  1. IMO, the Ernie Ball is a much better built product than the Morley (and I also have owned several Morleys over the years).

Many pros mode their pedals (volume and wah) to limit their range. Having all that volume control is not as useful ad having more control (ie: greater resolution) of the range where you would actually use it.

There are tons of how-tos on modding pedals, use google.

You will find the vol pedal to be useful in modulating gain to a tube rig to get a little clean/dirty action (or dirty/filthy) from the same channel.

  2. MJHutch.... First I want to say that I am sorry you had to witness that... It was ugly for me to watch, and I am not a Michigan fan.

I went to the Northwestern - Nevada game, and I can say that neither team really looked good.

4 points down with only 1:12 left, many fans headed for the gates... My cousin and I started that way but decided to grab some open benches near the gate and watch the final minute... because we DID pay to go to the game today, even if it was half of face value.

The 'Cats finally pulled it out!! With a STELLAR 4Q drive .

Honestly, it was the strangest thing I have seen in many years of watching football. It was reminiscent of John Elway era Broncos game ending drives of the 80s.

THEN, the D game up with a big sack with under :10 left, and then Nevada called a timeout lwaving :04 oin the clock, and the 'Cats replied with ANOTHER sack for a safety!!

Trust me when I say that they did NOT look good until that drive (well, there was one 70+ yard breakaway run...)

If they ONLY watch the game film of that play, and the last 1:12, they will know exactly how to approach their future games.

  3. I still believe they're worthy of votes, though I'm not surprised (or upset) that they've dropped out of the top 25. If they look better this week they might even break back in.

I believe the sentiment of MJHutch may have been if Michigan are still receiving votes for #1 in the Nation, then those people should have their privileges revoked.

    I wholeheartedly agree....

I hate USC as much as anyone, but they are definitely worthy of #1 votes at this point....

    Go Badgers.

  4. Although in hindsight it might seem delusional on his part, when Crosby was getting arrested for firearms back in the '80's he always answered the question "why do you have a gun on you?" with the answer "John Lennon".

Yeah, the "everybody's out to get me" thing MAY have been a symptom of the massive cocaine use...

    Paranoia will destroy ya.

    Just sayin'.

As for Peart's traveling partner, I remember reading in Ghost Rider that this person was pinched on a sizeable marijuana charge and facing some serious time...

Either Canada doesn't have an equivelant to the US policy where "felons can't carry guns", he got the charge dropped/reduced, or he is just an outlaw type....

  5. Enjoy. :cheers Maybe I should travel and catch some low-hanging fruit, myself. The OSU Alumni Assn politely informed me recently that my ticket application for the Wisconsin game was denied due to overwhelming demand. Its not unusual to get bumped to a crappier game, but I think this is the first time I got shut out altogether for the season. Guess I don't donate enough $.

Any tix for ANY games at Camp Randall are a bloody fortune on Stub Hub or eBay right now... and I don't see that changing unless they drop a few games.

Here's to high ticket prices all year and a Big10 championship!!

Purdue is likely to be next on my journey, as their tix are still reasonable.

    Perhaps Iowa after that...

    Michigan State...

    Indiana...

Minnesota... (although I wish they played outdoors instead of in the TwinDome)

Penn State will be the longest drive, I think.

    Illini?? whatever...

  6. I am starting a quest to attend a game at every Big 10 stadium over the next few years.

Since the finances are not as robust this year, I am shooting for the low-hanging fruit.

    First game:

Northwestern vs. Nevada at Ryan Field

Not a conference game, but we will make that the rule for the second go 'round.

Why do I call this "low hanging fruit"???

The per ticket cost for row 26 on the visitor's sideline at @ 30 yd line, $12 on Stub Hub

    Wish me luck!

    Rick.

    (oh, GO BADGERS!!!)

  7. ^^ Well said A_Wheel.

I think saying the guy is a prick when you haven't even met him is a bit unjust. I know there have been a few times where I've based my opinion (negatively) about someone solely on the words they've posted on a site like this. I've often been proven wrong when I've actually met them in person. You just can't get the full picture in words alone sometimes.

Exactly, nobody writes about the 10,000 times you sign an album, shake a fan's hand, stop to talk shop with a kid in a music store for 30 minutes when you really only need to get a few packs of strings, another backup wireless TX, or some new drum heads, and there is a cab sitting outside with the meter running waiting to drive you back to the theater....

It's the ONE time you find someone waiting in the closet in your hotel after you are beat tired from a 2 hr set, FLIP OUT and grab the guy by the neck and throw him down the hotel stairway that gets all the press!!! :)

  8. OK, I think that the rock star bashing is cranked up a little high here....

Neil is one of the most respected drummers in RxR.... in a phenomenally successful geek-rock band who's catalog references such fare as sci-fi, and fantasy imagery... and who has written one of the Worlds best songs about weed....

