  1. I think part of the point of this record was not to deconstruct everything in sight. YHF was fascinating for the way the songs were broken down and tweaked and twisted--it was refreshing and different, but it can get old just like anything else. After a while its gotta be refreshing to write a song and just let it be and not feel compelled to mess with it.

     

    This may be true, but in my opinion the songs suffer for it. In general there seems to be a pretty positive reaction for this album so I guess it works for most.

    Rise Up In The Dirty, Soft & Warm, and the title cut are my 3 favorite Voxtrot songs still to this date

     

    it's close though. like i'd give MSDW a 9, Wolves an 8.5, and this new one a 7-7.5

     

    i also think that the production & sound on Mothers is better than anything else they've done too (especially the full length). the sound on Wolves leaves a bit to be desired at times.

     

    Ramesh seems to have substituted guitar with all those strings on the s/t. I enjoy the new album, but where did those kick ass guitar fills from MSDW (title track) go? That is my absolute favorite Voxtrot song.

     

    NP: All Smiles - Ten Readings of a Warning

    Jim Fairchild, Grandaddy guitarist, solo album. The song "Moth in a Cloud of Smoke" is fantastic, but I'm disappointed to find it's the strongest cut on here.

  3. AGIB and YHF = not electronic "experimentation"

     

    Yes, one has a noise track (Sonic Youth is not electronic experimentation) and a Krautrock inspired song and the other has a few bleeps and bloops to close out some tracks but these are still rock/pop/alternative/whatever albums, not something entirely made on a Mac.

    I know he says "parts" of it get bogged down, but I read so many times that these albums were some great electronic experiment or something to the effect of that. And it really doesn't even apply to AGIB.

  4. I just don't like the melody. That piano riff and the guitar slides in the chorus just sound all wrong to me. I wish LNGCA or Let's Fight made the cut instead.

     

    I was one of the people hoping and praying that the studio would really alter and improve these songs for the better. I remember threads earlier with some people who were in the same camp, but we reasoned that the studio has usually made everything better. To me, one of the differences between this record and YHF is that (I'm speculating here) while the songs on YHF went through so many different versions and the band tinkered with different arrangements and sounds (which is why the demos remain such an engaging liste eventually yielding and awesome result, I just can't see the SBS songs being played any other way or undergoing the same process. I don't know if Jeff and co. didn't make the effort of deconstructing them or if the songwriting is just weaker this time out. Oh well, here's hoping I will enjoy the live versions of SBS material more.

    Ahhhh you cannot do that to a person. As soon as I saw the top of the album cover I was all over oink.

     

    Also, I'm telling ya, give Ted more listens, took more than usual for me on this one compared to his more immediate stuff on Tyranny, Hearts or Sheets.

  6. I totally agre. To my mind if you hold up 'muzzle of bees' and "side w/ seeds" the point is crystalized...

     

    "half of it's you half of it's me" has turned into "I'll side with you if you side with me". What was abstract is now physical. The contentedness that AGIB longed for has finally been realized in this record. Dissonance has given way to sweetness.

     

    Except Muzzle of Bees is a much better song.

     

     

    Well I think so anyway.

  7. the 1st concert I've ever walked out of was Death Cab For Cutie.

     

    Surprised at all the Death Cab walkin out. I love SAA and the Photoalbum, Plans and Transatlanticism are hit or miss. So I saw them at Bonnaroo not really expecting much, but they really knocked it out of the park. Eh, each his own.

    Yeah when they came to Boston ended with 20+ min version of Randy (as I guess they did with last song on that whole tour) that turned into random solos and noise, but was for me it was worth it to stick around and talk to Doug and get a pick.

    i loved the direction the band was taking with kicking television, and sky blue sky seems like a complete turn around

  9. I'd say Radiohead wins for most important/best band of this generation.

     

    Someone on another board made the album comparison between Radiohead and Wilco. I'm paraphrasing but:

     

    AM : Pablo Honey - Rough around the edges, big hit song (Creep/Casino Queen)

    Being There : The Bends - guitar albums, breaking into mainstream

    Summerteeth : OK Computer - ok this is a stretch, but still both bands got pretty big because of these records

    Yankee Hotel Foxtrot : Kid A - the masterpieces

    A Ghost is Born : Amnesiac

    Kicking Television : I Might Be Wrong - the live albums

    Sky Blue Sky : Hail to the Thief
