    *Live Debut

Banter Corner: After Infinite Surprise, Jeff looked around the intimate venue and commented that it felt like he knew everyone there before looking up at the western second balcony and acknowledging out loud, "John", "Kathy" with a head nod and then turned back to the rest of the audience wryly admitting "Safe Bet" in reference to the more common names. Towards the end after Passenger Side, Jeff praised the intimate venue by proclaiming that he only wanted to play rooms this size and shape from now on and then wondered aloud jokingly, "Are there a lot of these?"

After Should've Been In Love, Jeff approvingly surveyed the crowd and included he felt like we were a select group there to see the B-sides and deep cuts before admitting he could be wrong and should perhaps just play some more common songs to satisfy a novice, which drew at least one applause causing Jeff to deadpan, "See."  Pittsburgh, like Via Chicago, was performed with a harmonica to flesh out the fuller sound usually provided by the other members of Wilco. After Pittsburgh, Jeff revisited the popularity of his songwriting catalogue by telling a story of how he had seen a Rod Stewart poster in Las Vegas for a show billed as "The Hits" and joked that someday he would have a poster for a show billed as "The Hit" before adding that it would be a really short show at the MGM Grand and could be performed in the lobby or a person could catch the short show just walking through the lobby. Just a song later after Jesus, Etc., Jeff noticed someone standing up and moving, which caused him to call out the person stating, "See, people are leaving now. I played the hit." before mimicking a man with a deeper voice speaking to his partner, "Let's save a little money on the babysitter and get out of here." Finally, Via Chicago received a larger response than Jeff expected, so he queried the audience, "Do you want this to be over? Maybe if we give him a big round of applause he'll stop." He concluded by stating with rising intonation, "Thank you?" and apologized for being suspicious of the audience's intentions.

After I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Jeff informed the audience that he shouldn't have eaten so many nuts before the show tonight because he was like a wood chipper, spitting out nuts everywhere. Following I Am My Mother, Jeff pulled up his pants, which received applause causing him to quip, "That's how you know you made it." The theme would be revisited several times throughout the night, each successive pulling up of the pants receiving larger applause and eventually cheers. At one point, Jeff turned his behind to the eastern and western balconies to ensure everyone could see, at least once, that he was, in fact, pulling up his pants.

Jeff briefly struggled with the instrumental section of the Evicted chorus the first time remarking during the song that he ran out of fretboard but would get it next time, which he did with extra gusto. The minor flub prompted him to explain after the song how all three members of Wilco who perform that section live (four including keyboards) play those notes differently on their instruments before humorously imitating how Nels chooses to play that section by contorting his left hand into the widest and most technically difficult/proficient position. Jeff also began Dawned On Me by singing the second verse first, so he quickly restarted it and commented that the second verse makes more sense after you hear the first.

Tonight's show included two trivia questions with the winner awarded a song request. The first question came after Via Chicago, perhaps because Jeff had been using his harmonica on the song. "Who invented the harmonica holder?" The first two guesses were Bob Dylan and Neil Young with Jeff telling the audience that both guesses were incorrect, which elicited quite a number of famous musician names before the correct answer was shouted, "Les Paul." Jeff added that Les Paul was not only in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but also in the Inventors Hall of Fame before granting the man's request for Dawned On Me. The 'Guaranteed Rap' preceded the song as it often does, as did the 'Encore Rap' without Jeff leaving the stage. However, he admitted that the rapturous standing ovation left him feeling unprepared and elected to ask a second trivia question. He introduced the second question by stating that it was about a famous rock star whose father was in the military, then acknowledging that all famous rock stars have fathers in the military and their fame is directly proportional to the rank their father attained with the most famous musicians having high-ranking military fathers. He then asked the audience whose father was not necessarily directly involved in the Gulf of Tonkin incident, but was nearby or indirectly participated in the event. Almost immediately, a woman provided the correct answer, "Jim Morrison." Jeff continued by seeing if anyone knew the name of Jim's father only to be met with "Mr. Morrison" answers causing him to dryly inform the crowd that he would have accepted "Admiral Morrison" before finally telling us Admiral Morrison's first name was Steve. The woman who provided the correct answer then interjected that Jim Morrison was actually her second cousin and had a brief back-and-forth conversation with Jeff before he said they would have to finish their conversation later and expressed his sincere wish that Jim Morrison were with us today. He warned the woman not to request a Doors' song before she sheepishly admitted that she didn't know the name of the song with lyrics about a washing machine and mowing the lawn.

Finally, Jeff introduced I'm The Man Who Loves You by explaining that he always performs and dedicates it to his wife when she is present but because she wasn't able to come to the show tonight, we were responsible for telling her that he dedicated it to her the next time we see her. He concluded by mentioning that she had told him one time he didn't need to dedicate it to her every time, so he didn't at the next performance. On the car ride home, he was quickly met with the sarcastic comment, "Nice dedication."