These three things mean that the most devoted morons on the Planet Earth will be coming out of the woodwork to try to meet and chat with him.

I don't know if you can tell, but Neil is not your typical rock star.

Not all successful musicians are obnoxious frontmen looking for non-stop T&A and fake acceptance from everyone they meet, some are just normal human beings with a gift for writing and/or playing an instrument.

I grew up in Rockford, IL, and I happen to know where Rick Neilsen, Brad Carlson (aka Bun E. Carlos) live, and the home where Robin Zander formerly lived here in town.

What is crazy is seeing your RxR heroes' wife hanging his undershirts on a clothesline. If you had driven by the Carlson residence in the 80s (hell, possibly this past weekend) and you may very well have seen that.

As a fellow "normal" human being, I can identify with having a not-so-pleasant day and just wanting to be left the fuck alone....

If I were riding cross-country on a motorcycle, trying to determine a reason to NOT drive into a bridge abutment after my daughter AND wife were taken from me, then I may also decide to pretend that I am not who I really am and refuse a toast/autograph request/etc. while sitting in a hotel bar.

Yeah, it's a bummer for the fan who wanted to meet someone who's music he enjoys, but the larger picture allows Mr. Peart some slack in this case.

Success is a double-edged sword. Some people relish it (ie: EVERYONE in the 80s hair-metal scene), and some people regret it.

You may remember how the John Lennon story ended.... You have probably seen the Dimebag Darrel story... The Selena story.... The toll of the E. Coast/W. Coast feud in hip-hop.... and there are many more....

When fans go nuts, they go NUTS, and people die.

Some person went on the Rush tour bus uninvited?? And Neil is an asshole for forcing them out??

HELL YES I would have physically forced them out. That is a MASSIVE invasion of personal space.

When Jeff stiff-armed that person on stage, Walter Payton style.... same deal.

If I followed you through your front door and ran into your living room and frantically said that I LOVED your prolific posts on VC and wanted you to autograph my VC hat, and that I had to ask you some deep and probing questions about something you wrote 5 years ago, you would sic the family cat on me, hit me with a rolling pin, and call 9-1-1....

If an artist wants a little space, give them a little space without assuming that its just another rock star asshole who is too good to meet his fans.

    Relax,

    Rick.

  9. Mine came with little scratches across the grooves like it had been shuffled across a tile floor or something.

It is still unplayed to this day, although I just scored a Pro-Ject One (w. a Grado cart) at an estate sale... It may come out soon.

  10. Also check out

    Pete Yorn-Same Thing

Crazy enough, I was listening to this EXACT song when I saw this post....

Sad?? Jury's still out on that for me...

There is definitely some interesting production.

The cover of Warren Zevon's Splendid Isolation from that Yorn disc elicits a little more emotion from me, just because it reminds me that Warren is gone.

  11. Least favorite: Auditorium

Awww..... that's a cheap shot, even with the disclaimer!!

Best and Worst for Wilco/Tweedy shows:

    Best:

TIE: Auditorium Theater is the finest in the Midwest for acoustics, IMO...

TIE: Pabst in Milwaukee was another beautiful venue with spectacular sound (or perhaps it was Jeff being an overachiever)

    Worst:

Hands down... Davis Park, Rockford, IL... On The Waterfront Festival Grounds.

Also a not-so-good venue for sound where I have seen Wilco... Otto's in DeKalb.

Didn't matter, it was still an awesome show. Jeff's first out of treatment.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best/Worst of ALL TIME:

Best: Still going w. Auditorium and Pabst....

Also adding Coronado in Rockford, IL and First Ave in Minneapolis (for the vibe, if nothing else)

I saw Mike Watt in the 7th St. Entry side, and I have seen Catherine Wheel and others in the main room.

    Worst:

I am not going to pile on and say Rave/Eagles Ballroom... although that big room definitely has issues!!

I saw Bob Mould ROCK that room.... so therefore it has a little bit of a positive connotation in my mind.

I am going out on a limb and say the god damn World/Tweeter/Whatever-freaking-bank Ampitheater in Tinley.

I have seen many shows there over the years, and they all had horrible acoustics no matter WHERE you sit.

Straight ahead of the stage within the first 1/2 of the seats is the only place where you can even comprehend the sound w/out the bizarre reflections off that roof...

I remember one of the years that the Q101 Jamboree was there with Soul Asylum and Foo Fighters.

Soul Asylum sounded pretty good, but EVERY other band (including the Foos, who were headlining) sounded like ass.

