  1. downloading this now, very excited. actually had Some Cities blaring this morning as I was making breakfast...I lost that CD a few years ago and only just got it back in the last month, and I'm enjoying it way more now than I did back when it was originally released. High expectations for this one, and especially excited because I'll be seeing them live in May...

you won't be dissapointed. maybe i am just excited by the newness of it, but my initial impression is that it's by far their best one.

  2. i find it hard to consider "Wilco, the Song" more than a throwaway song, but, who knows, maybe the album version will be interesting. the version i heard on Colbert just sounds like some theme song to a sitcom. not that crazy about Sunny Feeling either. One Wing is great though. those are the only three new songs i've heard.

  3. awesome...pretty big tour this time. i hope they achieve some modest level of success here. and perhaps be as big as Elbow in their home country.

    thanks for posting solace

there are promos of the album out there, but no leak just yet.

  4. The only bad album since '91 is Atomic Bomb. In fact, I would take Zooropa over Achtung Baby and Pop is excellent.

Pop is a great album, very underrated.

I agree with most people that Achtung is the pinnacle of their career, but to dismiss everything after probably means you were not a fan anyway.

  5. i don't frequent this part of the forum unless there is a new album out...

can someone confirm the new songs they've played thus far? I've heard One Wing and Wilco Song on youtube. I really like One Wing, but Wilco Song seems like a joke and a little light. Is that a serious contender for the new album?

  6. I was under-whelmed with the Lettermen performance. I don't think the sound had anything to do with it. Just not that good of a song. Weird vocal delivery.

It's a little sad to me. I feel like Bono and U2 still think their hot shit, and sadly their not. They're still good. They're still talented. They still have their moments on each record. But when he struts around the stage now, it's just not the same. And mostly it's because the new stuff is lame....when compared to the incredible songs they've put out before.

It's not really their fault....it'd be very hard for them to makes songs that would give me goosebumps like "Streets Have No Name" or "New Year's Day" or "The Fly" or "Pride" or "Staring At The Sun" or "MOFO" or "I Will Follow" or "All I Want Is You" or "One"...etc...

Last night was sad because I could see Bono's intensity and he WANTED his new song and performance to be magical but it wasn't. Yeah, he got the crowd to stand up, and with his charisma he was able to half-way make me think I was seeing something special. But I felt that I wasn't.

good post. i see your point.

i like the new album, there are some great songs on it, but i just get the feeling that there are always looking to be the "biggest" band in the world, and this attitude is mostly attributed to Bono. he seems to worry too much about competing with those other supposed big (and younger) bands, Coldplay, Killers, Kings of Leon. it hurts the music. They are definitly more adventurous on this album than the past two, but not nearly enough as had been previously reported. maybe they'll come to the point when they'll put out music just for the sake of art, and not give a crap what everyone thinks....like they did in the 90's. supposedly, they are releasing a more "ambient" and meditative album in late 2009. we'll see.

  7. Love the song, but not the performance. The guitar sounded like it was coming out of a hole. And not in a good way. I hope they do an interview segment with each of the members of the band before the week's over.

i find that TV performances, especially on the late night talk shows, always have shitty sound.

  8. hey, i know i'm often a smartass, i don't try and hide it ;)

    no hard feelings.

i discover a lot of new bands on this forum. i think i first found out about Andrew Bird from one of your posts...

anyway, i just felt bad for the guy. i don't think NLOTH is a masterpiece, but it has some great songs and is respectable for U2 at this late stage in their career.

  9. Hey,

I don't know what the "lol" was referring to, but who knows. A few posts back I saw Solace pick out the 2nd-4th singles. So I'm assuming he's also a U2 fan.

I think he was laughing at my saying Bono was actually singing. Either way all is cool.

    Kristofor

i don't think he was laughing with you, man, but at you...whatever...you'll find that you can't really be enthusiastic about certain bands on this messageboard. if it's not M. Ward, Bon Iver, Andrew Bird etc., don't bother posting.

  10. My first thought is that the songs seem to start out nice, and then go off into something else. I was really actually getting into No Line On The Horizon, and then the music changed course about 3 times, or however many times it is. I have to say once again, Larry is a great drummer.

isn't that a good thing? i like when songs have tempo changes and do not follow verse-chorus-verse formula

  11. Rolling Stone is giving the album five stars...not surprised, since they give all the veterans high ratings.

while it's too early to really rank it, there are no bad songs on it, and there are some great ones. it's better than anything REM has done the past decade, or any other band that has been around for more than 20 years. and makes Coldplay sound tiny in comparison.

  12. Just finished my first listen. The album has some odd moments, but I enjoyed it. The track placement of Get on Your Boots is odd. I was hoping to love "White as Snow" but it didn't do much for me.

Standout tracks for me, other than Get on Your Boots: Breathe, No Line on the Horizon and Stand Up Comedy.

Solid album. Hints of "Pop" and "Achtung Baby" but certainly not a return to those albums.

Now I just need to decide if I'm willing to shell out the $70+ for the boxed set or go with the digi-pack......................

White As Snow really grew on me...now it's one of my favorites.

i also love Unknown Caller, the title track, and Moment of Surrender.

the only three i am not really crazy about are Crazy Tonight, Boots, and Stand Up - they seem like the obligatory pop songs to appease the record execs.