After Remember The Mountain Bed, Jeff confirmed that not too many people had attended the previous night causing a woman to shout out that it was difficult to get tickets for these shows. In response, Jeff quipped, "Good, it makes these shows more special" and "Means I'm popular" before concluding, "I couldn't get tickets either", which drew laughter. He revisited the topic of not many repeat attendees after Don't Forget by querying the crowd, "How many of you were here last night?", which drew a light smattering of applause, so Jeff estimated "10" people had responded and added that he had prepared an entirely different setlist than the previous night but wasn't sure that he wanted to perform all different songs for just ten people. He finished by stating that he would take the temperature of the room later to see if the audience was missing the hits before confessing, "I don't have any." He explained that this was a statistical fact based on the website requests for songs because at least one or two people request each song for every show.

Generally, the audience was a bit more reserved or better behaved (depending on your viewpoint) than the previous night. There were three guitars on stage (one without pick guards used for most songs, one with one pick guard, and one with two pick guards that was not used), so when Jeff announced that he was switching guitars (to one pick guard) for In A Future Age, the only response was one woman quietly commenting, "Wow." Jeff repeated the simple "Wow", which drew large applause and several more enthusiastic "Wow" in response. He liked how the new guitar sounded so stuck with it for Kamera before returning to the other one used throughout the show except when he was brought a fourth guitar from offstage for Laminated Cat. When he started Forget The Flowers, a few patrons politely clapped causing Jeff to remark, "Smattering" which drew a larger response but he informed us that he was just identifying and not asking for more.

After Kamera, he repeated the question of How many people were from Stoughton? from the night before and found a similar response, but a woman encouraged Jeff to ask, "How many of you are from Wisconsin?", which received much larger applause. He continued on about the audience from last night recapping the activity question and ice fishing response before realizing he had been describing the previous night's crowd perhaps a bit too much by sarcastically admitting, "Audiences love when you relive the show from the night before!" Before launching into Family Ghost, he informed the audience of the "Showbiz trick" to tell the second night's audience that last night's crowd were assholes. Jeff returned to the theme of a very respectful audience throughout the show later stating that he didn't deserve such a respectful crowd before providing further commentary on how the audience had been so full of themselves the night before because they knew they would get all the songs he wanted to play first and the second night would get the "dregs" of whatever songs were left on the list.

Upon finishing Impossible Germany, Jeff remarked that the audience probably wanted him to perform the solo and that he could, but the way he just performed it was how the song was written and that he wanted to stay true to the original vision before confessing that he was just kidding and he would love for Nels to be there because he performs the solo differently every time. Then, a man in the audience shouted out a request for Love Is The King but it sounded weird eliciting a "I think you put the emphaSIS on the wrong syLLAble" from Jeff. It was hilarious and I was amazed at the speed with which Jeff responded with perfectly executed incorrect pronunciation and stress. He declined to play Love Is The King because that had another "long solo."

The 'Guaranteed Rap' (à la Neil Young) preceded the song as it often has before and after Guaranteed, Jeff wondered aloud if he should continue to play only songs written about his wife before starting Reservations, and then stated that the next song was written for his wife as well (perhaps jokingly) before launching Pecan Pie, which gave me a whole new perspective on that song. Before the encore, a man requested Screen Door but Jeff somewhat quickly and abruptly declined explaining that the song was difficult for him to play. He continued that more importantly than the man's request was he hoped the audience knew he was just messing with us and that he was awkward as evidenced by not knowing what to do with his hands, so he just keeps tuning his guitar. I've often seen Jeff be brutally honest on stage, but I don't know that I've ever seen him as vulnerable and genuine when he was describing his feeling on stage this night. For a brief moment, it seemed like he had stopped being the consummate showman we have all come to know and love, and was rewarding this well-behaved audience with the raw Jeff Tweedy, warts and all. Perhaps talking about the stories throughout his life that informed his most recent book over the last week contributed to his candor on this evening. The moment was special and I doubt there was anyone in that opera house that wasn't incredibly grateful.

The 'Encore Rap' made an appearance again as well and included a bit where Jeff incredulously wondered if the audience was clapping so much "because I'm gone?!?", so he never left the stage in between Forget The Flowers and Laminated Cat. The crowd came alive after each song in the encore causing Jeff to comment that this should be the practice after every song throughout the whole set and nobody should assume an artist is going to play more than one song. The crowd even added in some of the whistling for Heavy Metal Drummer! Finally, it was the sound man's birthday so the audience sans Jeff sang Happy Birthday to him before A Shot In The Arm, which prompted Jeff to discuss how he dislikes singing the song because his extended family would always ask him to sing at gatherings once his professional career began to develop ultimately leading to their surprise that he was able to earn a living as a musician.

  3. California Stars was a request with Jeff explaining that people don't usually like that song. During the song, he asked if the audience wanted to sing along but be careful not to take his part. Before the second verse, Jeff cautioned the audience that it was a little more tricky than the first and either at that point or after the two verses the audience contributed to, also pointed out that some of us had sung his part.

Towards the end, a woman requested a song which I couldn't make out, but Jeff replied that he had prepared 800 songs which he could perform over the two nights and thanked her for requesting one of the few he hadn't prepared. She retorted that he could learn it for tomorrow and replied in the affirmative when asked if she would be returning for the second night causing Jeff to exclaim to the entire audience in a slightly exasperated tone, "Great, you just want me to practice all day tomorrow."

