  1. For all the folks that wish that they'd change it up some more, let's put the new songs aside, since they are touring on a new album. Let's also put aside the rarer tunes that they played in Brooklyn. Like Cant Stand It and I'm Always in Love. Let's focus on the "standards" that always get played. If they swapped out Shot in the Arm or You Are My Face or Heavy Metal Drummer for something like Shouldn't Be Ashamed or Radio Cure, sure the message board folks (and certainly me) would be thrilled. But how many of the more casual fans of the 12,000 in Brooklyn would be disappointed? How many folks would be disappointed that they went to see Wilco for the first time and didn't get to hear HMD?

We have these discussions all the time and we've certainly beaten the issue in the ground. I agree with the folks that want more variety. I just think it's unrealistic. There are more casual fans at these shows than hardcore fans (and the website requests were an attempt to GIVE the hardcore fans want they want (and they got it)).

  2. I am trying to apply artwork from google to a version of the Milwaukee show that I have. I have been trying to click "get info," and then editing all items and uploading the image from my documents, yet the artwork does not show up. In addition, I saw that when i looked at the track info individually, the option to edit artwork was grey and could not be accessed. What do I do?

Also: What does converting them to AAC do?

  3. its probably my cheap ass speakers, but the drums sound horrible at the start of You Never Know on my vinyl. Really muffled. I need some better speakers.

It's the speakers for sure.. that drum part is even hard on my car speakers. If you have a Crosley player, then you know that the cheaper ones tend to fuzz out even at moderate volumes

  4. It took a bit of snooping, but I loaded

in QuickTime Player and it showed what appeared to be a variable bit rate. It never dipped much below 128kb/s, so that's probably what it is.

Go for it man! I read your other post.. Any chance you could put it up elsewhere than Dime?

  5. The only upside of this is that when they are played, it is a very special and unique occasion...I can see it being like Sky Blue Sky or Shake It Off. Country Disappeared is a quality song. I see Solitaire being played at the solo shows.... (duh moment of the day) hhaha

  6. Exactly.

Getting a 180 gram album is no guarantee that it won't have some imperfections. Remember this is not all that precise, it is a piece of plastic with some grooves cut in it, which is manufactured by pressing some molten plastic in a die. One would hope that all record companies are being careful, but that has never been the case, not in the old days and not now, particularly when demand is up and the number of available pressers is limited. So while everyone extolls the virtues of vinyl sound, to those raised on digital there is going to be some noise at some point, unless you have a perfect record and a perfect turntable and a really highend system. This is why I said relax about this.

I have mentioned this before but Laurie's Planet of Sound here in Chicago carries alot of new vinyl and when you buy an album you can not bring it back. In the old days you could return vinyl records, but that was because all records were vinyl and companies made lots of them. Now they don't.

Good to know... Like I said, the noise doesn't distort from the awesome and warm sound quality of the record.. I was just wondering if the subtle crackling throughout was caused by my carelessness with the sleeve. However, I see now that this is simply a normal part of the sound of records.

  7. I used to use the thingy (a small, circular dense brush, with some special fluid) that Discwasher used to sell with the record cleaning thingy and other special fluid.

How exactly do I go about the cleaning? I am unfamiliar with the parts of the stylus, and the needle just seems so small.. What parts need to be cleaned?

  8. Hello all,

I am still new to vinyl and such, and I was wondering what is the best way to clean a stylus needle.. I do not have the specialized brush, but I have heard that there are more accessible, home-made alternatives.

    1. Does the q-tip and alcohol method seem safe?

    2. My main question is how to actually go about cleaning it.. I have done some reading, but the textual instructions have thus far proven confusing, especially because I am rather unfamiliar with the various parts. I am confused, where do I clean? On the needle itself? It seems so small...

  9. There shouldn't be much crackling with a new piece of 180-gram audiophile vinyl, but if it's been damaged, then it's not unreasonable that you'd hear crackling. But my guess is that it's not a vinyl issue.

It could be your turntable. The most likely non-vinyl culprit is probably your stylus. It could be dirty or damaged. There could also be a loose connection somewhere, or any number of other issues. It's pretty finicky technology.

If you decide to clean your stylus, do some reading first -- it's not necessarily as simple a process as you might think, and they make a special brush for that task.

It could also be static. Personally, I don't think I've ever had many problems with static -- but you can get an anti-static gun that supposedly eliminates it (not cheap, unfortunately). There's probably a less expensive, homebrew way to do it, but I don't know what it is.

It isn't super noticeable, and it isn't all the time, but between songs I definitely hear it, and it is more prominent during quiet songs.. Not super loud and noticeable, just when I listen closely

  10. Just play your album and enjoy it. Don't freak out.

As far as being old, considering this is 100 year old technology I don't think there is anything new to be said about record maintenance. All LPs experience some wear over time and all pick up small dings and pops that are somewhat unavoidable. Don't sweat it too badly. Don't touch the grooves if you can help it and clean it as needed and it will play for a long time.

Ok, I got the cleaning kit, and there is no more dust at all.. However, subtle crackling continues throughout.. it isn't very noticeable, and is audible more during quiet parts/up close to the turntable. Is this crackling normal?

  11. 1. I made the mistake of putting my copy of W(TA) in the actual jacket, without the paper sleeve... it was difficult to remove, and now the surface of the LP has many of what appear to be scuff marks... is this harmful, and is my LP ruined?

    2. I have a lot of dust building up, how can I prevent this?

  12. Why don't you go out and buy it? Then, sell your Nonesuch copy to someone, or better yet, call/cancel/demand a refund due to your less than satisfactory buying experience.

    This is what I did

  13. Hey all, a few people were kind enough to send me Dark Neon. Sorry if it sounded like I was ranting I was just having trouble acquiring this (Mike I think it said your account couldn't accepting new messages when I tried to PM you yesterday for some reason I think. It was strange). Aaaaanywhoo I absolutely agree that people should be reading for who is offering to share then links and then PM them.

IT DOES NO GOOD TO JUST RANDOMLY PLEAD FOR PM'S ON A BOARD!

Just find the source. If they are kind enough to share a link then other users should respect that and try to help them out by sending a PM directly to that person.

You say that now that you got what you wanted, but earlier you were complaining that no one would pass on a file that surely involves illegally sharing a traceable itunes file. I'm sorry, but it is just easy to forget that someone has to upload that and risk being in trouble, and it is easy to complain when you are merely downloading the track.. it is easy to fall into this selfishness... I realize that you shared unlikely japan, but that wasn't risky in the same way...Also, the person who originally uploaded actually purchased the track... which is unfortunately the only way to acquire it, but after spending 10 dollars, to get this bonus track, that person is free to keep the track to themselves if they want.. Just remember that you all legally should not have this track, and are lucky to be getting it for free.

cmon... it will be available to everyone soon enough
