  1. That is cool, I guess I'm just not in the club who thinks he has been making crappy albums for the past 5 years. Love Is Hell I believe is his high water mark and 29 is a hauntingly beautiful record. Cold Roses is a sprawling epic record and Easy Tiger contains a mix of strong songs similar but not as good as Demolition. Cardinology was the first to have a few songs that I didn't care for, but man I wore that record out and I just connect with it.

I don't know, I just don't see the criticisms as being valid. the guy, despite numerous extracurricular/personality based issues that may be valid, is a damn good songwriter. The more I hear both released and unreleased material further makes me feel this way.

    Yep, this!

Some of the unreleased stuff is the best stuff...48 Hours is a classic country record and still gets repeated spins at my place..

  2. Welcome Twigboy, sounds like you are in the right place. There are a lot of us in bands around these parts so looking forward to hearing what you got going on!

Oh well, seeing as you ask :)

I'll shamelessly plug more once I'm settled in, thankyou ;)

  3. Well it is obviously an homage.

And, it led me to start listening to the rest of the incredible "All Things Must Pass," which I'd never really listened to before.

Result: George is my new favorite Beatle.

    So, thanks Wilco. Again.

Seconded! 'Twas the acoustic While My Guitar Gently Weeps on Anthology that turned my ears to more of George's stuff.

  4. So much I still have to get me hands on but from what I have, the Phoenix record really stands out, as does Ben Kweller. He's been hinting at a record like that for a while now and so glad to see it come off (to these ears at least) so well...even if Hurtin' You intro does sound like New Kid In Town ;)

Only just started listening to new Felice Brothers but it's already up there.

Andrew Bird blows hot and cold for me. Don't know why, p'raps it depends on mood but I'm pleased to say at last listen it was hot. P'raps I just spun it a bit too much at the start I dunno...

Grizzly Bear are a strange bunch for me too. Like some have said, I can like what they do but it doesn't really do anything for me. I can see it just collecting dust to be honest.

Back on more positive vibes, TV On The Radio cracked it again with Dear Science and if we can include compilations, then Dark Was The Night is album of the year contender.

I've given Wilco (The Album) a rest till the real thing arrives but for me it's a mix of all albums to date which, while being a good thing, for me it makes for a strange running order.

Finally, my most played album of the year so far....

A little out of place given it was a 2008 album but I only got me hands on it this year after me father did some hunting around, Gin Club's Junk. Don't know if anyone knows Gin Club but they were new to me. An aussie band that me parents discovered when they went to Brisbane (see also The Panics). Brought back an album that I thought was OK but p'raps just a pastiche of a few things but Junk has blown me away, I would heartily recommend it!

There's plenty more that's caught the ear but this post is long enough as is....I do have a habit of going overboard, sorry! :)

  5. Currently got Born To Run racing round me brain at the moment having just seen a poster with 'Tramps Like Us' plastered across it in preparation for a tribute night tonight...

Anyway, that aside, this morning I have been mostly listening to Okkervil River 'Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See'...damn, I wish this computer was better so I could siplay the album cover, I love it.

  6. That's my home, south of the murky river...

  7. :thumbup No worries! I'm sure there are still plenty of people around who'd be willing to discuss this some more.

    Like me! :)

I heard it straight off and saw it as a doffing of the cap...I'm by no means an authortative voice on such matters but I do think you can tell when something's ripped off or is done as a nod...

Listen to Sleepy Jackson's 'Good Dancers' and you'll get the same vibe. In fact, listen to their/his 'Lovers' album...full of nicks & nods. In a good way......to my ears at least!

  12. First post...I hope I'm in the right neck of the woods?

I've lurked around these parts for a while now but have been (frustratingly!) unable to join any conversations due to restrictions on work PC and limited time on the home PC. The work problem is now sorted [bar the wandering eyes ;) ], home is a coupla months off..

It's been a while since I've posted in any kinda forum so not sure what the etiquette is around here, but I feel compelled to join in where time will allow - you look like a friendly and informative bunch. Already learned a few things from lurking, I hope I can bring summink to the table in return.

You will hear about the band I play in if there is a time & place but that's for another time.

First off, I just thought I'd say hello before I start diving into conversation and lists...so here am I, long term fan, recent obsessive...been playing catch up ever since Mermaid Avenue (massive Billy Bragg fan) & Summerteeth, been obsessing since I saw IATTBYH about 4 years ago. Still to see them in the flesh, looking to rectify that in August!

    Cheers

    Joe.