Thank you KevinG for recording the setlist! The theatre was indeed very intimate, so I didn't want to have my screen glow disrupting others trying to take notes in between songs as Jeff kept things moving at a nice pace even with the banter. I tried to capture the essence of the evening with the notes above. I'll bring pen and paper tonight to more accurately record the banter.

  4. Possibly during the book portion described above or after it around the halfway point of the show, Jeff mentioned that he had been answering questions all week on the tour so he was used to talking a lot more than usual and wanted to ask the audience questions which persisted throughout the night. One of the questions asked was "What is there to do in Stoughton?", which drew the response, "Ice fishing." Jeff commented that was one way to cure boredom(!), sitting on ice waiting for fish, so you're cold and bored before adding that maybe someone might want to take him ice fishing with them. Several people cheered before a woman replied that there wasn't any ice causing Jeff to respond in a politely sarcastic tone, "I didn't mean now!"

At another point, a woman said she likes to go dancing in Stoughton with Jeff inquiring "What kind of dancing?" The lady replied "Rock 'n' Roll dancing." with Jeff responding that he didn't know if he believed the lady because that kind of dancing is "dangerous".

  5. Sometime during the first half of the show, he asked "Who only knows Wilco songs?" and a few people clapped/cheered causing Jeff to comment on the sheepish reaction to the question. He then proceeded to ask who had his solo albums and during the banter in which Jeff explained there would be more solo material tonight because he doesn't get to play it as often, someone shouted out he should write a book. Not one to pass up the softball, Jeff replied, "Funny you should say that!" and recounted how he had been on a book tour for the last week and it was available to purchase in the lobby. During this portion, he mentioned that he had been signing hundreds of books each day over the past week, so if anyone finds an unsigned copy, to hang onto it because it will be a collector's item. Finally, he went on to ask how many people read one of his books, which drew large applause, then asked how many read two of his books, which drew slightly less applause, with Jeff finally asking who has read all three of his books, which drew even less applause causing him to remark something like an incredulous "Why not (more)?" before admitting the third book had just come out that week implying people may not have had time to finish the third one yet.

  6. I think Hummingbird was the first song with whistling and received the biggest reaction from the crowd upon completion, which caused Jeff to comment on how this is a crowd that loves whistling and maybe he should just whistle all the songs for the rest of the night which drew laughter and more cheers. Then after he whistled in Dawned On Me, someone requested a song without whistling, which he politely pointed out did not fit the theme, and then the request for The Ruling Class was shouted from the balcony. Jeff acknowledged that song had a fair amount of whistling before practicing the lengthy whistling part and quickly stating that he wasn't going to do that song before telling the story of how The Ruling Class had been submitted to Mike Judge for The King of the Hill Theme Song. He played The Ruling Class whistling part and then ended by sing saying, "The King of the Hill". He commented on how the song was not accepted before playing a short bit of his interpretation (strumming fast) of the actual King of the Hill Theme Song. Eventually, he practiced the whistling again and launched into the full song. He may have commented before the final whistling section that the crowd had had enough whistling for now (or that may have been later), but it did not seem he had originally planned to perform The Ruling Class.

  7. At or towards the beginning, Jeff confirmed he knew how to pronounce the name of the town/venue he was performing in: Stough (as in Standing O) ton. Standing O hint added by me, not Jeff. He just pronounced it correctly. Took me several times to get it right.

Early on in the set about 5 songs in ish, Jeff commenting on the new cushions for the seats asked the crowd how our butts were doing which caused someone to ask him about his behind and after explaining that he wasn't sitting down so his tuchus would not be as comfortable as ours, remarked that he did have a fine ass and we should check out the glowing Yelp reviews for his ass...all written by him.

Even though he never left the stage for the encore after explaining he had realized several years ago he should be on stage to soak up the majority of the applause and affection, Passenger Side began the encore.

  10. Assuming this takes place at night, I don’t see anything scheduled at Soldier Field, Auditorium, Salt Shed, Radius, Pritzker, Riv, Vic, Civic Opera House or Symphony. The Opera House is roughly located where the ad picture was taken. Metro, Thalia, Lincoln Hall, Schubas, and possibly Aragon have events scheduled at night. I haven’t checked smaller venues but hopefully it’ll be somewhere 1000+.

  11. ISO (in order of preference):

  13. Sima adding guitar at the end of World Away really shined.  It's hard not to focus solely on James interacting with Sima and Macie throughout the show. As Jeff was talking about James' guitar, a bird must have flown close to Jeff causing him to remark incredulously that the size of the bird meant it must have been a hawk which almost attacked him and he was lucky to be alive. I feel very fortunate to have experienced these Tweedy live events over the last year and would probably pursue multiple shows if this lineup were to tour in the future, similar to my Wilco obsession.

I did some detective work to see which new show was released to Nugs today and it looks like they dropped the 2 shows from Montclair, NJ in April 2010. I haven’t seen any official announcement today on social media, but I don’t recall seeing either of these before.

Show notes state those were released in March 2020
