  1. Terrorists looking to maximize body counts will always be able to find a soft target. The list is long: churches, schools, airports (pre-security checkpoint), public transit, etc. Metal detectors wouldn't stop an attack like we saw in Paris; the only thing that would be of any use would be large numbers of heavily armed police officers and that's too expensive for most venues.

And now is a good time to remember that Edward Snowden's disclosures have made it much more difficult for intelligence agencies to prevent coordinated attacks.

Regarding what you said about Snowden, it's just not true:

  2. See post above you - it's Jonathan Parker.

He uses to sing lead a bit too - Immigration Song, etc.

Does anyone have video of Wilco performing Immigrant Song with JP in a dinosaur outfit?  I know they did it in SF at the Fillmore...

If I could stand the cold, I'd move to Europe and get into a socialized medicine system. The way we get screwed here is absolutely criminal. Watch Sicko, and you will see just how bad it really is. But we keep putting up with it, because unfettered capitalism is our god here in the good ol' USA.

So would I.  Seriously.  Our f-ed up medical system, education system, banking system, government... it's all a part of the same problem: our goddamn government is run by a bunch of rich fuckers.  The incentives are so fucked up right now.

This whole government shutdown has really pushed me over the edge: I just cannot and will not tolerate a goddamn Republican in my presence.  They're all bad right now but the Repubs are just absolutely monstrous.  Time to tax the rich at 91%.

    Or move to Norway.

That is how doctors were when I was a child, and for all of history...before the AMA. They made house calls. They spent real time talking with their patients. They cared for you as a person. That's what the fucking job is supposed to be. That kind of doctor still exists today, but they are a very small minority. Oh, and today, they call that "concierge care." What used to be normal care.

And when I was a child, all the men looked like Ward Cleaver and smoked pipes, and their wives looked just like June.  You could drop in anytime to see the town lawyer and he'd spin you a good yarn for hours and afterwards go down to the Five and Dime for a soda.  A ham sandwich was only 5 cents then and everybody respected their mothers.  Everybody had a heart of gold and would ride on flying horses that would arc across the sky as the clouds would part and rainbows appear bringing smiles to all the town's children.  Gosh things were good then!

  5. I'm a big Josh Ritter fan, and Josh Ritter has always billed himself solo or as "Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band" or variations of that.  He's had a number of people in his backing bands, and he's had a consistent line-up for a while. He LOVES the guys in his band right now, and you can see that they get a fair amount of independence.  If Josh decides to change musical directions, then Josh might ditch his bandmates if they can't make that shift in their playing styles.  There's nothing wrong with that.

Jeff is obviously the primary force of Wilco.  Without him, there's no Wilco.  For the most part, each album varies greatly from the last.  The fiddle/banjo guy left after Being There, because, wow Summerteeth has no room for that kind of sound.  Summerteeth is pretty well-liked around here, right?  It's fantastic, and there was no reason to keep fiddle/banjo guy if that's not what they were playing.

The shift in the percussion sound is sharp and immediately noticeable from Summerteeth to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.  I can't imagine the power pop drum sound of I'm Always in Love or ELT on Kamera or Heavy Metal Drummer.  And I don't think A Ghost is Born would have been as...however it is...if Jay was still in the band.  There's a sharp contrast between the Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot arrangements and the A Ghost is Born arrangements.

The sound didn't change because Jeff axed bandmates, Jeff axed bandmates to change the sound.  Yes it's the Jeff Tweedy Band, but that's a lame name, don't you think?

Tweedy is the decider -- I don't dispute it.  Reminds me of...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4F6aLCYjjo

  6. Hi Danny.  I'm Bob Roberts.  It's really great that you have a passion for the violin - after all, it's a noble instrument with a storied past and, at least in my opinion, a bright future.  Are you looking for the violin tablature (like guitar tab but for violin) for select Wilco carmina or are you more advanced and read the note thingies?

  7. I've always thought the pervasiveness of this malapropism is thanks to the fact that it has some linguistic logic.  By definition "intensive" means "to an intense degree", so an intensive purpose would be the concept in question being tested rigorously.  Like "When push comes to shove,"  or "practically".

What's strange is that I think the meaning I was going for was actually closer to "intents and purposes" than "intensive purposes."  But's it also possible I was meaning "practically" as well -- but would you say that "intents and purposes" is close to "practically" in meaning?

  8. one thing that's kinda tiresome (to me) about the Bennett/Coomer argument is the assumption that if those guys had stayed in the band it would have cranked out another half dozen opera of equal (or better) quality to Being There or Summerteeth.

    because, see, you never know.

Where's that Dick Ctionary guy when you need him?

I don't know I think Wilco with that lineup could have made a lot more real good operas.  Stiratt has that nice high tenor which could have been employed in some ass-kicking arias -- put him into a blond Brunhilde style wig and you're off and running.  Tweedy could have been the baritone hero, and Bennett with his low bass could have been the evil Svengali like genius trying to steal Brunhilde from Tweedy.  Coomer, Bach, Johnston, and Egan as a sort of Chorus commenting on the action?

  9. If only Jeff had taken the Miles Davis approach.  "You're ready to lead your own band, so I'm not firing you, but you're out."

Just continuing in this vein... who do you think should be fired right now?

I think Tweedy should have Tony fire the Pat Metheny guy, the guy with the bouffant hairdo, and Kotche.  Maybe he could be like the AOL CEO and do it on a conference call to thousands of fans and reporters.

  10. I think his moment of doing"something boss like and mature" really crippled Wilco. I think Jeff is super talented don't get me wrong , but when Jay left I think he took a great big chunk of the talent and creativity with him.

I tend to agree with this and would include Coomer in on that.  After the firings of Coomer and especially Bennett it became increasingly hard to listen to Wilco.  With the anchor of Coomer gone Wilco was free to fly into the hard rock stratosphere but they lost the down to earth sensitivity to rock n' roll and country style that Coomer had.  Obviously Bennett was the master of the counter melody, the substitution chord change, and power pop twang heaven.  Both of them put a lot of their soul into Wilco and it was hard to stomach watching them get fired just as the band was on the precipice of greater success - that is, just as their hard work and sacrifice was to be rewarded with a little better pay and recognition.  After that, it was basically "The Jeff Tweedy Band" for all intensive purposes but it really wasn't up to that point: that's why Tweedy axed them.

But again this is old stuff -- where's the Tweedy sex tape is what I want to know!

  11. Ah what the hell!  I was just kidding -- I do think it's a sign of maturity to fire your friends if you're the boss.  Who gives a crap anyway.  This message board was just getting so dull for me as a "lurker" that I thought I'd bring back the whole bennett/coomer thing -- but it just doesn't have the same juice anymore.  The arguments have all been argued (although I do think that replacing Coomer with Kotche is like the Stones replacing Charlie Watts with Neal Peart, and replacing Bennett with Cline is like The Flying Burrito Bros replacing Sneaky Pete with Pat Metheny - but I digress...)

As I was saying the arguments have all run their course and are just stale and old now (like me come to think of it).  Tweedy needs to inject some controversy into the proceedings -- you know, release a sex tape or maybe fire Pat Sansone simply to create an existential crisis for John Stirratt.  Or he could bludgeon a prostitute with his guitar while on a sexual tourism trip to Bangkok and then flee the country for his compound in Uruguay where he can proceed to release cryptic songs produced on his 4 track onto youtube while high on bath salts.  Maybe he could join the Westboro Baptist Church for awhile or he could start stalking Taylor Swift.  I think any and/or all of those things would revitalize this message board and allow me to lurk in peace once again.
