  1. Pretty cool -- the entire set was professionally recorded. Not all of it has been posted, but a handful of songs... Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_1190590363&feature=iv&src_vid=xpZrRDjExo0&v=_H2o217hqJU

I've been loving these videos!  Really professional video and good sound.  Sounds like they will post the whole performance minus covers next week, so looking forward to seeing that.  I'm so enamored with their new album.

Haven't heard her (Rhainnon's) new album but I like the Chocolate Drops a bunch...

The solo album is a little uneven material-wise from my view, but yeah, I like that "Leaving Eden" CCDs album a lot.  Boy, her voice is just a wonder though.  She played a lot of banjo last night and fiddle on just a couple of songs. That voice is absolutely the star, though.

i haven't seen Jay play in a while... gotta fix that.

I've officially achieved the apex of my guitar-playing career tomorrow, as I will be sharing the stage with Jay Farrar and Rhett Miller.  And by "sharing" I mean I'll be on the same stage about 8 hours earlier for my Old Town School "showcase" (aka a beginners' group recital for grown-ups). I hope they've already started removing the brown M&Ms.

  2. Most of this is reasonable, I read it before posting. Reasonable, understandable and still a weak way to take a stand against a bad law. So many alternatives that may not get as much PR but are win-win.  Frankly Wilco's boycott is insignificant in the big picture. It is really a lost opportunity for them to take a higher road, a truly inclusive road.

Curious.  What is this higher, inclusive road that you envision?

  3. I've gotta say that I understand the disappointment and I understand those who feel that they may have been able to make a statement in a more effective way.  Hey, I am a grown woman who cried when Tweedy was rained out at Taste of Chicago last July.  But I don't get how these actions could possibly be characterized as selfish or cowardly though.  The band lost a bunch of revenue and made lots of people angry to take an unpopular-with-many stance on an issue that was important to them.  What's selfish or cowardly about that?

I also don't see how holding an already-scheduled concert and then talking from the stage about how they disagree with the law to a bunch of people who probably agree with them does any good.  The only thing that has caused any movement among politicians in Indiana is the threat of losing money.  And absolutely Wilco is not making anybody in IN rich by holding a concert there, but it's the only leverage they have.

  4. I'm having so much fun reading the FB comments.

"I guess Wilco forgets what took place with the Dixie Chicks. Wilco can say goodbye to their music career as they are done now."

    Goodbye, Wilco :ohwell

Omg, I know.  I've been reading these comments for entertainment all evening.  It's amazing how many people will make a facebook comment saying "Who?" instead of googling  http://lmgtfy.com/?q=wilco.

Also, the repetitiveness!  3 gazillion people post "lots of other states have a version of this law!" and another 3 gazillion people post "yeah, but there are some major differences that matter and here's a link."  Apparently nobody reads the link.  I also love that Wilco is listed as a "trending topic" on facebook.  When have you seen that before?

  5. Just saw this and I have tremendous respect for this decision.  I know some of the affected fans are mad and disappointed.  I would be too, especially if I voted against putting these idiots in office.  However, how really can anyone outside of Indiana's voting system make their voices heard?  Money is the only answer (public shaming doesn't seem to have had any effect at all).  The state losing business for conventions, travel, business ventures, and even rock concerts should eventually do the trick.

  6. — Jeff's sister — or as Spencer would say, "Aunt Debbie" — was in the audience and influenced some of what Jeff decided to play during the solo set. He mentioned, for instance, that I'm A Wheel was one of her favorites. (Incidentally I hadn't realized just how many of Jeff's songs mention his sister, or a sister, but there's more than a few.)

Just wanted to add that I've seen a few shows up in Vermont (my Vermont-resident sister and brother-in-law are my Wilco co-dependents) and often Jeff's sister attends.  He's said on more than one occasion from the stage that she's his hero.

  7. That is a lot to absorb in one awful week.  I wish there were something to say that would be of help.  I used to wonder how people got through the awful things that happen in life, and then as I went through a few myself, it became clear that it's because you don't have a choice.  No way out but through.  Sending good vibes and best wishes to you and your family.

  8. She is indeed.  Care to share any other discoveries?  I'm enjoying Parquet Courts but finding it hard to get excited by Mac Demarco.

Saw Mac DeMarco at the Hideout Block party last summer and was bored silly.  He seems to have a lot of fans though, so maybe someone can speak to what I am missing there.
