

    fun house>raw power>s/t

    all are absolute classics though

you could make a serious argument that the stooges were the best (or at least most important) american band of all time

totally bummed ill never get to see them now (was holding out hope for one more round of us dates, but that wont be happening now, and any stooges tour with no asheton brother wouldnt be legit)
