  1. Given the amount of times I've participated in this thread, I'm obviously a big Jay fan.  I'm really digging this after having a full week or so to listen.  I'd put Lost Souls, Cherokee St, Sinking Down and Promise the World up there with anything he's done previously.

This is a huge step following Honky Tonk.  When they released the title of this album months ago, I was worried this record would be a Jay Farrar plays the blues thing like Honky Tonk was for classic country.  Outside of Shine Down and Angel of the Blues, that record is very easy for me to forget.  On Honky Tonk the instrumentation is Bakersfield, but the song writing doesn't match the mood.  Nobody in a real Honky Tonk would ever dance to those songs. On Notes of Blue, he's playing with blues tuning and themes, but it still has Jay's fingerprints all over it.

I'm also liking the promotion they're getting this time around.  Somebody has convinced Jay that he needs a Facebook/Twitter presence to get the word out, and I sense a lot more buzz around this release.  I don't see a live Q&A with his fans anytime soon, but I like the updates/retweets.

  2. A turntable with built in speakers is going to have poor sound quality and will quickly wear your records out because of a low quality stylus. Records are expensive these days, so unless you're only going to be listening to beat up old records, I would steer clear of all-in-one record players.

If you already have a stereo system, you might consider getting a bluetooth turntable, which will allow you to listen through your existing speakers.

Thanks jff. I have a nice blue tooth Bose system.  I can get a turntable to synch with it?  Sorry, I'm not very audio inclined...

  3. Hi All,

I'm thinking of making a return to listening to vinyl (of course I sold all my records about 10 years ago).  Not looking at getting an expensive set up.  Anybody have any recommendations on turntables with built in speakers?

  4. I'm rather enjoying the new record.  I don't want to sound like a fan who's asking an artist to try to recreate their former self, but Ryan is never going to recapture the muse he had during the Heartbreaker/Gold/Demolition/Cold Roses era that I will always hold dear.  Prisoner is a good listen though.

  5. To be fair to Jay - he was asked a question and he answered it. I am guessing he didn't ask to be asked.

I think Jeff could use a kick from Jay, for old time sake, and vice versa.

I agree.  I had a friend who interviewed Jay (I think during The Search or ACD), and Jay didn't want to discuss Jeff or UT.  I think all reporters want to take him in that direction.  I don't think he's intentionally going to the Jeff/UT well. If Jay was looking to drum up reunion talk to sell merchandise, Jeff would probably have gotten name recognition in Jay's book.

  6. I for one am THRILLED with the current Jayhawks lineup and latest album. Excited to hear what's next for them. That reunion album was nothing special imo.

So am I...I meant that if a UT reunion went the same way as a the Olson/Jayhawks reunion, I'd rather just remember the past with UT.

    Where is this interview from?

Wonder if Jay would ever play Solid Sound. That would be the place to do it. Probably need some neutral turf though.

    No Depression

  7. This could start a chain reaction. Marc Olson could rejoin The Jayhawks, Ryan could get Caitlin and Skillet back, and I could be in my 30s again.

If it's going to go anything like that Olson/Jayhawks reunion went, I'd prefer to just remember the olden days...

  8. Promise the World and Back Against the Wall have that original lineup sound.

Jay has often struggled with wordiness/awkward phrasing.  I like how he simplified the lyrical approach to match the more authentically blues tunes.  On first full listen, it has a number of keepers.  Really liking Lost Souls, Sinking Down and Cherokee St.

I'm a big Son Volt/Jay fan, so I'm naturally biased.  I'll be interested to read what others think...

  9. I've seen six of the Best Picture nominees, which is a record for me. I like all the ones I've seen, except for Arrival, which I didn't like at all. My vote goes to Lion. (The ones I have not seen are Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester By the Sea, and Moonlight.)

See Manchester.  Sad and long, but a great film.

  10. Urge Overkill

    The Candidate

    Goodbye to Guyville

    Now That's The Barclords

    Sister Havana

    Emmaline

Now, here's a band I haven't thought about in a while (I apologize if I get these titles wrong):

    Positive Bleeding

    The Break

    Back on Me

    Nite and Gray

    The Candidate

Wow, they played some epic shows in Chicago in the early 90's and I always had to go it alone.  All my friends hated UO.
