  1. i went and here's some thoughts...

    - the venue was a renovated highschool auditorium that held 700 or so?

    - buck meek played about a half-hour.

    - tweedy played 1.5 hours - started 8:30, over at 10.

    - the sold-out crowd was very quiet and respectful. i mean, people waited until between songs to get up and go out / come back to their seats. did get a little loud when he took questions from the audience while he was tuning, but got quiet again when he started playing.

    - during that q&a part, wayne coyne asked a question about if he could make up a song on the spot like elton john, and tweedy said "like chopping broccoli? no."

    - can't remember the song, but when he did some loud guitar playing, the crowd got really loud with applause and he stopped and said "what was that about? all the acid kick in at once?"

    - speaking of that, he had some really funny banter throughout the night, so he seemed to be in a good mood.

    - he played 2 guitars throughout the night. one was a smaller one for the main set, then a larger one with some decoration on it for the encore.

  3. it was a few nights ago, but zz top! went in expecting the same standard setlist from them, but instead got 4 new songs, plus precious & grace, funky dogs/nasty kings, certified blues, and fool for your stockings. nice mix of old and new.

  4. Have fun at that. I have a friend who's been trying to convince me to go for a few days. Mostly cause he can't find any singles for a good price.

I will be seeing the Sword with Gypsyhawk and Eagle Claw tonight at the Middle East

make sure you get there early for eagle claw. not sure what the order is between them and gypsyhawk - they've been changing it up on this tour - but don't miss them! great instrumental hard rock from austin.

  6. news not so good for baroness:

The band members of Baroness and their crew are recovering from injuries sustained after their tour bus crashed outside of Bath, England early on Wednesday morning.

John Baizley has broken his left arm and left leg. Allen Blickle and Matt Maggioni each suffered fractured vertebrae. All three remain in the hospital as of this writing. Pete Adams has been treated and released from the hospital.

Three of the five crew members who were on the bus have also been treated and released. One member is still undergoing testing. The driver of the bus remains in critical condition.

Please stay tuned for further updates. Thank you for all the support during this extremely difficult time.

  7. i saw the beastie boys at the bottom of a bill in 1986 that was them, ll cool j, whodini, and run dmc. it was before licensed to ill came out and we hadn't heard of them. 3 guys came out on skateboards and rapped for 3 songs, and when they left the stage, we kinda laughed at them, thinking they wouldn't amount to much. oops. saw them later in 1994 and 2004 - they grew up nicely.

  9. totally worth it. last time i saw them was in 2009 and his band was great. and i can point to a son volt 2006 show at austin city limits festival where the hearing in my right ear got a little more damaged... standing in front of a speaker when jay started ripping on a solo :guitar and it felt like my ear exploded. got a little too close without having earplugs. ouch... lesson learned.

  10. met him last year and was one of my favorite athlete autographs i've ever gotten. he greeted me with a "hey blood!" and when i asked to shake his hand he gave me a strong soul brother handshake.

i think without frazier in his life, ali wouldn't have been who he was.

  11. I'm actually taking it a lot harder this morning than I was last night.

opposite of me. i took it really hard last night and could hardly sleep, but am getting more optimistic by the hour. i just can't go back and dissect the game over and over like i was last night... 7:05 can't get here quick enough!

  12. i don't like the idea of west virginia coming to the big 12, but i think that's mainly the old traditionalist in me who's been an oklahoma state fan since the mid-70s when it was the big 8. i like the idea of regional conferences where it makes geographic sense to be grouped up with other similar schools.

that said, i realize this is where the conferences seem to be going - no geographic or historic affiliation, but super conferences where it's all about the dollar.
