The Beatles: A fascinating, 10-minute 'Revolution' mysteriously appears
Feb 23, 2009, 06:03 PM | by Rob Brunner
Over the past couple of days, Beatles fanatics have been chattering about an amazing outtake that recently leaked onto the Internet. The 10-minute-plus recording of "Revolution" (embedded below) offers a fascinating look at the wildly ambitious plans the band originally had for the song, eventually included in much shorter form on The White Album. "As someone who's heard, I'd say, 99.8 percent of the Beatles music that has leaked onto bootleg, this is really interesting," says Richie Unterberger, author of the book The Unreleased Beatles.
According to Mark Lewisohn's definitive book The Beatles: Recording Sessions, this unheard version was recorded on May 30 and 31, and June 4, 1968. Strangely, John Lennon recorded his vocals while lying flat on his back, hoping it might make his voice sound different. The song starts off very similar to the version that was eventually released, but halfway through it veers off in all sorts of strange directions, adding whooping vocals, tape loops, and other sonic embellishments. It sounded great, as you can hear above, but there was a problem: The band quickly realized "Revolution" had potential as a single, and a 10-minute running time would make that impossible. The solution? They chopped it in half. The first part became "Revolution 1," while the rest served as the basis for the "Revolution 9," an experimental noise-fest that has long baffled many fans. Mystery solved! When you listen to this complete 10-minute version, suddenly "Revolution 9" starts to make a lot more sense.

How the track leaked after all this time is hard to say. It's possible -- but highly improbable -- that one of the few people with access to EMI's vaults swiped it. More likely, it came (indirectly) from Lennon himself. According to Lewisohn's book, Lennon took a copy of the song home with him from the studio after the June 4 session. It's possible that the recording sat in his apartment in the Dakota for years, and somebody -- the cable guy? The dog walker? -- recently stole it. "That's not so far-fetched," says Unterberger. "John kept a lot of his tapes. Who knows if it was someone rummaging through Yoko's stuff in an unauthorized capacity, but it's possible that she still had that tape." But whatever happened, we're grateful. It's not often that completely new Beatles material trickles out, and we're eager for anything that helps solve the endless mysteries of the band's ever-elusive genius.
So what do you think? Is this better than the two songs it became, "Revolution 1" and "Revolution 9"? Or would you rather keep listening to the originals?

Sometimes listening on YouTube sucks!

Now this thread is waaaay off topic.

That being said, I cannot believe how unfortunate it is that the Ashes of American Flags / Heavy Metal Drummer transition is completely lost due to having to switch records. What a buzzkill!
I was just listening to this today and thought the same thing. Ha.
Wilco on vinyl is something that everyone should experience. Just beautiful...

I though he looked like he was going to cry. He kind of quivered a few times. At least that's the way I saw it.

Just to add a few points, didn't it seem like Jack was about to cry through the whole thing? Do you think there is more going on with Jack and Meg then we know? Conan was acting like he got Led Zeppelin back together. I thought the performance was below average but it seemed like something else was going on there.
Also, m_thomp, Jack White is still extremely relevant. The Raconteurs are one of the best rock bands out there right now. The fact that a side project can be that amazing shows just how talented JW is. I could go on and on over this topic but I won't. I was actually one of those people who didn't get Jack for a very long time. When Rolling Stone put out that list of the 100 greatest guitarists and he was 16 it made me want to punch something. But after really delving into his catalog and hearing some of the things he does, it is undeniable that he's one of the best.
Here are just a few of my favorite YT pieces to show Jack's power:
The Raconteurs performing Blue Veins at Bonnaroo 2008. Wait till the 5min mark. I was about 10 feet awayfrom the stage during this performance and you could just see how into the show Jack was.

A great Ball and a Biscuit

This was a Coke ad that was released in Australia that only had a few airings. Jack was given cart blanche and he wrote and scored the whole thing himself. Actually one of my favorite things he's done.
And for relevance sake, the Denial Twist video with Conan. very cool.

I was just kidding. Just trying to scam 50+ DVDs
-
I think someday I am going to copy all the 50 + dvds of Wilco/UT/Jeff shows I have and send them to you.
I...um....don't know how to use torrents either.
::cries and cries until 50+ DVDs arrive at my doorstep::

I'll be there!

One last note. Here are the pics I took that night. These I'm pretty sure I can share. Enjoy.

he's respecting the band's stance on video recordings.
And I got about a dozen copyright infringement e-mails from Warner Brothers

Alright all, point taken. The Video's are off YouTube.
Never was it my intention to rip anyone off. Just wanted to share.
Sorry Jeff.

On Friday, were you in the second row of the first non-gold section? Kinda left of center, dark toboggan, beard?
Yes, did I bother you? I very much hope not. My intention is always to pass stuff along to those who couldn't be there. If I took anything away from anyone's time I would feel very bad.

This was my first JT show at the Vic and I had a blast. Great show, fun crowd, EXCEPT all the junior film-makers with their most annoying cheap digital cameras and cell phones shooting video. I found this most annoying and find it even more annoying to see this behavior being rewarded here on VC. I sat behind an idiot who shot several songs wth his camera in video mode.
Nothing like paying $100 for a seat, waiting for 2 hours in freezing temps, only to have an obstructed view seat. The obstruction : the LCD on the camera belonging to the hipster dufus sitting in front of you.
I can understand what you mean about people and their cameras. When I shoot stills or video I hold the camera as close to my body as I can and make sure that it's in front of me so as not to ruin the view of anyone behind me. I'm always very conscious of the people around me. I sat both nights with people I didn't know who waited all day in line for the show. None of them seemed to be bothered by what I was doing and I offered to pass on what I took and we exchanged e-mails and they seemed very happy. That is all.

Thanks again for buying a tix from us! I managed to sell the rest outside, so overall, apart from my husband being a bit ill, we had a great Valentine's day show!!!
No, thank you!!! What a fantastic night.
Sorry to hear he wasn't feeling well. I guess a little injection of Jeff is always the best medicine.

Can someone please repeat what Jeff said about Lounge Ax.My favorite place to catch a show ,when it was open...boo...hoo
He basically said that Sue worked there and was the owner and he used to go down there and see her a lot. On one occasion he was walking down and wanted some pie and therefore wrote Pecan Pie. He joked about how people have probably been trying to find a deeper meaning in that song but it really is just about wanting some pie. Funny little moment.

Did anyone notice the two mics on each side of the stage? Would these be used to do a matrix with the soundboard? I'm a idiot when it comes to that kind of stuff.
-
All of them are up above now. Enjoy.
I also went tonight and got a bunch. Will post in the other thread tomorrow. Time to go out get drunk and find a Valentine....
Not very romantic is it
Also, I don't have the whole show. Just tried to get as much as I could and still enjoy just being there. Trying to hold a tiny camera very still when you want to groove is very hard at times. But reliving the show days and years after is worth it.
These two show were my first Tweedy shows and they were amazing. Loved every second.
-
Thanks for putting these up... great fun... Did you find a home for your tix? There were people looking last night so hopefully you can find a home for them
I'm actually looking for a ticket but I think I found one. Still waiting on a call. I heading over there no matter what so I should be able to find one. I live just a few blocks down from the Vic. I didn't want to spend that much for both shows but after last night I have to go tonight.
-
I'll take one. Give me a call and I'll meet you before the show. I plan on being in line about 6pm.