I saw Soul Asylum a couple months later at Metro, and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen...

  12. I think the performer is Michael Martin Murphey and not America, unless they too recorded it. It was a huge hit for MMM in 1975.

    Well, I was 4 in 1975...

The credit to America came from one of the myriad lyric sites who appeared to have the lyrics of the song I remembered.

Either way, it still presses that little "sad memories" button in the back of my head.

Another couple tracks from my teen years are "With or Without You" from U2, and "Badge" from Cream (that's when I got into Cream).

Most of the songs on the past 12 pages have been lyrical content, with a few Radioheads and other thrown in to represent the music.

Musically, Kent and Sigur Ros are sad sounding CDs for me... I love them, but there is a fine line vetween relaxing music and depressing music that these pass over from time to time.

Early Catherine Wheel and My Bloody Valentine are also on that list for me.... (shoe gazer??, how about "don't get out of bed for a couple days"??)

  13. That song "wild fire" made me cry as a little kid...

I think its about a horse that dies...

EDIT: found the lyrics... It's a pony!! (sad)

The band is America, and likely the first time to be mentioned on this board.

Mind you, when I was a kid in the 70s, we only had AM radios in our family car, and this is the shit thney played on AM radio.

She comes down from Yellow Mountain

On a dark, flat land she rides

On a pony she named Wildfire

With a whirlwind by her side

    On a cold Nebraska night

Oh, they say she died one winter

When there came a killing frost

And the pony she named Wildfire

    Busted down its stall

In a blizard he was lost

    Chorus

    She ran calling Wildfire

    She ran calling Wildfire

    She ran calling Wildfire

By the dark of the moon - I planted

But there came an early snow

There's been a hoot-owl howling by my window now

For six nights in a row

She's coming for me I know

And on Wildfire we're both gonna go

    We'll be riding Wildfire

    We'll be riding Wildfire

    We'll be riding Wildfire

    On Wildfire we're gonna ride

    Gonna leave sodbustin' behind

Get these hard times right on out of our minds

    Riding Wildffire

  14. It's a good practive for songwriters and performers to publish ANY works that have been performed live or included in any studio sessions or even "scratch" sessions in public or time-share rehearsal facilities.

This keeps the possibility of plagiarism/song poaching to a minimum, and allows recourse when it happens.

I am sure there are songs that just didn't make the cut for any of the commercial releases, and perhaps aren't in favor anymore for consideration to be played live. They are still Jeff's songs, and are still protected as such.

From a personal side, I would love to hear more of Jeff's B-side tracks from different eras of the band, and with the track record of Jeff and Wilco, we will....

  15. Also, determine if the amp is self-biasing or if you need to get a meter and set bias manually.

Bias is the set amount of current flowing through a tube's filaments with or w/out signal present.

Bias set too high or too low will result in shortened tube life and/or shortened AMP life...

Also, never pull a tube while an amp is on or cooling down, and you shouldn't disconnect the speaker (or cabinet) while the amp is on.

Most will survive this because of built in protection, but the old rule was that an "open" circuit was death for a tube amp.

  16. Agreed - my apologies.

Thanks for reaching out via PM...

I respect that you did this.

My tale was not intended to spark controversy, just to relay a similar situation to the OP.

I hope that the OP decided to tell the truth. What that woman was trying to get away with is insurance fraud, and there are not a lot of gray areas there.

If the OP decided to go along with the story, and somehow the truth got out, I wouldn't be so sure that these people (meaning the individuals involved, not any class, race, or religion of people) wouldn't flip the story and say that the OP was involved in the scam if some over-eager investigator offered them a way out.

In the words of the Wu-Tang Clan...

    Protect ya neck, kid.

  17. Looks like an even cheaper rip off of Mad Dog 20/20.

    Pretty much a fair comparison...

MD is being phased down to 13% alcohol... Cisco remains at 18% along with Night Train and Thunderbird as the pre-eminent bum wines.

Cisco and MD have flavors which attract the younger crowds.

I am in NO way endorsing any of these... I actually found the photos as a goof for another conversation and thought that they would be funny.

When I drink, it's single malt, it's old, and it comes from Scotland or Ireland.

Clontarf Reserve was the last nip, and that was weeks ago.

Lately, it's been ice water (in prodigious amounts) or the occasional Coke Zero.

  18. My story showed that even though I chose to do the "right" thing and stand up for the truth, it didn't matter.

That was my case, but if I get a vote on the OPs moral question, I vote for telling the truth.

I would have a hard time lying under those circumstances for a good friend, much less a perfect stranger.

Unlike lies, integrity and honesty are traits that you cannot fabricate after the fact.
