Why is Obama doing his speech in a football stadium?
Because JFK did.

My reference to Russia/US confrontations is in regards to so many other unstated factors that have occurred over the years, the back story so to speak. Things such as the US pushing for NATO membership for so many former Soviet client states and former Soviet Union members. Yes we are pushing for Georgia to be in NATO, we are pushing for the Ukraine and Belarus etc
-
Do we have to make every dealing with Russia a confrontation?
Putin and Russia are the ones who are flexing their muscles. Last year they restarted their "we're going to fly our heavy bombers right up to your borders" flights, they've poisoned people in other countries and last week they were talking about basing their bombers in Cuba. The confrontations are not coming from the U.S., but rather a newly revived Russian bear coming out of hibernation after more than 15 years.

Um, it just dawned on me: This is the first time that I can think of where we have actual physical evidence of Nels singing!

I believe the implosion of missile silos was one of the terms with the end of the Cold War. Now, if you have your own missile silo you are in violation of this peace treaty.
The U.S. still has several hundred Minuteman missiles in silos. One warheadless missile is periodically removed and launched from Vandenberg AFB to verify that they'll work if/when needed.

Far too localized. Russia and Georgia will fight it out or work it out, and that'll be the end of it.
Unless the BTC pipeline comes into play.

My co-worker was in Fairbanks last week to visit our ground stations in nearby North Pole and Poker Flat and sent me these photos of The Blue Loon where Wilco will be playing next week. I was trying to convince the powers-that-be to send me up there on a "business trip" but then my girlfriend reminded me that we're going to be in New Orleans that weekend.

From Watt's lengthy tour diary
friday, may 30, 2008 - madrid, spain
ok... to the present: my sister brings me to the lax airport wednesday at six bells. actually, this is my third time overseas this year even if it's the first w/the stooges cuz in february I did the brother's sisters daughter "japan tiny tour" and then starting on the ninth of this month I spent a week in tokyo to do sixty pieces of music for the spielgusher proj w/mister shimmy and ms yuko plus also a couple of gigs there. man, are they some beautiful people - I'm gonna bring nels to tokyo in december to make an album w/them cuz mister shimmy loves nels and so maybe I can try a little to repay their incredible kindness... plus I love nels too and he's never played that land before so I can do a little on repaying him for the righteous work he did the first week of april when him and bob lee (much respect to him also) helped me make a new black gang album, "my shubun no hi" which I'll finish w/the singing this fall (it's about fall so I thought that as only fitting). man, that makes me think - I've be recording so much lately, as much as I can cuz I've concluded songs are truly my aka-chans in this world. ok ok - sorry again for slipping off into tangent-land, here goes about this madrid gig w/the stooges...

Interview: The late-blooming Nels Cline
By Matthew Odam | Friday, July 11, 2008, 10:42 PM
Although he has come to his greatest notoriety in recent years as the guitar player for Wilco, Nels Cline has been recording music for almost three decades and has been lauded by multiple magazines as

I'm a huge Nels fan and I'm pretty damn excited. It'll be my first Nels Cline Singers show.
The show last night in Austin was pretty damned spectacular. Well attended, energetic and enthusiastic. I'm happy to see this band getting out on the road.
Some videos have appeared on YouTube;
-
I'm in the process of sorting through 12(!) old hard drives in an effort to consolidate all my files on one or two terabyte drives.
I found another old (Jan/Feb of 2005) video on one of the drives. It's The Nels Cline Singers (mostly Nels and Scott, I had a tough time fitting Devin into the frame) performing "Square King" at Club Tropical in Culver City, CA.
-
they closed with a cover of Marianne Faithfull's Times Square that completely destroyed me. It's such a perfect song for Carla, and it was a fierce but beautiful performance.
I'm in the process of sorting through 12(!) old hard drives in an effort to consolidate all my files on one or two terabyte drives. This afternoon I came across this video of Scarnella performing "Times Square" in 2000. It was craptastically encoded in an 8-year-old Windows Media format and the re-encode for YouTube didn't help, but it's still a great performance. One of these days I'll sort through my hundreds of unlabeled DV tapes and maybe I'll get lucky and find the original and be able to upload a nicer file.

The greatest generation, indeed.

He told a great story of the making behind The Geraldine Fibber's music video "California Tuffy" that he was a part of when he was in the band back in 1997.

next best is Banyan w/ Perkins, Cline, Watt, and a hornblower.
Hornblower = Willie Waldman. And don't forget the best part of the whole thing: Norton Wisdom's painted interpretations of Banyan's music.

Watt has posted 2 videos from the recently completed recording sessions for The Black Gang's new album:

Is that David Gilmour with The Who?
Gilmour played on 2 songs at the big Prince's Trust performance of Quadrophenia in 1996. It was broadcast on TV, if I remember correctly. Roger's eye patch is courtesy of Gary Glitter's swinging microphone stand.

The Stones couldn't come close to matching The Who as a live act during this period. And it's even more lopsided when considering the individual members. Both bands had Keiths who were very entertaining, but I'll take Entwistle over Wyman any day. Townshend is/was more interesting than any of the Stones. Daltrey and Jagger both bore me a little, but Roger wins for the best hair.

SNL!
in Just A Fan
Today I tried capturing HD video from my DVR via firewire for the first time. It seems to have worked ok. Someone asked about the still photos of the band that aired between scenes, so I snapped the frames using VLC and uploaded them to Sendspace because they're too large (1920x1088 PNG files) to attach here.
-
I really appreciate you posting these vids Hixter, But i cant get any of my video softwares ( quicktime, wmp, real player, or DIVX ) to play these files, and usually they do fine with AVI's. I tried the software you suggested but I cannot access the site.
Here's a copy of VLC for Windows. It's hosted on my site, so I know the link works.

This is probably the only in-depth, man-on-the-street reporting I've seen from Georgia. Quite an interesting read, but maybe not so much if you're the type who wants your news boiled down into a few easy-to-digest paragraphs that either celebrate or castigate the U.S. and/or its administration. The world is a complicated place.
